2010-2011 Positive Thread

The last few seasons I seem to have to make this thread just to keep the board somewhat balanced, but this season it really hasn't been necessary... because the team has been pretty darn good.

I see many positive things going on in Ranger land. The Positives far out weigh the negatives in my view.

1. The homegrowns have taken over this team. Finally. And they are a pretty good core.

Lundqvist, Callahan, Dubinsky, Staal, Anisimov, Girardi, Del Zotto, Stepan, Sauer

I'm pretty much digging all these players. They all appear to be NHL quality talent. MDZ still a bit rough around the edges but I see lots of upside to where his game can progress.

2. The UFA - Every year Slats seems to roll the dice on someone that doesnt work out. It's not a perfect science and of course he's looking for a deal, and those deals come from guys with question marks hanging over their heads.

Paid off with Prospal before his injury and I think its really paying off with Marty Biron. What a great pick up, and I tip my hat to Torts for getting the guy starts so Henke can be rested...

I've grown to like The Boog. Wish more guys would fight him, but he is solidifying his presence slowly but surely imo.

The young core guys are starting to stamp this team with an identity for the first time in years. Thats a huge positive.

It really is... almost hard to believe. Solid core.

And I really feel Prust and Boyle fit right in this group. I know they were acquired via trade but they do seem to be finding their NHL game as NY Rangers

The biggest positive is our record.
We have been without our top scorer from last season at 100% for a lot of the season, and our 2nd guy (prospal) for the whole season.
We have been without our captain, and even missed Rozy for a few games.
We still have 33 points.

I love this thread by the way.

We havent had any calls for Tanking yet, and we're almost 30 games in, so i'd say we're off to a pretty good start.

Complains have had a seasonal theme to them since the lockout, I did a post awhile back outlining them.

What is this year's theme? Lundqvist attack has fizzled out like it always does, ahh.

I think it is the "First line center" deal. The fact that this team doesn't have a premier pivot is the biggest and most consistent argument of the detractors.

Yea I dont think they are a contender. Not on paper at least. Any team could get a hot run behind a lights out goaltender. But they are very much headed in the right direction.

It could be that Stepan is that #1 center we have been looking for, but we will have to wait 3-4 years until he matures into that role.

Its just not an easy role to fill talent and cap wise...

I'm all for patience. We just need to make sure that by being patient, we dont let the years of Callahan, Lundqvist, Dubinsky fizzle away.

Which is part of the reason i'm advocating long term deals for these guys. Not 2 year-to UFA deals, but good 4-6 year contracts.

Lundqvist, of course, is fine. We might even keep him past the end of his contract depending on how his career progresses.

We have an identity and it looks like we'll maintain this one for a while to come.

All of our upcoming prospects- Kreider, Werek, Horak, etc- all fit in the same mold.

Past that, I'm actually confident about this teams future for once. Our prospects, coupled with a solid veteran presence in guys like Callahan and Dubinsky, etc, I'm loving this team.

Thats mainly because by and large everyone on the team is playing up to or surpassing expectations.

The two main guys who played so far behind expectations last season havent been playing....

I think this best surmises my feelings. I see a real future for this bunch. I feel THEY are the hope and not some UFA on a white horse

Believe it or not, Rangers are tied for 2nd place in wins league-wide. 6th place in goal differential. And get this, 4th for GF.

Take that with a grain of salt though as the West are behind by 2-3 games but impressive non-the-less. The issue is, the team has quite a few regulation losses as opposed to OTL like the Flyers, Caps, Thrashers...

Lots of things going right for this team right now. If someone told me Gaborik would miss games and played sluggishly for good parts of the season, Prospal missed every game so far, Drury played only 3 games I would've expected us to be discussing who we should take with that top-3 pick. Secondary scoring baby.

Sure we've played more games than most, but atm we are 4th league wide in points.

Saturday is by far the biggest game of the season...

We took care of Wash, we have taken care of Pittsburgh twice. Saturday against Philly is huge.

If we take out Philly on Sat. I'll be even more impressed. 6-2 so far this month is crazy good and we keep on pulling these wins out,. It shows a lot.

If we could play like we did in the 3rd for all three periods we'd be cup contenders.

You know what though? Third period come backs show this team does have heart and does not like being embarassed, no matter how much more heartbreaking it makes the loss. I'm sure as hell happy though it's young guys like MZA and Stepan helping us come back than Olli Jokinen and Higgins, though.
