Do I have to read this entire thread? It's been obvious for a decade that Columbus, Ohio is in the East and the CBJ should be in the NHL East as well..
That said, not happin. Few in the top brass of the NHL even care.

Well, you maybe don't have to read the whole thread but you might read the story linked in the OP.

I think I am missing something. I understand how the CBJ in the East would help the CBJ television package and boost ratings. However I am pretty sure Atlanta is a bigger market then Phx. Neither market really screams for hockey fans, however. It's probably harder to build hockey into the local culture there with the weather, spring baseball, etc. Not sure there are that many hockey rinks, etc in either market.
First new spin I've seen on the issue in a while and seems to explain the desire for the NHL to stay in Phx. It also gives a reasonable explanation on the alleged desire for the NHL to move Columbus or Nashville to the East.
Having said that, I like the brand of hockey in the West better. I would hate to lose that competition. Playing Buffalo, the Pens, and Philly 15 times a year (or more) does nothing for me. Or worse yet, the Rangers. I know that's not the case for the majority of the fans.
I'd miss the competition in the West, but I wouldn't miss all those late night games. Even the central time zone games are rough with an 8 year old that wants to watch the game on a school night.
Furthermore, I'm pretty confident we'd have made the playoffs a few more seasons in the East.

Yeah, as I said I get the television ratings increase.
I don't consider Nashville an "Eastern" team since they are based in the Central time zone. If two teams are going to move to the East it should be Detroit and Columbus since they are both in the Eastern time zone.
If it comes down to only one team moving to the East, we all know the tired, old debate...
Columbus: "We're further East than Detroit!"
Detroit: "We have dibs on moving to the East because we're an Original Six team!"
Aye carumba.
The NHL has been promising Detroit to move them to the East for well over ten years now. Not only the ownership has wanted this but I'd say the majority of the fanbase.
However, with how big of a draw Detroit is in the west, no chance in hell the league will do this.
If a team had to move East, have no worries. It would be Columbus.
Well, Phoenix has been eliminated. Was last nights game the last game played in Phoenix?
Well, all that would lead to is a western conference divisional shakeup, right? We'd most likely be staying put in the central if Phoenix moves to Winnipeg, right?

I'd think you're right, it'd take a move by an Eastern conference team to generate a change in our position. There's been talk of Atlanta or Florida relocating, but it's only talk. Isn't one of the NY area teams also in that discussion, as well?

The simplest of solutions is to switch Colorado & Phoenix/Winnipeg. I'd also rename the Pacific the SouthWest.
Pacific - Dallas, Colorado, San Jose, Anaheim, Los Angeles
NW - Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, Minnesota
Agree Atlanta is further West then both Columbus & Detroit. But it makes sense (regional rivalries) to have Atlanta in a division with Florida, Tampa & Carolina. If you would toss Nashville in that division instead of Washington, you would have a solid Confederate South division.
If the NHL would just go to a schedule where teams play 4 homes and 4 aways in-division, and play 1 home & away with everyone else in the NHL, then the whole travel issue is spread out among the league.

NSH, CAR, ATL, TBL, and FLA would make sense as a division. It's not like the conferences couldn't change... it's happened before right?
Tom Glavine wants to help keep the Atlanta Thrashers in town, even if that means rallying a team of investors and becoming a partial owner himself, the Atlanta Braves great told 11Alive's Fred Kalil. He says he doesn't want the team to have to leave.
Quote:
With NHL commissioner Gary Bettman saying Wednesday he expects the Thrashers to play in Atlanta next season, the chances of the team moving to Winnipeg or elsewhere look to be shrinking little by little. There's still a long way to go, but Glavine publicly expressing interest will raise local awareness at very least.
I'm pretty sure the western owners would want to give up the ticket money that detroit fans bring in.... that is in favor of us
I'm not sure there's that much ticket money being given up. They still show up at hockey games around the nation wearing redwings jerseys even if Detroit isn't playing...

The chances would decrease significantly. Winnipeg would stay in the West, but if Atlanta moved to a Western market like Portland, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Salt Lake, etc., the door is open again.
Given our home vs away record, maybe playing closer to home isn't a good idea
Btw... "East" is a relative concept. Where I live we are farther east than Bermuda but the average Crucian does not believe it until you show dem the longitude. They think they're due south of Florida.
