Trade spare Sprang from Austin to Toronto for Jeff Finger. Servicable as a 6th defenseman his huge cap hit only lasts this year. If we're going to be forced to take on salary look for guys with expiring contracts on teams near the ceiling. I promise Toronto will be happy to not have to pay him. What's a decent 3rd/4th liner in the same situation. Fill out the rest of the roster with the remaining money and Dallas sucks this year but when finally under new ownership isn't tied to any terrible contracts. Heck how much does Hagman have left? If it's just this year send a spare AHL body to Calgary.

Just don't get tied down 4 years overpaying for guys like Montador. He's a decent player but I'm glad his contract isn't with us.

IMO, it'll never be like that for Anthony. I'm not sure if you are familiar with their upbringing or not but back in '03 they did a huge special on Draft Day about it (it may be kicking around on YouTube). The cliff notes version with my interpretation thrown in is basically extremely poor large black family with Anthony turning into a very good hockey player enough to selected 1st round by the Fronts. Anthony had two good years with the Fronts. Now enter Chris. He was a good football player but he decided to quit football the summer before 04/05 dropped from around 285 to around 235 and walked on with the Fronts. From the onset he had something to prove whereas Anthony seem to coast in his final year. He was driving a Navigator, 1st round pick, World Junior winner; essentially he felt he made it. I think Anthony much more so than Chris felt the need to support his family and that was a major influence on his drive. Chris always wanted to prove that he was better than Anthony or at least as good. My point of this long winded response is that Anthony will never get motivated by his brother's success, he needs to find it within himself and I think he's starting to. This guy should've been a better version than his brother. I still have hopes for him (maybe not like that) and I think he could be a great player. In this time of rebuilding I want the Stars to take chances on players like these. What's the harm really?

Precisely what I think Dallas should do. The greatest asset right now is the fact that we need to get to the floor. Other teams are looking to get rid of some bad contracts. If we can take players on 1 or 2 (at max) deals and utilize their presence and cap hit then that's exactly what Dallas should do. Who knows, maybe Dallas can gain a body and a pick for their troubles?

And I agree with not overpaying vets just for the sake of it. Especially guys who aren't going to be a major impact on Dallas this season. If Dallas needs a stop-gap go out and sign players who could be pleasantly surprised with not vets would could decline on them.

Anyone thinks GMJN should target his old teammate Olli Jokinen? he's got one year left, but has a NMC. In fact, Calgary has got a couple players they might like to get rid of, and all of them have 1 year left on their contracts. Langkow (4.5 w/ NMC), Hagman (3.0), Jokinen (3.0 w/ NMC... Seriously, Sutter?), Sarich (3.6 w/ NMC). The fact that Sarich and Jokinen have NMC is baffling. Will any of those players waive to Dallas?

God, no. But Hagman was also his teammate in Florida. Calgary clearly wants to move his salary and you know he'll at least bring effort to the lower lines, unlike Langenbrunner. Not a bad option.

According to Bob McKenzie, Fleischmann can play again as long as he stays on some medicine to help with the clotting.

If he's good to go, he might be one of the better leftovers, but I also imagine several teams would be interested in giving him a shot.

I thought from when he turned down the islanders offer that he did that not because of money/term but because they were the islanders

I think his agent said he wanted to win so I imagine you are right. I believe $5.5 was the reported Isles offer as well.

At his age I don't think he can just find it within himself, turn into a great player and now fully realize the potential he at one time had. He misused critical years in his development as a player and a person. I could see him maybe having one 30-30-60 season but never more than one and never in succession.

If he's solid defensively I wouldn't mind signing him but it would not be with the intention of putting him in the top 6 except in spot duty.

McKenzie reports Ehrhoff has agreed to terms with the Sabres.

Update: Looks like it is official. He's already on the Sabres' roster

Update 2: McKenzie tweets it is most likely 10 yrs, $40 million. Breakdown not yet disclosed.

Erhoff signs a 10 year, 40M deal. That's a great cap hit. but the term is ridiculous.

As long as there's not a NMC or something it's a good deal. $4 million cap hit, even if it's a 10 year contract makes it worth it IMO. If we could get Loui to sign one of those I'd be ecstatic.

I wouldn't give him that deal. Anything over 5 years and you're playing with fire in my opinion. Christian Ehrhoff wasn't anything until he went to Vancouver and started playing on the PP with the Sedins, we'll see how he does in Buffalo without the same support.

So he decided to do a 10-year contract with a team who could only show him details yesterday?? Is this true, or am I missing something here?

Also good point Alistar, I can remember his SJ times when we played against him numerous of times and he certainly wasn't a 4 milj.$ guy back then...

What are everyone's thoughts on possibly bringing in Erik Cole?

26 goals, 52 pts last year, would look good on the 2nd line.

Cole just fits in Carolina, I don't think he'd be a good fit for the Stars.

I for one don't find a place for Cole in our top 6 even in our CURRENT squad.. He's played with Staal for so long that Ribs would be the only guy who would get him to score 45 points and I wanna guy who can produce at least 60 playing with Ribs and Morrow..

OK it's 3 hours past midnight here in Finland and we've now lost our 90 point scorer.. Let's throw everything at Stamkos and have Richards tell him good things about Texas and see where it takes us..
