Act like me? You mean tell the truth without being ignorant? Of course you do.

Yes, let's side with a big corporation like Sony over those exercising their rights

It attracts all kinds of people, from what you would expect to be the average Internet user, right down to the most vile child pornographers. Its penchant for having child porn, snuff, animal torture and other undesirable content posted to the random section over the years is one of the main reasons it is so hated. That and the fact the collective known as "anonymous" has a knack for ruining someone's life on a whim because of something stupid they did on the Internet, or in real life.
Well, like Hobgoblin Steve, I feel very old because I'm not in the know regarding these things. I just checked out this 4chan business. Seems like a meeting point for perverts and nothing else.

So, If this is a known place where this kind of **** goes on, how is this continued to be permitted? Shouldn't authorities be using this to get at people posting this smut? How do the posters not suffer any sort of consequences?

They launched a DDoS attack against the college's website their Senior year. In response to the college President giving herself a raise, while tuition was skyrocketing. A "noble" exercise that killed email for all students for a full day.

Crap like that.

I'm not siding with Sony at all. I admitted that Sony was probably lying to demonize whoever hacked them.

Trust me, if you knew anything about me personally, you would realize I am one of the most anti-corporate people you will meet.

I'm just pointing out:

a.) whether you like it or not, your Anonymous, and 4chans Anonymous are related, and

b.) I fail to see how hacking PSN is really as altruistic as you make it sound.

Sony can go under for all I care.

The majority of the continual users of 4chan (atleast /b/) is, as much as I feel like a dick saying it, nerdy kids who don't really have much of a social life. There are other boards where people are actually able to have competent discussion but /b/, their random board, is just a cesspool of filth. There has been child pornography posted on their i'm pretty sure, but there are mods who try to keep it clean as far as I know. They can't track who posts this stuff because all users are forced to post anonymously.

In fact, the founder of the website, "Moot," was featured in an article in Time magazine.

A) if you read what I wrote, which you obviously didn't-- you'd see that I clearly stated that 4chan may have birthed Anonymous, but they share little similitude now.

B)Again, I stated that Hotz paid for the PS3...it's his item which he paid for and he has the right to do whatever he wants with it. He made a video showing the jailbreak and everyone who watched that video even if it was accidentally had a lot of their information taken by Sony.

It is a meeting place for all kinds of things, but porn is one of the heavier covered subjects.

Some people have been prosecuted from their posting, and keeping child pornography I believe, but the fact everyone is anonymous makes it difficult. The site itself has a strict no tolerance policy for illegal content, so the site cannot be taken down since it isn't responsible for the posts the members make. Basically the only way 4chan gets involved is if they are subpoenaed to give up any information they may have on a users IP or location if they were being prosecuted.

Did you hear anything about the Internet users who were badgering Scientology for awhile? That's an example of the kind of "social" terrorism they can sometimes engage in. Other than that it's a lot of stalking people's Facebook profiles and raiding Internet sites for a laugh.

Forgive my unfamiliarity with computers and the like, but what about IP addresses and all that crap? Can't they be tracked down?

That's just false though. The fact is, and you've continously ignored it, is that 4chan is still very much anonymous. Little similtude? The whole stupid Guy Fawkes theme came from 4chan. No, they don't care about who Guy Fawkes is and what he did. They took it from the character from V for Vendetta.

There IS no "anonymous group." You know members of anonymous? I do, too. There's these three *******s who always spout out stupid /b/ memes that I want to punch in the face whenever I see them. This group who hacked the PSN is very much acting under the same banner the people from 4chan do. That's an inarguable fact and yet you keep attempting to argue it.

I'm not sure. I imagine they can but the board moves so fast, dozens of posts in seconds, that often threads are deleted off the board in a matter of minutes if they're not being consistently posted in.

I agree, people should be able to unlock their items. I unlocked my iPod and my Wii. Nintendo and Apple can go screw themselves as far as I am concerned.

