We could've gotten couturier if we dropped that game yesterday!? Wow...

I can see murphy available where we are afterall. Hammy might not last to us.

After much deliberation and a lot of reading, I've been sold on Murphy. My big board, fwiw, is as follows given our team and how good each prospect is:
  1. Larsson
  2. RNH
  3. Landeskog
  4. Couturier (If any of the four above are available at 8, you take them.)
  5. Murphy
  6. Strome
  7. Huberdeau
  8. Hamilton

Realistically, our likely pick at this point is Strome. However, if Murphy is around at 8, no worries there. I'm not too fond of Huberdeau or Hamilton but if they're what's left for us, there's not much we can do. If by some miracle Couturier falls to 8, especially after being talked about as first overall material previously, you take him within the first 10 seconds of us being put on the clock.

CSS Final Rankings are out. Some surprises.

North America:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=68892

Europe:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=68894

Hamilton and Beaulieu ahead of Murphy and Couturier? Baertschi in front of Strome? Saad, Biggs, and Puempel all seem criminally low. Brodin in front of Armia is a bit odd too.

I'm interested to see McKenzie's new rankings too.

Biggs/saad/armia are players I wanted to stay away from from thestart. They should go low 1st but they aren't anything special and id take zib and bartschi before any of the three.

Would anyone be upset if Couturier falls to us? I read that he would need another season in juniors to improve his skating. I would be happy if he's there, however, I still feel the bigger need is Murphy, but I'm starting to think he'll be gone when we pick.

No, nobody would be upset if we end up with Couturier. I think it's pretty ridiculous that he has fallen so far in the rankings. I think he should still be in the top 4.

If couturier is at 6, we have to grab him. That stupid win set us back and wasted an asset an asset but couturier is a great talent and he would crack our lineup if we didn't have a glut. Perfect for us.

Maybe I underestimated the amount of late risers and fallers. Someone might stumble to us afterall. Murphy not playing helps and maybe couturier will drop. I don't see how god would allow him to fall to 8 but if he does id cry if we passed him up

Couturier over Murphy for sure. The only player who we have a plausible chance at that I would have trouble deciding between him or Couturier is Huberdeau.

That seems screwed up that Couturier could possibly fall to us, but w/e. If he does, grab him.

Is there any explanation on why he dropped in CSS ranks?

I could see the Thrashers try to squeeze an extra pick out of us or the Jackets if they want Huberdeau/Strome and feel like both of us want the D if they're available. Still expect Florida to take Couturier at 3, would be mildly shocked if he slipped past Ottawa at 5.

Seems like he's been good but not great the last couple months. Central isn't the first place to say that Huberdeau had passed him as the the best QMJHL prospect. Beaulieu being ranked ahead of Couturier is a bit of surprise though.

In Gare Joyce's prospect book, he described Central's final ranking as something the fans could use a free reference rather than something that would influence how the NHL would pick.

Some past Central final rankings:
2003: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hoc...ngs_naskaters/ - Dan Fritsche at 10, Ryan Stone at 12

Pretty excited for the draft party, I might just go for the pick announcement and avoid the ridiculous equipment lines.

Teams' lists vary so much that CSS is often incredibly inaccurate about the rankings. Sometimes they don't even have the right players in the top 30. McKenzie is usually much closer to nailing the eventual first round picks.

I think we can do better than most teams with this pick. Let's hope we get a Setoguchi instead of an Alexeev.

Central is at a disadvantage in that they release their rankings in early April when the CHL playoffs are still ongoing, the U-18 tourney hasn't happened, along with the scouting combine. Much like The Hockey News Draft Preview, some of the info can be outdated by the time the draft rolls around in 9 weeks. McKenzie has the benefit of compiling his rankings after teams are closer to wrapping up their final lists.

---------------------

Futile Mock Draft 4/11/11 version B no trades edition:

1. Edmonton - C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
2. Colorado - D Adam Larsson
3. Florida - C Sean Couturier
4. NY Islanders - LW Gabriel Landeskog
5. Ottawa - LW/C Jonathan Huberdeau
6. Atlanta - C Ryan Strome
7. Columbus - D Dougie Hamilton
8. New Jersey - D Ryan Murphy
9. Boston - D Nathan Beaulieu
10. Minnesota - RW Joel Armia
11. Colorado - LW Sven Bartschi
12. Carolina - D Duncan Siemens
13. Calgary - C Mark McNeill
14. Dallas - D Jamie Oleksiak

Colorado will be interesting now that they have the #11 pick from St. Louis. And naturally, there's a 51.8% chance that somebody other than Edmonton is picking #1. Figure the Isles would take Larsson while the Panthers/Sens would go RNH. Could see Colorado going either way if they were to win.

2010: Burmistrov - very good
2009: Glennie - very good
2005: Setoguchi - solid
2003: Coburn - solid
2002: Pierre-Marc Bouchard - good

Not bad. Agreed with Saugus, we can do better with this pick.

Some scout wrote out of the top 8, that three may play in the NHL, next season. They are: Larsson, Landskog and Hamilton, everyone else is a year or two away.

I can see Larsson going to follow OEL`s footsteps too.
