Leafs Two or Three Pieces From Stanley Cup

Big time optimism from Wilson today. Who's buying the kool-aid?

Title is paraphrase of this...

Quote:
Were probably two or three pieces from being a true contender. Im talking a contender not for the playoffs, Im talking a contender for the Stanley Cup. It may come from within. You dont know. Wilson said he based his optimism on how the young team grew together at the end of the season even if the team makes changes through trades and free agent signings.

he has to know when he says something like that the media will rip him endlessly for it an it will come back to haunt him next year

Here we go again. Two or three pieces away from the playoffs maybe, but the Cup?? I just don't see it unless a bunch of the top teams crumble next year.

Yeah we're just a Sidney Crosby, Drew Doughty and Zach Parise from being cup contenders...

Wilson trying to keep his job after the next year...

Dear Brad Richards

We are only 2 pieces away from the Stanley Cup. You are one of them and we are sure we will sign the other. Please RSVP to Brian on July 1.

Your BFF

Ron Wilson

Has a team that has missed the playoffs six times in row ever been so optimistic to the point that they openly talk about winning the cup?

I agree. We have one of the best 2nd lines in the game for offense. A good foundation in our defense, and good goaltending.

The only really hard one to get is the #1c. Brad Richards would do wonders for this team.

I think the other pieces are a second pairing PMD, like maybe Pitkanen, and some bigger bodies. Preferably a true PF. But a bigger 3rd liner would work as well.

I think as far as internal solutions, it may be a couple years for those players. Gardiner sounds perfect for the 2nd line as a fast skating, puck carrying player, and Colborne is a big strong body. But he is likely a 2nd liner, where there isn't space for him yet.

Adding those players would make any team a contender. Everyone is having a laugh and repeating the same stupid joke over and over again, but its true. We've been one of the best teams in the league for 30 games. If we can add a #1C, how much better are we?

Our defense, goaltending and secondary offense are great, completing a proper 1st line would definitely make us contenders.

It could be true with a lot of IFs:

- Reimer continuing to put the same stats
- Leafs sign/trade for a 80 point center
- Kadri develops to 70 point player
- Kessel becomes a 35 g, 70 point player
- Mac-Grab-Kul can still put up a 60 point season
- Phaneuf actually gains back his old form
- Schenn/Aulie emerges into elite-shut down D
- One of Gunnarson, Blacker, Gardiner surprising to be good to great offensive d-men

But if Leafs can get two great offensive players without sacrificing Kulemin, Kadri or Kessel (I don't mind seeing MacArthur and Grabovski leaving for better players), then we CAN contend for a Cup...but there are big IFs.

First line center an PMD away from being a real contender.

On the flip side, the Leafs beat all the major teams this season...with the exception of Vancouver.

Good teams need depth though. He can say we're three pieces away, but that is not true.

Getting Richards makes us a team that makes the playoffs and knocks around a bit or has a miracle run etc.

Suppose Reimer is playing great, and then he goes down.. do we have the depth to win games without Reimer? Doubt it.

If Kessel is injured? No.

If Schenn is injured? No.

If Lebda is injured? YES!!!

We need depth in all areas before we can truly contend.

Getting a #1C, PMD and a good bottom 6 is just the start to the playoff runs we can have, definitely not SC Cup Contenders right away.

This team will certainly require a number of players on it's current roster to continue to grow and develop, which is very possible. No one or 2 players coming in will make them an instant contender, they need to improve from within too.

Talking about the possibility of winning the cup after all these years of disappointment kinda won't sit well with the media. I think Ron should sit in the corner for a bit, take a time-out, you know? I can definitely see playoffs, but there are some tough teams that I would say are legit Stanley Cup contenders (see Detroit, Vancouver). To top them we would need all of our youth to have career years, develop instant chemistry, and have Reimer stand on his head for the majority of the season.

I get a kick out of this. How many of the people ripping him are the same people that say "Sign Brad Richards and the Leafs will contend for the cup!"?

I think it is more than just top end talent as well. SC teams have crazy depth and the Leafs need to get better in that dept.

It will be interesting to see if depth and role players are brought back or not. Crabb, Brent, Sjostrom (can't see Sjostrom's 5 points in 66 games coming back). Burke seems to love Brown so he isn't going anywhere.

Deleting some of the so called bubble guys makes sense but they do have to be replaced. Ideally with younger more talented kids. Who is there?

The Leafs top scorers all were remarkably healthy and played every game this season (Grabo was suspended once I think?). Chances of avoiding injuries to the top six are not something to take to Vegas. Kadri should help in that dept. though.
