Okay... you have room for one player to reach 23 on roster and have $5.568M... why not keep Carle and still have a decent contingency?

I think people are being too optimistic about how much the cap is going to go up in coming years. The owners finally have a good TV contract. But I doubt they're eager to pass that additional revenue on to the players (which they basically would be doing if the they kept the current way of calculating the cap). My guess is owners are going to be pushing for a new equation for the cap to keep it from drastically going up.

Sorry... that was a typo that I missed and didn't even see in my last response... it should have been $1M and not $100K.

That along with the loss of the Bonus Cushion loses Carle for us... I will redo my roster with that corrected.

Thanks for catching that... and sorry for being so dense tonight. Damn, that did seem too good to be true.

Here it is without Bonus Cushion and with OD at $1M and Carle moved for pick(s)/Prospect(s). There is now a $410,568 contingency.

So I guess even the higher Cap doesn't allow us to keep the D-unit intact.

I hate seeing Carter going, but we needed that extra cap to bring in the players I wanted. In my mind we aren't going to get rid of any of our top 5 D's just because we need them in Lavy's system because someone will get hurt. And this seems like a much stronger team than last years. Last year the Flyers were way too finesse for my liking.

Maybe the smaller market owners who are struggling to reach the cap floor. The floor is another thing that could be changed. But why would big market (Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Montreal, Boston, etc.) vote to stop the cap from rising?

I'm not saying it won't happen, I don't understand NHL politics nearly enough to say that. I don't see why some owners would allow that though.

If we could get him at like 2.5 mil, I would totally go after Handzus.

Hartnell - Carter - Briere
Nodl - Handzus - Versteeg
JvR - Richards - Giroux
Powe - Betts - Holmstrom

That would be awesome.

That is a pretty sweet roster right there, but im pretty sure we are going to need a defensman or two, and quite possibly a goalie. Definetly a bold roster move though, only forwards. If a group of guys could pull it off though it would be this bunch.

2.5M for Zus might be a bit much. Maybe. I'd rather go with 2M if possible. I'm curious, he had 30 pts this season, but does he have more than that left in him?

The problem is, if we kept Shelley up with the Flyers, only traded Carle, re-signed Nodl and Powe, and signed Bryz to 5.5M per, there is pretty much no way we can get Zus.

We dont have to move Carter (who I hate) and can have a 23 man roster with almost 600k to spare.

With the Cap at 64 mil all that needs to be done is the following.

-Carle and Versteeg traded at the draft for picks, or both for one pick (like say to Florida who is 30 mil under the cap floor)

-Lappy placed on LTIR

-Leighton Waived

-Bryzgalov signed at 5.5 mil per yr cap hit

-Leino resigned at 3 mil per yr cap hit

-Powe, Nodl and Sesito resigned with a qualifying offer

-Call up Wellwood, Holmstrom, Sesito, Marshall and Gustaffson. Or Read if he isnt waiver exempt. Here is your lineup.

Leino - Briere - Hartnell
JVR - Giroux - Wellwood / Read
Nodl - Carter - Richards
Powe - Betts - Holmstrom
Shelley - Sesito

Pronger - Marshall
Coburn - Timonen
Bartulis - Meszaros
Gustafsson

Bryzgalov - Bobrovsky

With Read we have about 300k in space, with Wellwood its about 600k. I could live with this Roster, its roughly the same as last year before Worsteeg came in and we went on that free fall. I mean We lose Carle but gain a solid starter and we lose Carcillo and Zherdev who were healthy scratches much of the season. I say this will be our starting lineup unless someone breaks out at camp this summer.

For "Funsies". I heard Stamkos may be traded as TB doesn't think they can have Vinny and Stamkos eating that much cap. So:

FORWARDS
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Steven Stamkos ($7.000m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Ville Leino ($2.800m)
Daniel Carcillo ($1.125m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Andreas Nodl ($0.920m)
Jody Shelley ($1.100m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Darroll Powe ($0.800m)

DEFENSEMEN
Chris Pronger ($4.921m) / Matt Carle ($3.437m)
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m)
Andrew Alberts ($1.000m) / Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m)
Oskars Bartulis ($0.600m)

GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.250m) / Brian Boucher ($0.925m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,666,428; BONUSES: $850,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $333,572

Philly trades: Jeff Carter, Sergei Bobrovsky, Kris Versteeg, Braydon Coburn
Tampa trades: Steven Stamkos

We sign Bryz + Boucher to back him up. We re-sign Leino, Nodl, Carcillo, Powe and fill in the top 6 D with a cheap option (I took Alberts, but O'D works as well).

Again folks - this is just for fun, but as you know......Homer is one of the only GM's able/willing to make a Stamkos blockbuster trade.

From BROAD STREET HOCKEY

If they wanted the best of both worlds - keep Carle and Versteeg while replacing the big body agitator that is Hartnell, they'd have to ditch Shelley and do something like this:

FORWARDS
Raffi Torres ($1.200m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Ville Leino ($2.500m)
James van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Eric Wellwood ($0.580m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Kris Versteeg ($3.083m)
Ben Holmstrom ($0.750m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Andreas Nodl ($0.970m)
Darroll Powe ($0.850m)

DEFENSEMEN
Matt Carle ($3.437m) / Chris Pronger ($4.921m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Braydon Coburn ($3.200m)

Not good at links so just pasted my favorite scenario. There are 2 others there that require the trading of Carle and Versteeg

There aren't many players like Hartnell out there. He can fight, agitate, he is a team player, can score goals, is a good passer and plays sound defense. Hartnell shouldn't go anywhere and if he does go anywhere it will be for a huge over payment. And he is our Flyer fans entertainment too with his constant falling down. My personal favorite is him having a shootout or penalty shot (i cant remember) and he fell down and crashed into the goalie instead of shooting the puck

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,347,538; BONUSES: $1,700,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $652,462

I hate seeing Carter going, but we needed that extra cap to bring in the players I wanted. In my mind we aren't going to get rid of any of our top 5 D's just because we need them in Lavy's system because someone will get hurt. And this seems like a much stronger team than last years. Last year the Flyers were way too finesse for my liking.
Like that Roster other than one thing....Briere needs a playmaker/passer on his line (i.e. Leino, Prospal) to be really successful. Not sure Cole is that guy, although I would take him in a heartbeat. I would move Carle to keep Leino and Cole if possible., move Sestito down to the 4th line.

If the final 4 of TB, Bos, Van, SJ shows you anything....its exactly what I have been crying about since August....You need the best group of forwards to succeed these days, and that means 1) a great 3rd line (Berg/Moore/Downie, Torres/Higgin/Malhotra/Hansen, Kelly/Peverly/Ryder, etc) and a 4th line that can play almost a regular shift....that isnt happening with Shelley. On the other hand, Boston and TB got by largely with suspect defenses other than 1 or 2 guys on each.

My personal favorite is him having a shootout or penalty shot (i cant remember) and he fell down and crashed into the goalie instead of shooting the puck
Absolutely...he is the only player of his kind on this team. Unless a power forward is coming back, than he cant be moved....but then why trade a PF for a PF??
