Three games in a row for the lower ranked team at home seems a little too much. If they win one game in the first two away games, it seems like they gain too much of a home ice advantage. But at the same time, the more intense games, 6 and 7, are away if the series goes on.
The 2-2-1-1-1 format is just better, in my opinion.
But I would like to see the 1 and 2 seeds have 5 home games. It would be 3 at home, 2 away, then 2 at home.
I like the top teams having more of an advantage.
In fact, what I would do if have a Wild Card round for seeds 7-10. It would be a best of three series. This would allow the top teams to rest and heal, while making it that much more difficult for teams that barely squeaked in to move on to further rounds. Plus the top 2 teams get to play tired teams.
I think the value of the regular season should be increased. It shouldn't just be that a team that wins its conference has only a tiny advantage over a team that made it the way the Rangers did this year.
2-2-1-1-1 is way better. If the higher seeded team loses one game at home, they will have three road games in a row. That's pretty dumb and it's not an advantage whatsoever. The way the NHL has it is much more fair.
2-3-2 doesn't work because the current structure it to guarantee that the team w/ home ice advantage gets a greater then or equal # of home games regardless of how long the series lasts, whereas guaranteeing the team without home ice advantage 2 games at home.
Keep in mind this is a business. I don't think a team would be too happy if the won home ice advantage and got home games then the other team because the series went 5 games.
2-3-2 is horrible. Game five is often a huge game in a series, and the team with the better record should be at home in game five. 2-3-2 puts ridiculous pressure on the team who earned the better record to win the first two games. Three straight home games gives the team with the worse record way too much home ice momentum. 2-3-2 is terrible on so many levels.
2-2-1-1-1 is definitely better. Lower seed team should NOT play more home games at any point in the series. Simple as that.
I despise the 2-3-2 format. Its such BS that the higher seed has only played 2 home games to the lower seed's 3 home games after game 5. It also gives the lower seed 3 games to build momentum going back on the road, if the series even lasts that long. Totally unfair. The reduced travel in no way justifies it.
