Without Crosby, Jordan Staal thrives in new role for Penguins

As the Pittsburgh Penguins prepare for their opening-round date with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the status of Sidney Crosby's return to lineup remains unknown.
According to the Penguins, despite partaking in morning skates and still not cleared for contact, Crosby still has two more stages to go in his comeback from a concussion. As

Dave Molinari wrote Saturday in the Post-Gazette, with Game 1 of their series beginning Wednesday and without any sort of clearance to play, the odds do not look good for a Crosby return anytime soon.

Enter Jordan Staal.

Just as one Staal argument thread goes down, another begins. Let's see how he does in the postseason.

Apparently Staal can beat Sid "straight up." Whatever the Hell that means. Maybe that's a drinking game? That's the only way I'd see Staal beating Sid at anything.

Maybe at a height-a-thon...? Not sure if that's what "straight up" means or not...

He's gonna have to thrive in the playoffs if the Pens have any chance at all.

Id imagine hes talking about staal being the checking forward on sid. Little far fetched staal could shut sid down but its meant to highlight their differences.

He can certainly shut up a lot of people with a good playoff performance. Conversely I guarantee he's going to be torn to shreds if he doesn't play well and the Pens are bumped in the 1st round. He's got a lot of pressure on his shoulders right now.

It's still unfair for him to have the playoff season of his career when he only played half a season and didn't have a full offseason to prepare for this exact moment. It's an excuse, but a valid one nonetheless.

I completely agree, but it doesn't appear that others think the same way... He's done an incredible job IMO with the circumstances this season has thrown at him.

Its not all on staal. Kunitz and kennedy shouldering some of the responsibility making their line effective every night is what it will come down to. As long as staal doesnt revert back to ****** with giving and receiving passes hell be effective. Testube's gotta play a simpler game or talbot and staal will be doubleshifted with neal and kovy.

jsut read the brief article. so since january he has 11 goals. while not bad not exactly sid production. even though if he had played a full season he would have surpassed 49 pts, his career high. again not exactly sid production. how again has he "thrived"?

if you want to prop the kid up ok, but dont go overboard like this dude did.

He was on pace for career highs, so he may have been thriving by his standards. Seems people always want to hold him to Crosby/Malkin standards, which is unfair to him, imo.

i agree, but since his return i can think of more games that staal was barely noticeable than games he took over. one game by himself that he took over was jsut a few weeks back when he had 3 assists and played like a madman. others do have to step up...this isnt just on staal. the defense and goaltending will be there i believe, but guys like neal (if he plays) kovi, letestu, TK and kuni all gotta step it up.

LETS GO PENS!!

Who else in the league produces at the same production that Sid does? Not even Malkin for a couple seasons now...

The article never said that he was the second coming of Crosby, it said that he thrived in his new role. Being on pace fo a career high would be thriving in the new role. Not every first line center is a 100 point player, so saying he is no "Crosby" is ridiculous.

Staal has played well, for the most part, since he has been back. He's shown obvious rust, but lately he has been good, which is good going into the playoffs. I think, as long as he stays on the line with Kunitz and Kennedy, that he will thrive in the playoffs. That line has been awesome.

If that line plays well, I hope they stick to it next season as the second line and move Malkin to Crosby's right wing.

I am a huge Staal fan, probably my favorite penguin as I have his jersey. But I have been a little disappointed with how he has performed now he has been giving a scoring role. I certainly don't think he is thriving, serviceable is more like it and I hate that term because it defines mediocracy. He typically turns it up in the playoffs so lets hope he does.

Please stop the madness.

Staal's a 4 million dollar player who has certain expectations and has a good niche on the pens. On top of that, he is scoring at a good pace.

So many people think that Staal should step up and produce like a more skilled, higher paid player...thats not why he is here. The bottom line is: its not his fault our two best players are hurt, and it isnt fair to expect him to change his entire game overnight to cover the loss of two of the leagues best players
