Man that sucks. Shows how dangerous the enforcers' job is. Let's hope the guy can just lead a normal life now.

Dangerous, unnecessary & expensive distraction.

Good luck Boogie.

I'll never understand why some people act as if we shouldn't feel bad for injured players simply because they make money. They're still human beings, no?

Yea, it's just a coincidence he hasn't played or skated with the team in months, and that there is not one story of substance that has come out saying there is a timetable for return. He'll be in the lineup for game 1.

If this is true, I feel really bad for Boogard.

Best of luck, Boogs.

Please discuss the rumor, not the source.

Relative credence has been given in this thread. If you don't like it, please don't post.

What is it with the Rangers and fighters lately? We sign em for big bucks, and they are ineffective and get injured. A player of this nature can be easily drafted and cultivated in the minors. I dont understand throwing millions at this type of player, but thats me.

Yeah but Boogaard was the best an most intimidating!

In all seriousness though I hope the guy is okay as far as his mental state goes.

That's how I felt when I wound up at the Rangers/Lightning game in 2007 where both Hollweg and Orr scored

I'd imagine if he's retiring due to an on-ice injury/after effects then he'll still get a good portion of that contract.

I hope he retires ASAP fully paid by insurance & off our cap.

Thanks to the OP...

Had nothing against Boogs even though his contract was overpriced (I advocated resigning Shelly). Be that as it may, I could live with some degree of overpayment if the guy was doing his job.

While that happened to some degree, it was clearly not the best use of that many $$$.
In that regard, one can only hope Sather will check out the white album and remember: "with every mistake, we must surely be learning".

More importantly, while big Ranger bucks are nice compared to the alternative, turning any part of the body, especially the brain, into mush, is not a good thing.
We can only hope hard tough play in the NHL gets even cleaner and tragedies like this are minimized.

Yeah his contract is almost certainly insured. If he's forced to retire due to injury, he'll be able to collect on that policy.

Say what you will about Boogie and his contract, his goal against Washington was one of my favourite moments of the season. I'll always be grateful to him for that.

I hope he gets better soon, but even if he does recover, he'd be insane to keep on fighting after just one injury like this. His health is not worth it.

Terrible signing, terrible player, but terrible circumstances to end a career on. Hopefully he recovers, just not with NYR.

Agree with Fitzy about Neil.

Yeah, he is a helluva enforcer and I wouldn't mind having him around at like 500k, but the millions add up in a hurry.

I mean, with any player it's like "let's sign him if we can get him for 3m per, but 4,5 is too much." you'll save that 1.5m on Boogie...

This would certainly be beneficial to the Rangers cap wise. A big blow to those that like to have an enforcer on the team.

we'll probably just give out another 2 million bucks a year to another useless fighter.

they just are useless in this day and age.

Best of luck to Boogey on regaining good health. I never did like his contract given what he brought to the team, but this certainly isn't anything I would wish on anyone for any reason.

A few things: I've posted before that Boogaard is done; not because of any special knowledge but b/c of the length of the time he has already missed and the fact that his job consists of getting punched in the face. Even if he were to come back he most likely wouldn't last more than 10 games or 3 fights before the concussion symptoms came back. It is much easier to get another concussion after the first or second, at least in my personal experience.

Second, we haven't always struck out with enforcers, Orr enjoyed a damn good run in NY.

Third, Orr may be done, Boogaard is probably done and Shelley didn't exactly wow the fans in Philly. Strange year for the big time tough guys...

Thx for the update Dagoon. I thought Boogaard would have tried to made a comeback but when your done your done i guess.

In looking ahead I have to winder if they plan to add a little more toughness. Thinking McIlrath has some more cooking to do before making the jump.

Maybe Biznasty? Not a true heavy but one damn good scrapper and well liked by teammates wherever he plays.
