Looks like if Fletcher can't trade Cam Barker by Thursday, he'll buy him out.

http://www.startribune.com/sports/wi...tml?page=2&c=y

Only one season left on his contract at a $3m cap hit. He'll be RFA after that.

Very unreliable, they spew out this crap all the time. Most of the time they speculate to create hits (and we get suckered into it because it's something to read). All of those blogs are really just opinions, rather than facts.

We have Malone for like 15 more years.

I know it's unlikely in the scheme of things, but what about Erik Cole?
Cole is intriguing, injury history aside. If we were to trade Malone for some reason (obviously for Komisarek and/or Lebda), then I would think he'd be a suitable replacement. He can play top 6 minutes, hits, can skate very well, protects the puck well and goes into the dirty areas.

He would be a very good addition to our blueline. He has his fair share of mental lapses in the defensive zone, but hopefullly Boucher's system and attention to defense could improve his game/hide his shortcomings. Very smooth skater, good shot from the point, solid passer and is physical. Also, we could probably get him for cheaper on a one year deal (1.5-2.5mil) because he was bought out and coming off a few bad years.

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,396,916; BONUSES: $2,737,500; CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $3,903,084

Just playing around with a few numbers. This would leave over $2 million for another solid D or even more in case of a trade (Clark?).
Changes I made were in bold. This is the opening day roster I would like to see for 2011-12. Team salary was calculated with Ian White's proposed $3.250m salary, opposed to Cam Barker's proposed $2.500m salary. I think Ashton needs (or at least could benefit from) a year in the minors before making the jump to the NHL.

I would actually try to bring in Cole for $2.5million to be an upgrade over Bergenheim.

Sami Lepisto and Anton Stralman were not qualified by Columbus.

Bergfors, Bernier, and Bitz were not qualified by Florida. Apparently, they forgot they existed too.

Former Bolt (briefly) Alexander Picard is not being qualified by Montreal.

Good to see we are holding onto Helenius and Harju's rights. Also interesting to see Jackson get an offer. I think he's better than Quick or Mihalik right now, but he doesn't exactly fit in here.

Hopefully Lundin is getting signed soon.

Wouldn't mind trying Stralman or Bitz at all as depth signings.

I see the Lundin wasn't qualified, and I can also see that most Lightning fans think a deal is going to happen before July 1. But....on the off chance that it doesn't could someone give me a scouting report on him. Is he primarily a defensive dman? Hows his first pass out of the zone, his stats don't make him look very physical - does he shy away from contact? How's his skating? Does he PK or play the PP?

He's a very soft player, but has very good mobility and has been our best defensive d-man over the past 2 seasons. He can match up against skilled forwards on the opposing teams top lines and can handle a good amount of minutes. He was also a regular on the PK. He doesn't have great numbers on offense, but he has good vision and a pretty good first pass. His shot, however, isn't one of his strengths.

His biggest weakness is his lack of strength and physicality. He was exposed in the playoffs for not being able to handle some of the bigger, grittier guys on the other team banging him around and winning physical battles. I think he will come to camp having gained some strength, and it won't be as much of an issue next season.

I'm surprised he wasn't qualified, but I would be shocked if Yzerman gave up on him that quickly. I expect him back next season.

I doubt we see Helenius back in N.A. but by sending him an offer we can still hold onto his rights. Who knows maybe another Ramo like deal will happen again for us sometime in the future.

Bieksa got a 5-year deal with Vancouver.

It's sort of hilarious that we build certain players up for weeks or months, and the options that end up being pursued at the end of the day are the ones that only came up recently.

Also, EE just tweeted why Lundin didn't get a QO. Lundin was going to take them to arbitration, and SFY was concerned that the award would be larger than he would like. He's still interested in bringing him back.

Well played, Lundin's agent, but SFY countered your move.

Don't like the Lundin non-qualifying, even if its being done to avoid arbitration. Means he's probably getting a decent chunk more than anyone expected, here or elsewhere. I think Lundin now has the power to make more money and/or a longer term on his contract than he'd have been rewarded through arbitration. The unneccesary added pressures of getting a deal done now or being content to lose him entirely is a lose lose situation.

Hope a deal gets done, but, am far less optimistic about it now. Yzerman probably wants to fit a few other things into place more importantly than Lundin in the overall structure and I don't see there being a shortage of interest in Lundin as a UFA.

About Lundin, I can see why SY would be worried about the guy getting a large arbitration award simply based on his reg season TOI...

Reg Season: 20:24 TOI/GP (of that, 2:35 on the PK)

With Brewer in the fold, Lundin is not going to get those types of minutes as was demonstrated by his PO totals...

Playoffs: 14:40 TOI/GP (of that, 1:50 on the PK)

But as a desirable top 6 d-man on a team with a shallow blueline corp, I'd imagine Lundin is going to try to parlay his impressive reg season TOI into a multi-million dollar, multi-year contract on the UFA market, which SY will obviously avoid, knowing who his team's real top four are now.

Not a good situation at all. This team is already glaringly thin in regards to young defensemen - Lundin may be in need of some strength training, but he is positionally sound. Not bringing him back looks like an extremely bad idea. Smaby I can understand but certainly never expected Lundin not to be qualified.

Yup. I have been blowing up Lundin for ages but the playoffs really exposed the fact that he really struggles against teams that attack him physically, and thats not a guy you want eating big minutes in the playoffs.
