Did You Know?
  • Despite missing 41 games this season Sidney Crosby won 546 faceoffs, enough to lead the Penguins by 121 over Maxime Talbot, who played all 82 games. He finished 45th overall in the league in that category. No one finishing above him missed more than 20 games.
  • Tampa Bay scored only one short-handed goal all season, an unassisted goal by Nate Thompson, totaling a league-low 1 point short-handed as a team. Pittsburgh amassed 29 SHPs this year, with a 2nd best 13 SHGs.
  • While this is the first time these two franchises have ever met in the playoffs this isn't the first time the two cities have been entangled in a conflict. One of the inaugural Arena Football League franchises, the Pittsburgh Gladiators, moved to Tampa Bay in 1991 to become the Tampa Bay Storm. The Storm are the oldest team in the AFL and are tied with the neighboring Orlando Predators (1991 expansion team) for longest serving team in a specific market. With the opening of the Consol Energy Center the Pittsburgh market again has been filled, by an ownership team including former Steeler WR and Hall-of-Famer (and failed Republican Gubernatorial candidate) Lynn Swann with the Pittsburgh Power. The team could not retain the initial Gladiators name of the 1987-91 team because an independent AFL franchise from Cleveland now uses that name...of course it would be Cleveland stealing from Pittsburgh. In the current season the expansion Power are 2-2 while the Storm are 1-3. A large reason for this series scheduling is because the Power are hosting the Jacksonville Sharks on Saturday afternoon. This coupled with a multitude of NBA-shared arenas hosting games on Wednesday and Tampa hosting the rodeo over thew weekend, gave berth to the W-F-M-W schedule we have.
  • With the 5th generation release of Pokemon Nintendo achieved the quickest sales to one million (Japan), five million (Japan), and largest opening day sales in the U.S. (~300k more than the previous generation's Diamond and Pearl releases). Keep in mind those numbers are for one day, aside from the 5 million Japanese number, which took 3 months to achieve.
  • Tampa Bay left winger Ryan Malone was the first Pittsburgh born and trained hockey player to reach the NHL, drafted in 1999 and reaching the league in 2003, but as many as 5 Pittsburgh born and trained players are expected to be drafted this year, including Brandon Saad (Gibsonia) who could be the highest drafted Pittsburgher ever (19th ranked North American; R.J. Umberger went 16th overall to Vancouver in 2001). The others are fellow Saginaw teammate Vincent Trocheck (Pittsburgh, 42nd), and USNDP teammates J.T. Miller (Moon, 23rd), John Gibson (Pittsburgh, 1st NA Goalies), & Barrett Kaib (Upper St. Clair, UNR). Gibson, Saad, Miller, Trocheck, and 19th ranked NA Goalie Michael Houser were all teammates on the Pittsburgh Hornets AAA team.
  • The Pittsburgh Hornets call the RMU Island Sports Center home. The ISC opened in 1998 and allowed the Robert Morris Colonials to begin playing ice hockey at the Division I level in 2004. The Colonials, along with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Consol Energy Center, will host the 2013 Frozen Four.
  • The 2012 Frozen Four will be held at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida. Without a NCAA Division 1 program in the state the host school is actually the University of Alabama-Huntsville, an old CHA rival of RMU. When College Hockey America ceased men's hockey after the 2009-10 season the Chargers were left as an Independent. Robert Morris and Niagara joined Atlantic Hockey, Bemidji State the WCHA, and Nebraska-Omaha the CCHA.
  • The 2014 Frozen Four is the most distant one scheduled, and will be held in Philadelphia. This Frozen Four doesn't have a single host, as the entire ECAC will be considered hosts. The only two Division 1 programs in Pennsylvania are in the western part of the state thus far (Mercyhurst in Erie and Robert Morris in the Pittsburgh suburb of Moon Township). Penn State will begin Division 1 hockey in 2012-13, however, almost exactly midway between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Princeton is, and will remain, the closest college hockey program to Philadelphia.
  • Penn State's ice hockey program is being started thanks to a $88 million gift by Penn State alumni and new Buffalo Sabres owner Jim Pegula. Pegula Ice Arena will seat 6,000 and represents the single largest gift in Penn State history. Penn State will eventually join other Big Ten members Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to form a hockey conference aspect of the Big Ten.
  • The Flaming Lips were formed in Norman, Oklahoma in 1983; revelling largely in obscurity until signing with Warner Bros. and having a minor hit in 1993's 'She Don't Use Jelly' (hitting #9 on the U.S. Alternative chart and #55 on the Billboard charts, the only song that has ever charted for the band).
  • Flaming Lips lead singer Wayne Cogne was born in Pittsburgh's Troy Hill neighborhood in 1961, but was raised in Norman, Oklahoma. Coyne still lives in the neighborhood he grew up in.
  • Do You Realize?? was listed as the Official Rock Song of Oklahoma in 2009, making it one of only two Official Rock Songs of a state. Ohio's naming of The McCoys' 'Hang on Sloopy' in 1985 being the only other, with part of the language of the bill passing the song to be the official rock song of Ohio including the language: "WHEREAS, Adoption of this resolution will not take too long, cost the state anything, or affect the quality of life in this state to any appreciable degree, and if we in the legislature just go ahead and pass the darn thing, we can get on with more important stuff." The passing in Oklahoma was slightly more heartfelt...though the measure actually fell short of the required votes in the state House of Representatives, as Republicans shied away from the band because they have used 'offensive language' in other songs. Democratic Governor Brad Henry made the song official with an executive order after it failed to pass through the House.
  • The Flaming Lips are largely known for their live performances, which are as elaborate as they are fanciful, and have been regulars at annual music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Sasquatch. The band will be one of the headliners for the Sasquatch! Festival again this year, playing mostly songs from their 1999 album The Soft Bulletin (only 4 albums released since have received such a score upon first release and #3 on the site's top albums of the decade list).
  • While holding that rarest of titles, as one of an elite few perfect 10s on Pitchfork, the band also holds an equally rare title...holder of an imperfect 0, with 1997's Zaireeka. Zaireeka is the very definition of experimental rock...requiring four CD players to play the four CDs simultaneously. The concept garnered both acclaim (NME scored it a perfect 10) and disdain (aforementioned 0). I've yet to give it the proper treatment because I'd have to buy three new CD players in order to do so...
  • The follow-up to 1999's The Soft Bullet was 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots saw the acid rockers take a more electronic influence. The result was the band's first RIAA certified gold album (a nice relief for record label WB, who, admirably, stuck with the band for over a decade with little commercial success and oddball albums). The album also brought the band a Grammy, as the closing track, Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia), won the 2003 Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Piece.
  • The band would again win a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Piece with their next album, At War With the Mystics. The Wizard Turns On... The Giant Silver Flashlight and Puts on His Werewolf Moccasins won the same award, and the album also won a technical award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Despite this the album is considered to be one of the band's weaker releases.
  • 2009's Embryonic, a double album, brought the band back to elite status, thanks in part to the help from MGMT, Karen O, and the German mathematician Dr. Thorsten Wörmann. For my money the closing song, Watching the Planets, is one of the best album closers in the past decade.
  • For 2011 the band announced that it would release a song for every month, while filming the experiment. The first song released was Two Blobs ****ing, which must be watched on 12 YouTube screens simultaneously to be heard as intended.

