Howden signed to ELC

Quote:
The Florida Panthers signed one of their first rounders from this past draft, signing Quinton Howden to an Entry Level Contract.

Will they stick him in AHL for the remainder?

Finally, we got one! Hopefully this pushes us towards signing Guds a lot sooner...

Nice.

Could he play in the AHL even though he is under 20 and plays in the CHL?

He had a very good season this year. He deserves the contract and hopefully he can help the Panthers moving forward next year.

I'd like to give thanks to the organization for recognizing my skills and attributes, signing today is a dream come true.

- Howdy Howden !!!

i believe its more that he signed it this year rather than next year..
i know he can still be returned to juniors, but I cant remember the last time we signed a 1st round pick this soon after the draft..

This team's got a pattern of signing first round picks in the first year, you wanna really hammer on the point

I think Bjugstad is staying at U of Minn.

What if Gudbranson doesn't have a good training camp? Is Tallon going to waive him? hahahaha

I'd say somewhere between next year and the year after. So there's no rush. But from a fan's perspective, we just want them signed so we don't have to worry.

Is this, or is this not the Panthers organization? Stupider things have happened.

Actually with Bjugstad, because he's in college, we can wait until he's graduated technically I believe. But he can obviously leave college earlier and be signed beforehand.

if that's the case, we wont see him until 2014-2015

I see Bjugstad playing one more year in college then going to the pros (AHL).

Bjugstad can't sign until he leaves college. We have to sign Gudbranson by 6/1/12.

so tell me if im wrong here. if the player is in the ncaa (is that what its called for college hockey?) then we retain rights to sign them until they leave college. if they play in one of these other canadan leagues then we have two years. is that correct?

Yeah, pretty much. At least, if the player is playing in the CHL(OHL,WHL, or QMJHL) then they have to be signed within two years. Players like Zach Hyman play in Junior A leagues in Canada like the OJHL to maintain their NCAA eligibility. But if you have a prospect playing for two years or more in a Junior A league in Canada after being drafted then you probably don't want to sign them anyway. If the player is drafted out of Europe and then stays in Europe, we retain their rights until they are 27. Except in the case of Sweden and Finland, because the NHL has a transfer agreement with them. So I think prospects coming out of there have to be signed within 2 years.

For a 1st round pick in Howden's range, he'll probably get the 900K base and then minimal bonuses, like 200K.

AJ Jenks got a 3 year deal worth 875,000 a year (picked 100th overall by FLA 2008)

Robak got the same deal as AJ (picked 46th overall FLA 2008)

our highest non NHL player ELC:

Evan Oberg: 1.562 million a season (RFA 2012-2013) a bit high.
Markstrom: 1.3 million a season (RFA 2013-2014)
