The Core

Hey everybody, first post but long time reader. I have read these boards religiously for years now and have finally decided to post. I have been bored with no Rangers hockey since Saturday and have to wait until Wednesday for Game 1. I am very excited and think we match up well against the Capitals and can make this a series. With all that said I have been bored and have been doing research and thinking about the core of our team. I was curious to who you fans believe are the core of this team and will be here for years to come.

Going into next year I think we will see a team similar of:

?-Brad Richards-Marian Gaborik
Brandon Dubinsky-Artem Asminov-Ryan Callahan
?-Derek Stepan-?
?-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust

I really do believe we will sign Richards by finding ways to either unload or hide the contracts of Drury, Avery, and Boogard. I like Prospal but each years hes getting older and an injury risk and I think it is time to move on from him, the same with Chistensen. If we get Richards there is no reason to hold on to him anymore. That leaves four holes on the offense which I believe we can fill in house. I like Wolski and think he can be useful on the third line.

Maybe Zuccarello or Grachev or the kid we signed today could step up and give us a solid third line. The biggest hole that leaves us would be a first line LW.

Then I love our defense and still have a lot of faith in Del Zotto. Maybe bring back Eminger or bring up someone from the minors to pair with him.

Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Sauer
Del Zotto-?

I think we have a nice core of players in Staal, Girardi, McDonagh, Del Zotto, Sauer, Dubinsky, Callahan, Lundqvist, Amisinov, Stepan, and Boyle. That is a lot of you players with a ton of talent to go along with FA signings Gaborik and Richards.

Can someone please update me on our minors situation and if we have any big time prospects who can fit into this core and what their ceilings are. I think if this young talent continues to develop with Lunqvist in his prime and Gaborik back on track, were not to far from being a serious cup contedner.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Just a quick note, I see no guarantee that Del Zotto makes the team.

With the news that Krieder is probably staying at BC, I could see something like;

Dubinsky/UFA (Simon Gagner?)-Richards-Gaborik
UFA/Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan
Wolski-Stepan-Zucc
Hagelin-Boyle-Prust

Other options; Horak, Werek, Thomas, Grachev

D:
Staal-Girardi
McD-Sauer
Insert any two of Del Z, Valentenko, McLIrath, Kundratek, Pashnian, Pitkannen, Markov (), Ehrhoff, Corvo, McCabe

Henrik
Biron

I personally see Wolski being traded with some other prospects/picks for a young top line winger.

We have a great amount of talented blueliners such as Kundratek, Pashnin, and V-tank who can easily come in and play bottom pairing minutes for us. Im not sure Del Zotto is a shoe in at the momment but we dont really need to sign any big name free agents on defense. What we really need is top line forward talent.

No to Simon Gagne. I rather go after Ville Leino or Jussi Jokinen.

I think the biggest thing the team needs to over come is it's youth and inexperience.

The Core is solid, but unspectacular. We have to develop a game breaker, a spectacular talent from one our prospects IMO. That said I am not sold on acquiring more expensive FA's. I would rather have a less talented team that struggles than FA's that don't perform. Been there, done that.

I'll tell you this if we acquire Richards and Gaborick falls flat coming out of the gate.....man it could get a little crazy in Rangers land.

My prediction (although I think we won't get Richards, as much as I want him, because they won't get rid of Drury):

Wolski/UFA - Richards (please!) - Gaborik
Dubinsky - Anisimov - Callahan
Wolski/UFA/Grachev - Stepan - Zuccarello
Fedotenko/Hagelin/Weise - Boyle - Prust

Staal - Girardi
Sauer - McDonagh
McCabe/Del Zotto - Eminger

Lundqvist
Biron

That is a team that could do some damage.

We need Richards and probably another scoring winger, IMO.

Second line down I feel absolutely great about this team. 1st line, not so much.

Ugh, terrible year for top talent forward wise in free agency.

No to any of these players. They're 2nd line forwards that will get up to 1st line money, and turn into more overpaid players. Do not want.

Richards or bust. Nobody else fills the Rangers needs so perfectly. Then in 2012, hope Burns hits the FA market, and you're set.

Actually, I'd take Gagne on a cheap, 1 year deal, but that's about it.

Richards again? Richards can shove it up...eh we're in the playoffs, I'm in a good mood, I'll be nice. I see...

Prospal-Richards(A)-Gaborik
Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan(C)
Wolski-Stepan-Zuc
Feds/Heavyweight-Boyle-Prust

Staal(A)-Griardi
Sauer-McDonagh
Valentenko-Eminger/MDZ

I think Prospal stays, Dru walks, we sign Richards, Sather shops for a Heavyweight, and Valentenko gets a long look at camp with a good chance of making it (I like him). I also think Richards gets the A over Dubi based on Cup experience. Not what I would do, but I see the Rangers doing it.

Way too much wishful thinking when it comes to Drury. What makes you all so certain he is walking instead of playing out his 1 year?

If Slats needs to buy him out to afford Richards, i'm sure he will.

Potentially we could fit both Drury and Richards next year. But it'd be so long to Avery, Boogaard, and likely Wolski as well.

As far as adding to the core, I think both Richards and Andrei Markov fill roles that we really have no one in the system who can fill right now.

This isn't Wade Redden who isn't as proud or accomplished as Drury as a hockey player. You guys are thinking way too simple for something that really isn't that simple. I'd love to eat crow when the time comes, but personally I think Drury plays out his contract.

Would love to have Andrei Markov. If you can replace McCabe with him that would be phenomenal.

To hell with that, he'll limp off after 3 games like he always does.

Ew. That's how In feel about Markov. Back to back major leg injuries, no thanks. He's one hit away from a career ender.

Just wait and sign Burns next offseason, him + Staal would become a top-5 pairing. Then trade Girardi to fill in another hole.

I would be surprised if Grachev didnt make the Rangers next season. With his size, playmaking, and versatility (can take draws, can kill penalties) I just dont see him being left in the minors.

Avery, Christensen are both likely gone.

Dont know where my earlier post went, but I think Grachev makes the squad next season. He has the size, versatility (can take draws, can kill penalties) to make a difference as a 3rd/4th line wing. I think he could take Avery's spot.

How are we going to fit Richards, Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, Sauer, Boyle AND a scoring winger under the cap?

Not happening.

If we sign Richards, it means Drury is gone.

What ever space is left it will be used to extend our extremely important RFAs.

The news about Kreider is 100% speculation. The Rangers have not offered him an ELC and won't until May when classes are finished.

There are going to be rookies on the roster in October. There will have to be for both financial reasons and progression reasons.
