I just don't see how if this club wants to make moves to become a contender that Drury can still be on this roster.
Contender? You've got to give raises to Callahan, Dubinsky, Anisimov and Sauer. You've got to either retain or replace Frolov, Prospal, Fedotenko and Gilroy. There's a chance you're just cloning this year's team for next season, but at a higher price.
I believe that Drury can continue to play in the NHL, but it can't be for this team at this price, period.
People in the real world do not walk away from 5M$ guaranteed money. It just doesn't happen. That's more money than most people make in a lifetime. It's too bad, because he's such a likeable guy, and the contract has turned him into a villain. He left all he had on the ice every night. It's just too bad that all he has really doesn't add up to much anymore.

100% correct, IMO. Once you hit 30, you just don't come back from injuries to 100% anymore. That style of play takes a heck of a toll on you.
I won't fault Drury at all if he decides to come back next year. Even if it's just in a 4th line role, he may not be ready to hang up his skates just yet.
Drury has every right to play out his contract. Our GM signed it, and Drury should not be demonized because of what he makes.
With that being said, I do hope he retires. He really has no purpose on this team. With our depth, we really don't need him for anything other than the occasional faceoff. That is certainly not worth the wasted roster spot. Other than faceoffs, there is not a single thing he does that one of our younger players cannot do better. I would rather have youth playing and getting some experience than watch Chris Drury do his best impression of McCabe's skating acumen.

Therefore, I don't want him on the team, next year. I also don't really want a buyout. Retirement would be the best for cap purposes, obviously...but.. I'll take what I can get.

Looks like buyout or he's playin, I personally don't see him retiring and leaving that money on the table plus if he's referring to it as a contract year he's an playing for a few more years.

Drury staying certainly eliminates any chance of signing a power play defenseman next year, as it looks like we will have to just hope MDZ has a resurgence.

It would be very tight, but you would definitely need to move Wolski or buy him out.
Well if he's decided to go on the Rangers will need to buy him out. Spending $7 mil on your entire 4th line is way too much let alone on one 4th line player. There are other issues as well including upgrading the level of overall talent via free agency, keeping the young RFA's on board and continuing transitioning the leadership of the team to players like Callahan, Staal and Dubinsky.
I think there are at least of handful of teams out there that would give him a chance but I don't think they are going pay a lot though that would be offset by the buyout.

The cap is going to be quite high. No one can be sure of the yearly cap hit with all our RFA's, but I wouldn't expect it to surpass 15 million for next year.
If Richards signs for less than 7 per, he and Drury can fit here. It just is sort of a pain.
The Rangers will have their break up day tomorrow. Sather and Torts will meet with each player and they'll review their performance this season. Last April,they told Redden about the AHL being his destination in 10-11 if he didn't play better.
If Sather informs Drury about a possible buyout,what will Drury say?Does he want to start from scratch with another team?Move his family?Go live and play in another city while his family and business interests are entrenched in CT.

with some fancy math you can...but thats not the only move we need to make and most likely under that scenario you aren't able to fill any other holes and might even create more holes trying to find that cap space
He can still play in this league. You can do worse as a fourth line center at the NHL level. It's not as if the guy is an ECHL-caliber player at this point.
He's neither said nor done anything to lead me to believe that he no longer wants to play. If he still wants to play NHL hockey, and can still play NHL hockey, why would he retire?
And there's the issue, you've skipped a league and that's the one he belongs in. Send Drury home to CT.