The start of what will hopefully be a long playoff run. Need some stellar defense, goaltending, and PK. Everybody needs to step up on the offensive side of things.

If this series comes down to shorthanded goals, we got this.

Great GDT. I love playoff time more than any other time of year. My two exams tomorrow and Friday will suffer for it though.

Even if the Pens don't win I'll be satisfied as long as it's a dominating physical performance. Grind 'em down!

Out of all the teams I've watched, this one just has that extra something. I want to see this team succeed more than any Pens team. Down Sid, Geno, and all the other injuries... it would be a hollywood story if we came out on top. Obviously we'll need a crap load of luck and a player to step up and be unreal. After that, we'd need Sid to come back and be in mid-season form. Obviously that's a lot to ask for.

It's obviously not in the cards this season and I'm very proud of the team for even being in this position, but damn it'd be that much better if that made this happen.

Love the GDT. "Do you realize" was stuck in my head, all summer, what an awesome song. Thanks for that tidbit about the four-CD play at the same time thing. I wonder if I could fake it by ripping them to my computer and playing them all through an audio mixing program? Might not have the same effect.

With that out of the way...

morning skate lines:

Kunitz-Staal-Kennedy
Neal-Letestu-Kovalev
Dupuis-Talbot-Conner
Rupp-Adams-Asham

Comrie-Crosby-Godard
(Tangradi)

only real decision to make was conner over comrie, which isn't surprising. that third line has been serviceable as of late.
