He wasn't bad in this game. I, like everyone, would like it if he could place his rebounds better but the D has been helping him out all year, a couple d-men are not playing so well right now either.

Also, I just want to say that what you want from your goaltender is to make the saves when it matters most. He did that throughout the playoffs last year and hopefully he'll continue to do it going forward.

After the Smyth goal he was good, the Sharks were owned in the 3rd period and he held his ground at the end of the game and into OT. If he comes up with the wins I don't care what his stats look like at the end of the day.

If it's Nabokov you're referring to, he won plenty of first round series against lower-seeded opponents with the Sharks.

However, win or lose, Nabokov NEVER had a series over his entire career as statistically or visually bad as the one Niemi just posted.

In fact, the last Sharks starting goaltender to have a series as bad as the one Niemi did was Arturs Irbe back in that sweep against Detroit in 1995 (6-0/6-2/6-2/6-2). That was a series against a dynastic powerhouse offense hellbent on avenging their previous year's upset. This series was against an overmatched Kings team missing several of their top forwards.

Bench Marleau way before you bench Niemi.

Put Doug in goal. This is his defense.

.........................Marleau since he's not planning to contribute might as well stand still in goal.

what the heck is this thread for?

will people stop blaming Niemi for our DEFENSE'S ineptitudes?

we had a 2!!!! goal lead in the third period and flushed it right down the toilet with some real amateur rank defense.

niemi had some incredible saves, and had next to no chance on any goal scored agains him tonight except the game tying goal. setoguchi did him no help at the side of the net either.

knock off this bench niemi garbage and realize it's the defense in front of him letting him down.

niemi is one of the biggest competitors on this team and we are much worse with him off the ice.

I think most of us noticed it was. I just figured someone bumped it because of the unjustified Niemi hate going on in the GDT.

Niemi could have been better, but tonight's game was not lost by his hands. Credit the Wings where credit is due, and discredit Marleau for his lack of competitiveness.

Agreed

Nitty was suited for LA, but I feel Neimi is suited for Detroit. We just gotta stop collapsing so deep, Nemo flails around so much in net that if he gets crowded we mess up his mojo

Unjustified hate or not, I was annoyed at how big an ovation he got for that amazing first period save. He would have saved himself a lot of trouble if he hadn't kicked one out one of his trademark "fat juicy rebound straight to opposing player in the opposite faceoff cirle"s. Just sayin'.

Pretty much.

He wasn't great, but he wasn't terrible.

I have no qualms with starting Niemi in Game 6.

He wasn't bad really, he's just not good enough to consistently stop and control a shot from between the dots when the shooter has any amount of time and space. That's just who he is. And for who he is, this was not a bad game for him.

The Sharks D has to overcompensate for that by collapsing around the net, being absolutely ferocious on loose pucks and open sticks, and both clearing rebounds and taking time and space away from Red Wing players in the slot. They didn't do a great job of that tonight. As a result, several players got open looks at the net tonight (and in Game 4), and they all went upstairs on him (except for the goal off Seto).

Wings' second goal should've been goaltender interference... again... Holmstrom pushed White onto Niemi, effectively taking Niemi out of the play...

the fact that this thread is from the LA series is confusing people. There is no goalie controversy this time and really no need to keep this thread going right now.
