My Idea

Changes
Phoniex -> Winnipeg
Florida or Atlanta -> Quebec City
Seattle (New)

Northwest
1. Vancouver
2. Seattle
3. Edmonton
4. Calgary
5. Minnesota

Southwest (was Pacific)
1. Colorado
2. Dallas
3. San Jose
4. Anaheim
5. Los Angeles

Central
1. Dallas
2. Detroit
3. Columbus
4. St. Louis
5. Nashville

Northeast
1. Quebec City
2. Ottawa
3. Boston
4. Montreal
5. Toronto

Atlantic
1. NY Rangers
2. Buffalo
3. NY Islanders
4. New Jersey
5. Pittsburgh

Southeast
1. Tampa Bay
2. Carolina
3. Atlanta/Florida
4. Washington
5. Philadelphia

Splitting up Phi/Pit was very hard, but a necessity.

Winnipeg would be fine in that format, Dallas would not.

Well, the nice thing about this format, you have one 7 team division and one 8 team division in each conference. Winnipeg can be moved to the Norris without moving Dallas out of it if need be.

Yes, but as usual whether an alignment is good for Dallas or not simply gets ignored.

Just thought i'd come in here and post this.
Makes the divisions much easier to see.

This is the only thing I can think of.

Phoenix - Winnipeg
Atlanta - Quebec

I think they should take this time to consider a REAL overhaul, and right a few wrongs that were made in the past. So, here's my thoughts on how the divisions should look by, let's day, 2015:

WEST

ATLANTIC

Boston
NYI
NYR
NJ
Washington

*Really sets up a NY/Boston rivalry, and who wouldn't love that?*

NORTHEAST

Toronto
Montreal
Quebec (from Atlanta)
Buffalo
Ottawa

*No big changes here, except adding Quebec and subtracting Boston*

CENTRAL
Detroit
Nashville
Columbus
Pitt
Philly

*Big Change. Gets Detroit out the west, continues to give NASH and CBJ the rivalry with the Wings they want, and gives TOR and the other orignal six teams more games with Detroit. This Eastern realignment also cuts down most teams travel costs by a huge margin.

WEST

SOUTHEAST

Tampa
Florida
Carolina
St. Louis
Chicago

*If Atlanta doesn't move, they go here, Chicago goes to the Central, and Detroit moves to Northeast.

PACIFIC

SJ
Anaheim
LA
Dallas
Colorado

*Only change is Colorado replaces Phoenix.

NORTHWEST

Winnipeg
Calgary
Edmonton
Vancouver
Minnesota

*Restores the 4 Western Canadian teams old rivary, and sets up a good cross border battle between Winnipeg and Minnesota, ala Toronto/Buffalo* .

All of this, of course, is predicated on current franchise relocation predictions. But I still think that even if nothing happens, Detroit shouldn't remain in the west. It just doesn't seem right, even after all these years.
Go to the MLB/NFL style alignment. 2 conferences with 3 divisions. Each conference has a East/Central/West division.

I think you forgot Chicago and also forgot your new Phoenix/Winnipeg team.

Too bad we can't just turn the clock back 20 years.

Who wouldn't love to see Chicago, Toronto, and Detroit all in the same division again?

Tampa and Florida in the West? Ridiculous.

The whole reason the league is even split into eastern and western conferences is to improve travel time.

Realistically, Phx moves to Win and ATL moves to QC. QC stays east, Win moves to west, DET moves to east.

I think this would work nicely, more Canadian teams, eliminates the three weakest franchises (no offense to fans of Florida, Atlanta, or Phoenix), and actually makes travel better for alot of teams

a few notes:
-Hamilton could be any eastern canadian city, I dont know that much about canadian cities, Im just going on population stats
-I tried to make Detroit fit in the east because I believe they have some sort of stake in the eastern conference in case of realignment, but they just dont really fit anywhere but the central, and with the southeast in existence you cant justify the central being in the east
-teams in the NE, ATL, CEN, can be swapped around, because they are so close together, but I think this is the best way.

of course all of this is speculation, because we dont really know what the league will do about this whole thing
Best one IMO

Realigning to the old 2 conferences, 4 divisions, 4 teams make the playoffs from each division and divisonal playoff champs face each other in Conference finals would be a very good idea regardless of where teams are. Interdvisional rivalries will be enhanced during the playoffs.

Put Pittsburgh in with Detroit, Nashville in with Tampa, and NYI in with Rangers.

Splitting Pitts and Philly sucks, but so does splitting NYI and NYR as do the travel costs for NYI to be in the same division as Florida for no reason.

EDIT: Like this

(panthers should also probably move to Quebec before atlanta..)

All these people moving Atlanta (8th largest US media market) to QC over Florida or just going for expansion

QC doesn't even have an arena

Quebec getting an arena is happening sooner than you think.

But they don't have it right now

And by the time Atlanta's ownership issue is rectified most likely it'll still be in construction

tl;dr thrashers =/= quebec city

I know they don't have it now. But that was one of the biggest hurdles for QC not having a team or even having a chance at a team.

In all honesty I think the Thrashers will stay in Atlanta

Clearly the league would start with the foundation, and go with a division of:

Brazil Division
Vancouver, Montreal, Florida, Anaheim and a new expansion team, Stockholm.

I'd like to see something that balances out the travel inequity when it comes to the playoffs. Teams like VAN and DET with all of the West Coast travel sure seem to get the shaft come playoff time with the game wear and tear coupled with the travel time versus the East Coast teams that more often than not, can sleep in their own bed every night if they really wanted to. That has to be an advantage for the Eastern teams as the playoffs grind on. Alas, this won't happen, but hey ... I suppose that's not a bad price to pay for the players to be able to play in the NHL.

I like this. Better than the other formats trying to cram 3 time zones in one division.
