In years past this team has responded well to things like this. Icing a 4th line that can play more than 2.5 minutes a game is going to be key, and whoever gets the nod to play in Ryan's slot needs to step up.
I completely agree with the suspension, 1-2 games was what was deserved for that play. Nobody should be surprised.
Oh Bobby Ryan, when will you learn? Next time you feel like stepping on somebody's foot, elbow two people in the head instead.
Well, yeah, the play was kind of dumb, but Bobby must feel crappy right now - very dangerous play against him at the end of the season with no consecuences, and now he makes less dangerous play and gets suspended for 2 games.
Charge up for the many games after suspension, Bobby!
On the bright side you would hope this means the Ducks get competent officiating now so the league doesn't look biased. And competent officiating will get a number of Ducks PP, which don't rely on Ryan. I think there is still hope.
Assuming the league gives a crap about not looking biased.
What a loss. Likely PG will be less effective 5 on 5.
I'm not sure Belesky is ready for prime time and since we can't choose matchups on faceoffs, I think Winchester is the right move there. That will force Trotz to put major beef against that line and less likely to try and take advantage of the rookie 3rd line.
I'd also like to see Parros benched for this game and put Marchant Ruttu and someone defensively responsible on the 4th line so that Carlyle has an option to eat minutes if the 3rd line gets overwhelmed.
We're going to need to huge defensive games and try to win these games 2-1... really tighten up on odd man chances and getting beat on give and goes.
As was pointed out to me, there is a lot of intent with a stomp, regardless of the outcome. I'm upset of the suspension but that's more with the inconsistent discipline than anything. It's deserved and let's be glad it is just 2 games and that it wasn't one of Getzlaf/Perry/Selanne/Visnovsky making the play. Ryan is huge but we will, hopefully, survive without him.
I too would enjoy seeing Palmieri instead of Sexton but who knows. Didn't he have chemistry with Koivu (and Ryan)?
I have no issue with the suspension, I thought 1 game max but obviously the NHL disagrees.
I do, however have an issue with the consistency. Stolls hit was far more dangerous than Ryans stomp and he gets one game. Demers takes a flying leap at Smyth and gets nothing. Cooke charges into Tyutin at full speed from behind and only gets four. Yet Ryan, someone with no prior incidents gets two for a harmless (although stupid) stomp.
What about Winchester on the top line? He seems to cycle decently and if he is used to screen Rinne that could be beneficial.
Problem is, Winchester has no hands whatsoever, he can't make or finish a play to save himself and mishandles the puck on the cycle frequently.
I have no idea what the bias against Beleksey is, he's the best fit on the top line style wise and has had success there before. In 09-10 he had 0 goals in his first 21 games playing on the third and fourth lines and then went on to have 11 in 39 games playing on the top line, good for a 23 goal pace. This year he's looked lost at times but I really see no other option. Unless they think Palmieri can step in and play efficiently with the twins.
