Honest question. Would you guys be happy with Giguere for two or three years while we let Bob develop? He has the ability to steal games for you (ask Pronger) and the ability to actually record a shutout .

Also who would you be willing to trade for him if you were interested?

Hell No. How is us going with an old goalie who has had multiple bad years back to back an upgrade? john vanbiesbrouck ring a bell? Marty Turco? Just cause they "were good" doesn't mean they will be again.

1. Bryz
2. Vokoun
3. Roloson
4. Massive trade for a top goalie
If 1-4 fail, then we are going into next year with goalie questions. Ain't it grand.

P.S. I fully suspect next year to begin with "hope" being our best friend. We "hope" Bob will be the guy. We "hope" the piece of crap we signed will play well. Puck.

The word out of Toronto is that Giguere has a hip problem and that's why he was so bad this year. The hip problem might be bad enough to force him into retirement. That was the reason why he had so many groin pulls last year. If he were healthy, it would be a different story, but he hasn't been healthy for awhile.....

No, but if you asked me "what free agent goaltender is most likely to sign here on July 1" I would say Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

No. JSG is not Flyer material.
Ilya Bryzgalov is the #1 target.

I want Bryz. Or trade for Nabokov. Someone who speaks Russian like Bob.

Giggy had groin surgery. He didn't play all that well for us this year, but I do think he'd be an improvement over Boucher, especially if the surgery helps him (it did in the past).

I suppose there's still a remote possibility we'll resign him though.

I heard he just had surgery. He's going to have to take a massive paycut wherever he goes but I can see Homer overpaying for him.

any upgrade is still an upgrade.

He has to be better than our options now of AHL goalie or KHL goalie.

I'd be ok with him if he signed for like $500k for one year, which won't happen.

I'd be ok with Emery if we cant get Vokoun

I don't know why people want Bryz. It's going to cost us $4m+ and 3 years plus to sign him. With Vokoun or Emery, it wouldnt be any higher than $3m and 2 years max, just in time for Bob to take over. Plus Bryz was awful in the playoffs

I think he's done. Several years past his prime and can't stay healthy. So naturally, yes, he will be the Flyers starting goalie next season.

I would have been alright with him a few years ago as a stop-gap, but now? Not so much.

100% agree with this. Giggy is the exact kind of goalie that Homer would sign sadly.

Absolutely not.

That likely means Homer will sign him anyways, though.

To expand the conversation to "Which over-the-hill goaltender would be best", I'd say
– Khabibulin ($3.75 mil for 2 years – would cost very little to trade for)
– Roloson (I doubt he'll make it to FA, so probably moot)
– Hedberg (always played well against Flyers, which we know is a major criterion for Holmgren)
– Osgood (UFA; probably ≤$1 mil)
– Garon (wouldn't cost much, but probably a marginal upgrade)
– Theodore (questionable, but probably better than either Boucher or Leighton)

The "no" list:
– Kiprusoff (costs too much for too long for his declining skills)
– DiPietro (costs $4.5 mil from now until forever; always injured. Duh!)
– Raycroft (cheap but probably a lateral move)
– Turco – Part II (would he be an upgrade??? I highly doubt it)
– Brodeur ($5.2 mil would be too much, even for a year, with his going-south game, and especially because Lamoriello would make Holmgren pay a king's ransom)

Others of note:
– Emery (would definitely make a play for him. Note to Paul Holmgren: it's okay to talk with doctors in the pre-season. Nobody's feelings will be hurt.)
– Biron (<$1 mil for next season, but why would Rangers want to trade with Philly unless Holmgren overpays?)
– Leclaire (will likely take a huge pay cut, but can't stay healthy)
– Niitty (signed for $2 mil through next season; probably an upgrade; how much would he cost in a trade?)

I could actually see Holmgren taking a chance on a guy like Leclaire. If he actually thought about goaltending, that is. Among the FAs, Leclaire represents one of the best chances for lightning in a bottle.
