I've watched this guy play, oh about 20 full games for Union.

He has potential. Smart goaltender with quick legs who likes to play the puck.

So this signing should be official sometime soon, right?

Nice. Always good to have more goalie prospects in the system.

This is encouraging. I hope he impresses in the AHL.

1.99 GAA and a 25-10-3 record last season, nice.
collegiate totals: 37-18-6, with four shutouts, and a 2.18 goals-against average in 63 appearances.

It's true ECAC is a relatively weak and very defensive league, but Scrivens was ECAC and he put up some very good numbers in the AHL this year.

Half of the games of just about every ECAC team are out of conference. Kinkaid was Union's best player all season and a big reason they went into the tourney ranked in the nation's top 5.

The ECAC is fine. It isn't the hockey east, but its hardly the Atlantic. Besides, that would be more of a concern if you were taking a Union skater, but Kinkaid is a stud. Really wanted this kid. Instead we got Missiaen. Joy.

I played in front of Mike McKenna for a few years, and he isn't close to as good as this kid.

Kinkaid joins Scott Wedgewood and Maxime Clermont, who were drafted last June.

“You have three goaltenders now – two we drafted – and Jeff Frazee is still in the mix and, now, (Kinkaid) is without question a top prospect.” Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said today.

Lamoriello was pleased to land Kinkaid, who was an AHCA First-team All-American this past season.

“There’s no question he’s an outstanding prospect,” Lamoriello said. “He was one of the top goaltenders in college hockey the last couple of years. We didn’t encourage him to leave. He made a decision that he wanted to leave and once we knew that there were a lot of teams interested in him. We visited and spent some time with him and he made a decision over the weekend.”

Kinkaid, 21, just completed his sophomore season at Union (more details on his college performance are in the previous post). He was passed over in the draft, so he is a bit of a late bloomer.

“You’d have to look at it that way because he didn’t get drafted, but kids are getting into college older now and, especially goaltenders, they develop a little later,” Lamoriello said. “In his case, he’s just come on and has played very well in top-level hockey in college.”

Lamoriello said right now he expects Kinkaid to play in the AHL next season.

“That’s where we would have him penciled, but he’ll determine that in training camp,” he said. “But that’s where he would be penciled if we had to do something today.”

Frazee, a 2005 second-round pick who will turn 24 on May 13, is slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1. Lamoriello said he remains in the team’s future plans.

Goaltender Mike McKenna, who played in two NHL games for the Devils this season, will probably not be re-signed when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

That's too bad for McKenna, but I always did get the feeling that he was a plug. And I'm sure he knew it too. Best of luck to him.

After hearing what Lou said there I'm getting a feeling he won't be taking a goalie in the draft and if he does he won't pick one until later. He seems to be happy with what he has. I still think we could use another legitimate goalie prospect.

Someone told me the Devils feel he is "Ryan Miller-esque".

Not exactly sure what that means as far as projection but a pretty lofty comparison.

4 goalie prospects at various stages of development in the system is enough. Unless Lou feels Frazee has busted completely, his decision to stand pat for goalies is fine.

If you want to hear something crazy, the people commenting on that post from TG's blog want Lou to draft a goalie with the fourth overall pick. Is that crazy, or is that totally crazy?

I got that feeling too. He sounded like a nice guy, but you knew the Devils were pretty close, or were at rock bottom, when he got in the lineup.

That is absolutely crazy. I thought I would have gotten more resistance with wanting Hellberg or Perhonen with our second pick in the draft.
1. I don't even think there is a goalie that is that outstanding to warrant a pick that high.
2. We aren't THAT desperate for a goalie
3. There are so many more reasons why that is crazy

I just don't feel like Frazee will ever cut it in the NHL. I'm not even comfortable with him as a backup. He lacks consistency in his game and health. I don't think Lou should rely on him.

Well, bye bye epic street hockey pads, bye bye epic Chico mask, it`s just the way it is. He`s expendable. We need to find a goalie to take Marty`s job after he retires and Mike isn`t even an NHL backup, so there`s no point to keep him. Now, with Kinkaid sign, definitely.

That's just the mentality of a casual fan who doesn't know the in's and out's like the majority of us do. Isn't their faults they just don't know.

Now If anyone here thinks we should do that... I'll stab ya in the face with a soldering iron.
