Bryzgalov doesn't like Winnipeg

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL.../18051576.html

Quote:
GLENDALE, ARIZ. - Winnipeg isn't even back in the NHL, yet, but it already has a potential free agent problem.

Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, a soon-to-be free agent who was probably the team's most valuable player the last two seasons, says he'd rather go back to Russia than play in Winnipeg.

"You don't want to go to Winnipeg, right?" Bryzgalov said after the Coyotes lost to Detroit, Wednesday night. "Not many people live there, not many Russian people there. Plus it's cold. There's no excitement except the hockey. No park, no entertaining for the families, for the kids. It's going to be tough life for your family."

The 30-year-old Russian's knowledge of Winnipeg comes from a visit or two when he was with Cincinnati in the AHL.

"I've been there for just once, maybe twice, when I play in minors. It was really cold," Bryzgalov said. "I used the tunnels between the buildings to get to the arena. Because it was minus 40-something. Real cold."

And if he's going to put up with that, he'd rather be back home.

So if the Coyotes move to Winnipeg, Bryzgalov says chances are he wouldn't listen to a contract offer from the new owners.

"Probably not. I better go to somewhere in Russia, KHL, to be honest. Because KHL is Russian people, it's family, friends. Even as a cold place, I can speak to people in Russian language."

He was already pretty clear about his dislike for the cold:

"8 months of the year snow!"

I thought this said Winning.

I was set to agree with that statement.

Can't say I blame him. I guess if he has to freeze his ass off, might as well do it near friends, family and interesting things to do.

Good, We do not want a goalie that buckles in the playoffs. Det is a good team but he didn't give his team a chance to win. His contract is up and his performance these playoffs is gonna hurt his value big time... I hope this pre Madonna ends up in the KHL.

Right, my life has been nothing but boredom, living food stamp to food stamp. His "8 months of the year snow" comment was total bs too.

As someone who lives in (and likes living in) Winnipeg and doesn't want the Jets to come back, he can go to the KHL. I'm sure there are plenty of goalies that just want a job in the NHL and would take less than half his salary just to play. If you can't stand the weather here, you're just a panzy anyways. I've never had a day where I was too cold to go out...

Sounds like a player who wants to change teams and/or leagues, regardless of if Phoenix relocates to Winnipeg, and is just using a possible relocation as a scapegoat to save face.

Seriously.

Winnipeg people might be offended, but you can't fault a guy for how he feels. Some people just don't like certain places. He's speaking his mind, good for him. I highly doubt sentiments like this will affect Winnipeg getting a team or not.

Just ask Khabiboulin. He doesn't seem to mind the cold.

Seriously though, let the wuss go play in the sun then. It would hurt Phoenix, but oh well.

Notice how he throws up the KHL, rather than simply state "another NHL team"?

Seems like he is either set on the KHL to begin with and is using a possible relocation as a scapegoat. Or that he is merely using all of this as a negotiating ploy to leverage more money.

Anyway, it's not like people haven't been saying this openly. Winnipeg is going to have a hell of a hard time getting/keeping good players.

It would be a little funny if half the Coyotes bailed if they move, so after years of stalking a playoff caliber team Winnipeg finally gets... A lottery pick in its first year.