However, my point is, hacking PSN isn't really a noble enough cause to justify suspending the service for millions of other users who also paid for their system and have a right to enjoy that service.

I think they should up the ante a little bit and start hacking things that will make a difference positively to more people, if that's the image they envision for themselves.

Can I ask those of you that are involved with this 4chan, did you get involved because of an interest in anime/manga (as that seems to be the starting point for this thing), or did you just happen to be told about it by someone or find it looking for porn or something?

That's pretentious *******ry. I'm sure a fine upstanding human rights worker such as yourself knows of the Scientology protests that popularized using anonymous as a vehicle for this kind of ****. Guess who organized that? 4chan.

They can say what they want. It's not true.

Quote:
Anonymous doesn't want you to support them by saying "OH HELL YEAH ANONYMOUS DID THIS OR ANONYMOUS DID THAT", Anonymous wants you to be active, because the more people who are active the better your chance of making a change in this world.
That's ******** too, or they wouldn't have made their stupid photoshop letter to Sony with the ****ing Guy Fawkes mask referring to themselves as anonymous.

The fact that you're referring to me as an ignorant bigot is hilarious when I guarantee you I participate in more political activism and community service than any of these tools.

I'm not involved in 4chan. I'm just pretty internet savvy, and familiar with that meme base as a result.

I went through my /b/ phase very briefly when I was probably 14~. People talk about /b/ and you go to check it out, that's usually how it works. Most really popular internet memes used to come from /b/ which is why it became so popular.

However, there's other boards on 4chan too. I can say that the sports board there doesn't have any of the child pornography type of stuff going on. /b/ is just the cesspool.

IPs can be dynamic (always changing) or static (never changing) and the former makes it difficult to pinpoint a user, but can definitely determine the provider which they are using to connect to the Internet, narrowing it down. Proxies, which are software, or web-scripts that mask your IP with the IP of another server (in other countries, or under other service providers) also complicate things since you then have to trace the original IP through a masked IP.

Finally all of the information isn't "freely" available to the FBI, CIA, or NSA unless they are illegally monitoring traffic on said site, or they request the information through warrants or subpoenas from 4chan.

Thanks, guys. I'm just fascinated by stuff like this. I'm so not computer savvy that I feel like the internet is a waste on me. I know there is so much **** going on out there but who even knows where to go looking for it (not that this is necessarily the kind of thing I'm interested in, but you know what I mean)?

I first started looking at 4chan because a friend kept telling me to check out funny images and threads from there. Admittedly, some of them actually are really funny, depending on your sense of humor.

When you first get there, it can be addicting to the point where you spend as much time there as you would here just refreshing the front page hoping something funny or interesting comes along. Sometimes it's worth it, others not really. You have to sift through a lot of garbage, porn, disgusting stuff I won't even mention, and sometimes spam.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

When I first got out of college, I had a job where I sat in my office doing minimal amounts of work each day. As a result, I became "addicted to the internet." Just by Googling random crap, you come across some truly bizarre things out there.

Now, I don't have the time to be an internet addict. I post here a lot, and on some other sports and PC-related forums, but that's the extent of it. Most of my posting and browsing is done from my phone when I go out for smoke breaks or on the train on my way to/from work. Excluding weekends and GDTs.

Yeah, believe it or not a lot of my posting is from my phone or when i'm home at night with nothing to do. I actually DO have a healthy social life as much as my post count may try to contradict me.

Now, Steve on the other hand...

Haha, I don't think anyone initially goes there for the porn. Considering the amount of free porn out there on the web, I don't see 4chan as a major porn hub except for those who may have certain tastes that you may not often find elsewhere. Then again, you can find just about everything elsewhere anyway.

That place can be ****ed up too.

You could be viewing porn, porn, porn, and oh, there's a gif of somebody committing suicide.

You could be viewing something cute, something funny, something cute, something funny, and oh, there's a pic of a mutilated puppy.
