Canes Player of the Year

Wanted to get everyone's opinion on who they think is the Hurricanes' player of the year. Expecting mostly Staal and Ward....However, for me, I'm gonna go with a player that had a great year, scored clutch goals, aided in Skinner's development--especially early on (intangible), played a role as a #1 winger on a shallow offense and really played hard every shift.

Hurricanes Player of the Year: Erik Cole

(now go ahead and disagree, lol)

I would have to go with Skinner himself to be honest. I think his youthful enthusiasm is actually one of the things that got Erik Cole back into playing the style of game that he always had in him, but rarely let us see the past few years. That relationship was certainly symbiotic. Without Skinner's emergence, this year was virtually lost considering that we abandoned our rebuild essentially by only playing a couple of kids when we had somewhat planned to do more than that by virtue of how we started the year with Bowman and Dalpe both elevated.

Honorable mention as dark horse to Jay Harrison. I can't recall a single instance this year where there were consecutive posts in the GDT where somebody posted "Harrison ", or a similar sentiment. He was pretty steady all year in his role and played it to perfection. Few players went from as low of expectations to as high of expectations as he did. 10 points and a +5 rating on the year in 15+ minutes of ice time per game. Killing penalties as well. You can't debate that for league minimum.

I really don't see how there's any choice but Cole. Staal was bizarro Staal this year (in that he showed up in the first half, disappeared in the second), Ward wasn't exactly the model of consistency either.

None of the defense can be nominated, sans maybe Harrison, who really doesn't play a big enough role to worry about in the first place.

Maybe Ruutu? He had a really good run from November to January, IIRC. But still, I think Cole's the obvious choice.

I don't have anything to insightful to add, just concurring that the first two names that jumped right into my head were Cole and Skinner. Not much of a debate going on here lol.

Hard to argue that it's not Cole. Not only did have all the timely, clutch goals but he took a step back in time in terms of being a wicked, hitter and disruptive force on the forecheck.

His numbers aren't stellar but you have to put Ward in the debate too. He has had a paper thin margin of error all year with the guys playing in front of him. It's not only the number of shots but the quality of shots he's faced. The woeful faceoffs have tilted the time of possession the other way so many nights.

Stormy. Atleast he showed up with a ton of enthusiasm every night, unlike lot of guys on the ice...

Honestly, I'd go with Cam Ward. I think he's been the best player on our team for more nights than anyone else.

Skinner and Cole have surprised me in how well they've played (you could say they've overachieved given our expectations for them), but I don't think they've been our best players.

1) Cam
2) Cole
3) Skinner

aside from maybe Harrison (for the surprise performance factor) I can't think of anyone else that should even be up for discussion for this.

Really? You can't think of anyone else? Here, lemme help you out. If you're going to include the "surprise performance factor", you should also include the "best player" factor. Didn't live up to any expectations, but Staal still leads the team in goals, assists, and points... That's enough to get at least some consideration, if it really is for "best player of the year."

Cole gets the nod because of the significance of the goals he scored.

Oh, and because he's the only one who wasn't an All-Star...

Settle down, Francis...I'm sure he intended it as just his opinion, not a personal affront toward Staal. Or you...

When it comes to best player this year Ward wins that hands down. Staal, as much as I have avoided getting on the hate train when it comes to him, has not played up to expectations this season. Ward proved himself among the best goalies in the league this year and carried the team to even being in playoff contention, while Cole and Skinner both exceeded expectations.
