Here's my overly analytical look at the next series because I'm bored at work today:

Players:

Thornton: Little worried about JT, but my gut says he'll show up.

Marleau: More worried about Marleau. Hopefully he plays solid defense either way

Heatley: Not worried about him putting up points, he's consistent as hell in the playoffs, but I don't expect any clutch goals or solid defensive work from him.

Pavelski: Not worried about Pav's at all. Most reliable forward on the team. I expect a big series from him.

Clowe: Clowe really struggled against the reg wings last year. His board work was almost totally ineffective against them. It was a big reason why i was advocating moving him in the off season (that he was not good against great teams). This is his chance to get over that hump.

Seto: Very worried about Seto's play. I think he'll put up a few points, but he's been an absolute liability with the puck lately and unable to receive passes cleanly. I think the Wings might eat him alive.

Couture: Not worried, but I doubt he'll be as productive against the wings. He's still a rookie and the Wings are an excellent defensive team. I expect solid defense out of him and moderate to good offense.

Wellwood: Wellwood will continue to play like a warrior. I expect him to be the big X-factor the Wings are not prepared for. He's like a mini-datsyuk in the playoffs, and as good defensively.

Mitchell: Will continue to put up points and I suspect the Wings will struggle mightily with his line.

Eager: I think he'll have a bounceback series and really step up his agitation game. I could also see him regularly freight training Howard and getting him off his game.

Nichol: I don't think we'll see any points out of Nichol, he should focus on defense and a tenacious forecheck and he'll be fine.

Mayers: Same as Nichol. Cycle, cycle, cycle.

Boyle: I worry about Boyle this series. He'll be there effort wise as always, but his execution seems off (injury?). I would like to see him play a little more conservative and focus on his passing.

Murray: If he keeps it simple he'll be most effective. Get the puck out of the zone, clear the crease, pound the Wings every chance he can. I'm not concerned about Murray.

Vlasic: Keep playing the way he has been and he'll be a difference maker.

Demers: I forsee Demers trying to do too much and getting taken advantage of. He needs to focus on smart plays and moving the puck with confidence.

White: I think White will again be our most impactful defensemen. Hopefully he's over his injury enough to play a little more physical and really cause the Wings problems.

Wallin: Will continue to be absolutely worthless and do more harm than good out there. I expect us to lose at least one game because of him.

Niemi: Bounce-back series. My gut says he'll outplay Howard and that alone should be enough to get us the win.

Niitty: I doubt we see him in this series.

Which line will have the most points? Clowe/Couture/Pavelski
Which line will give up the most goals? Marleau/Thornton/Seto
Which will be the best defensive pairing? Vlasic-Demers
Will the power play rebound? Yes
Will the PK continue to improve? Yes, but we will still give up pp goals.

Those are my expectations. Honestly, I have no idea if we will win or not. It's going to be rough.

I actually like the matchup with Detroit even though they've had like a month and a half off or whatever.

1. After years of being owned, Thornton has owned Zetterberg the past couple seasons, including last year's playoffs.

2. The Sharks finally have a 3rd line that should give Detroit's lower D pairings fits

3. The 1-1-2 won't hurt the Sharks nearly as much on the PK against the Wing blueliners as it would against a team like Chicago or Nashville (or even LA) that has good, young, mobile defensemen that can bomb from the point.

Ahhh... Figured it was something like that.

I never thought of having the probation period be days instead of posts. Interesting. Probably a better way to do it.

Don't teams usually stay in the opposing city for at least a day before the game (mainly for those with a time difference like this)? If anything, I would think this further supports starting on Friday.

I don't think they'd leave at 6pm the day before a game.

Nominally just a day before.

Now the Sharks have tried to go to ET a "day (or more) before" to get accustomed to time change.

Might just be in the regular season. I know in the quarterfinals, Chicago/Vancouver and Detroit/Phoenix had at least a day in the opposing city before games.

Vancouver/Nash is tomorrow so there is little doubt that San Jose/Detroit will be Friday so that they can have each conference play each night.

This is going to be one hell of a series. I question the hockey IQ of anyone that thinks different. It can go either way.

The Wings are much better than last season. Bertuzzi is playing as good as he has ever played, Eaves and Helm have gotten a lot better, Cleary looks much better as well and Datsyuk is the best Center in the league.

Don't underestimate Zetterberg, either. He is an elite player who has proven to step it up in the playoffs, he will get his.

The Red Wings 3 lines definitely match the Sharks 3 lines. It is going to come down to turnovers. The Sharks really need to cut back on the turnovers. If they aren't more careful with the puck this series then the Wings will make quick work of them.

Puck control, passing, and quick decision making is key.

Really is why he has consistently been one of the best Sharks.

When he has the puck, he usually creates something and rarely turns it over. And when he does turn it over, it isn't a bonehead turnover that goes the other way.

The Sharks really need to be quick with the puck. There are really only 3 things you can do.

1. Skate. If you can't skate then you
2. Pass. If you can't pass then you
3. Dump and chase (or reset if you can).

That's really all there is to it. Detroit's forecheck is going to be nasty with Helm. San Jose needs to be ready from the get go.
