Both Liles and Tanguay played 5 AHL games each after their seasons in the other leagues were over (NCAA and QMJHL respectively). Each then made the jump the next year in the NHL.

Ryan Malone is 24 and played i think 3 games in the AHL after his senior year was over. Had he waited until the offseason to sign his contract, he would've never played in the AHL.

Of course this is an extremely important point and one which probably strikes a nerve on "Hockey's Future" discussion boards.

I searched through a list of 1,541 recent players. Of these, here is the list of players with less than 10 games in the AHL or IHL before playing 200 NHL games and having an NHL-career points per game average less than .300:
MPRO NHL CPPGA P NAME
===================================
5 646 0.212 F Nick Fotiu
0 272 0.243 C Samuel Pahlsson
4 612 0.243 R Mathieu Dandenault
0 697 0.261 C Mike Stapleton
9 618 0.286 R Shean Donovan
0 264 0.288 L Mikko Eloranta
0 500 0.290 C Chad Kilger
Fotiu was a fighter, so I guess that paid the way. I suppose guys like Donovan and Kilger might be examples where the teams are desperate or else want to get their 1st rounders to actually succeed.

From that same list of players, here's the list of players who spent at least 82 games in the AHL/IHL and played 200 games in the NHL and have a career points/game average greater than .550:
MPRO NHL CPPGA P NAME
===================================
214 553 0.939 C Pavol Demitra
109 700 0.764 L Ray Whitney
90 608 0.758 C Petr Sykora
83 1235 0.755 R Steve Thomas
143 597 0.752 C Steve Sullivan
184 448 0.734 C Todd Elik
151 364 0.712 R Martin St. Louis
142 645 0.673 C Cory Stillman
89 266 0.654 C Ladislav Nagy
267 542 0.635 L Andrew Brunette
255 549 0.634 L Vaclav Prospal
109 223 0.628 L Gilbert Dionne
140 421 0.608 C Jan Hrdina
271 671 0.607 C Yanic Perreault
109 689 0.579 C Radek Bonk
228 276 0.576 C Todd White
136 609 0.558 C Craig Conroy
I suppose guys like Demitra and St. Louis give prospect junkies and AHL watchers the hope they need. What did Demitra ever do to deserve 214 AHL/IHL games? As a 21 year old in the AHL he scored 1.68 points per game. !! Was Ottawa insane?

Sam Salo, but he was in Europe until he was 25. Never played in the AHL though.

Great list but one big problem the orginal post asked for players who were in the age group of 25-30 and born in North America. Not even one of those guys on your list is 25 yet and the ones that are are Europeon.

According to hockeydb.com

Devereax played 21 AHL games (not 6) and Morris played 10 AHL games (not 3, although he had a conditioning stint for 3).
