Pittsburgh Penguins vs Tampa Bay Lightning: First Round

Should be a really interesting series based on the games they've played this season.

This is your typical offense vs defense series. They have a fantastic offense. We are going to have to keep them off the powerplay and somehow get someone on St Louis.

Pressure, pressure, pressure. If we pressure their defense, we have a great chance at winning this series. If it's a special teams series, then TB should walk through in 6.

I'll break it down in depth by tomorrow evening.

It's crazy how the Penguins actually don't match up bad against this team without Sid/Geno. Last year there would be absolutely no chance. Cliche, but the Pens will have to stick to their forecheck/shut down game. Fleury will have to be at his best, and that goes without saying.

As it stands now I think its tampa in 6 or 7. Our d and fleury will steal a couple but our offense will let us down in the end w/o sid and an injured neal who already wasn't scoring

If we can stay of the PK and kill the penalties when they are taken we win. I think we are a better 5 on 5 team but we can't beat them at the special teams game.

Yeah, we really need to play disciplined hockey here. Our PK is great but give a team like the the Bolts too many chances a man up and they're gonna bury you. Stay out of the box and our chances of progressing are significantly improved in my opinion.

I don't think the Pens can go down in this series at all or else we could see a quick exit. We have to rely on chippy games w/ close scoring. We need something like 1-0 Pens, 1-1, 2-1 Pens, 2-2... then play best of 3.

And for this reason the three keys to this series for me are Staal, the top 4, and Fleury. If any of those three falter Tampa takes the series. If they are firing on all cylinders the Pens have a chance.

This. Id love to see Kunitz line him up. Although I'm not as worried about the Marty/Stamkos combo as we've shut them down ES as I am about Vinny being the X factor. He can make a statement he's back to the player he once was with a solid series.

I still expect the pens to win this series even without crosby. I think tampa's shown to be a good offensive regular season team, but their team is soft and their defense is suspect. I think their d-corps can be worn down over a 7 game series. Just need to stay out of the box and they should be okay.

IF we get our playplay going, and not take penalties.. we can easily win this series. Otherwise... long off season.

If MAF and the D plays the way they can, we will neutralized their big line and win this series. Their defense is awful, we should be able to score 3 goals a game.

Without Sid: Pens in 7.

With Sid coming back for game 3: Pens in 5.

With Sid coming back for game 4 or 5: Pens in 6.

We're just a better team top to bottom, we can take them.

As much as I wanted the Pens to take on the Bolts about a month ago, I kind of changed my mind. The Pens just can't be as simple offensively as they've been playing. That get puck to point... take shot... crowd net works right into the strengths of a big, stationary defense and a goalie that is over aggressive. I'm hoping to see the Pens go at that defense one on one and make plays off the rush. I know good old Pens hockey is about getting the puck to the end boards but defenses set up then. IMO the way to beat their defense is when they're in motion.

Of all the big names in this series I think for the Pens to win its going to have to be about ZiMa and Martin going against Stamkos and ST Louis. Their gap control, taking away of shooting lanes and play around MAF is going to have to be top notch. Also the Pens can not take dumb PIMs and let Steve Downie get in their heads.

I actually would match Letang against St. Louis. I like Michalek much better as a shut-down forward but I think you need someone who will match St. Louis speed and someone who can play him physically, which isn't Michaleks immediately strengths.

Though, when thinking about it, there isn't a matchup I don't feel comfortable with Michalek handling. I think Michalek is THAT good of a shutdown defenseman.

Given how many basketball games are blocking other cities from hosting Wednesday games, arena football is blocking us from hosting on Saturday, and Tampa is hosting a rodeo over the weekend...the league really doesn't have any other choice but that schedule.

Would be nice to able to watch teh games with high quality streaming for once instead of crap streams. Not having TV/versus sucks .

I really think this is going to be a good one in terms of the teams being pretty evenly matched. One word of caution: Tampa's so-called crap defense is actually very serviceable when you see who they have.

So was Philly's... but it's a team that we can run and hit until they start coughing up the puck. They don't have a Detroit like defense that can pass through our set up.
