This sucks. Goalie controversy in Philly game 81. What a surprise.

I wasn't able to watch the game tonight, but I did get a glimpse of an interview of Briere saying that they still "control their own destiny" for the 2nd seed. The standings show that Pitt is ahead of us, so how, exactly, is this true?

Yes, tiebreaker, assuming both Flyers and Pens win or lose in regulation, is wins not in a shootout. Since all the Pens 48 wins were in shootouts, we win the tiebreaker (well, not ALL their wins, it just seems like it.)

I would rather eat 30 pounds of old, hot garbage than watch Leighton attempt to be an NHL goalie.

Leighton may be a pile of puke, but the team plays differently for him. At this point, I'm up for trying anything.

If we own the tiebreaker, why are they currently ahead of us with the same amount of points?

According to NHL.com, the Flyers are #2 right now in the East.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/standings.htm...d=nav-stn-conf

Pittsburgh has more total wins and in the past that was the decisive tiebreaker.

Oh, alright. I trusted ESPN's standings enough to not double check NHL.com.

1.Wins: Most total wins among the tied teams, excluding games won in the shootout.

2.Head-to-Head Record: Most points in games against each other among the tied teams.

3.Goal Differential: Using the total goals scored during the regular season, the greater positive differential between goals for and against among the tied teams.

While 20 of the League's best players were in New York for a preseason promotional tour, the NHL's Board of Governors gathered at a nearby hotel to approve a new tiebreaker system for the standings. Starting with the 2010-11 season, the tiebreaker among teams with the same total of points in the standings will go to the club with the most regulation and overtime wins -- no longer including shootout wins in the decision.

"All of our research indicates overwhelmingly that the fans do like the shootouts," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "There has been an increase [in shootouts] in the last year, after consistent numbers in the four prior years, but one year does not an issue make."

Statistics prove out the Commissioner's point: From the 2005-06 season through 2008-09, games resulting in overtime ranged from 272 to 282 and shootouts ranged from 145 to 164. Last season, total overtime games totaled 301 and there were 184 shootouts.

I'd really like to know where this research was based. I bet if he polled non-Penguins fans, he'd get a lot different result.
