if a player has a contract say till 2012/2013 season with a finnish team does that mean he cant go to the NHL until he's contract runs out with current club?

I'm pretty sure there is a transfer agreement between SM-Liiga(?) and the NHL that makes it possible to sign an NHL contract even if the player already has a contract with a Finnish team.

Any semi-legitimate rumors about Joensuu coming back to Finland to play next year? More specifically to play for Assat? It seems that a lot of Islanders' fans think he will head back to Europe if he can't get a 1-way deal in the NHL.

I want to be very clear that this is based only purely on speculation and guesses. Just seems like it would be a great move for Assat and maybe Joensuu's career if he played in the SML for a season or 2.

Nope.

Heavy rumours about Radek Smolenak coming to Ässät though.

Edit. And now it is official. This 6'3 210 physical winger from the Czech Republic is going to play for Porin Ässät next season.

Santavuori - Uusikartano - Armia
Zaborsky - XXXXX - Smolenak
Savinainen - Niemi - Yetman
Mutanen - Sillanpää - Laaksonen
Aaltonen - Ruisma - Mäkilä
Palonen, Virkkunen

Caldwell - Jyrkkiö
Uusitalo - Taimi
Malkamäki - Sammalkangas
Honkanen - Mielonen
(Kudroc - Not sure about next season)

One more quality center and that would be about it.

Mikael Granlund is going to play in the KHL next season. It's official now.

"Sovjetski Sport -lehti päivitti torstaina KHL-liigan pelaajaliikennettä. Lehden listoilla Granlund on merkattu Minskiin ensi kaudeksi tulevien pelaajien listalle."

Jyrki Välivaara (JYP) will play next season in Metallurg (KHL), but he'll return to Jyväskylä in 2012-2013

According to a radio station in Edmonton, the oilers have signed a couple finish league players but have not announced who. All that is given is one is an agitator. Any thoughts or anyone hear anything??

No rumors here... Leo Komarov is agitator but plays in KHL. Other players might be Janne Lahti, Antti Pihlström or Lennart Petrell all from SM-Liiga.

Edit. And Petrell it is...Tyrvainen was a big surprise.

Agitator would probably be either Leo Komarov or possibly Ilari Melart. But I believe Komarov is signed to KHL for next year and haven't heard anything about Melart. There was also a rumor published in Edmonton papers last month that Espoo defenseman Ville Lajunen that the Oilers had shown some interest but other than quotes from the player's agent I haven't seen anything definitive on that. Another physical player that might be of interest is HIFK's Lennart Petrell, a one-time prospect of the Blue Jackets.

edit - Obviously posted this before seeing the article above. Yes, Tyrvainen is a surprise. But at least I got Petrell right. Sort of.

I thought Virmanen only used txt-tv-scouting, no?

I like both of these signings and there's actually a small chance that they could offer something to the Oilers as checking line forwards. IMO this is better than signing a player like Janne Lahti who probably doesn’t have that much to offer at NHL level.
