Minor rumor from Spector's: Eric Meloche to Philly?

Yea, you hate Spector or whatever. He doesn't make stuff up, he just reports it. Anyway...

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Dave Molinari reports Penguins minor league wingers Tom Kostopoulos and Eric Meloche are close to signing with other teams as unrestricted free agents. Kostopoulos claims to be close to a deal with the LA Kings while Meloche is considering an offer from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Meloche statistics: http://hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisp...id%5B%5D=26133

More or less, yeah. He has pretty good wheels but not much in the way of skills or hockey sense. Not overly impressive defensivly, and has a bad tendency to take dumb penalties at times.

Depth move for the Flyers, I would guess. I wasn't too sad to see him go.

i really hope he isnt signed, he is thuroughly unimpressive and lack luster, i would rather see the phantoms stacked with prospects rather than filler garbage

"filler garbage" isn't the best way to desribe Meloche. He's a good enough depth player to have in case of injury, and he is a very good player at the AHL level.

However, the Pens seem to think he is a depth player, and he wants to go somewhere where he can contend for a third/fourth line spot. So I would say that if Philly is really going to sign him, they must think he could be a fourth line option at least.

Yeah, that's fair I guess. I just don't see the Flyers playing him regularly at the NHL level is all. They have better options.

He IS a good AHLer though. Take that for what it's worth.

Let's take a look at some of the Phantoms next year (assuming a lockout):

Patrick Sharp
Antero Niittymaki
Dennis Seidenberg
Rosario Ruggeri
RJ Umberger
Brent Robinson
Stephen Wood
Ben Eager
Randy Jones
Freddy Meyer

And maybe even Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, and Stefan Ruzicka.

Some people pretend like other AHL teams are 100% prospects and no veterans. They are certainly only looking at the Phantoms roster, and probably one from years ago.

He's not too bad. He's got great wheels, finishes his checks, he's a good leader and can play all three forward positions. A good team guy with a big heart.

You could do a lot worse, he'll be a decent reserve forward for you when he signs.

would be a good pickup. Figure he will be our first call up in case of an injury. The man who held that position, Kirby Law, is gone. Certainly in the early part of the season... Ruzicka, Eager, Umberger, wont be ready for the NHL. People like him are good to have around
