Anyone here been to the Joe?

I'm traveling the east coast and just scored a front row ticket to game 4. Any advice from anyone here would be appreciated. I'm gonna be wearing my Wusstuh jersey I got on fan appreciation night, and cheering the Sharks on of course... I just was wondering how tame/passionate/rowdy the fans are in Detroit.

Thanks!

Expect a lot of ref whining and an undeserved attitude of entitlement.

Went to the 4-1 regular season loss in 2009, and wore my old #35 Nabokov jersey. There were a few hundred other Sharks fans wearing mostly Thornton jerseys that I saw. Never used the bathroom (like that poor Montreal sucker in Boston) but that's more because they have troughs taken directly from Wrigley field or somewhere out in the 19th century. I didn't really get crap from anyone. I honestly got more insults from Chicago fans in 2002ish.

Buddy of mine went to another regular season game a few years back between Detroit and Colorado and even wore an old-ass Claude Lemieux jersey. He got yelled at and booed some, but Colorado even won in OT and no one jumped him or anything.

been there five times. expect people to talk to you, especially if the wings are winning/won. very few people will say anything to you if the sharks are ahead/have won. if you're a big enough guy, people will leave you pretty much alone, even those who have consumed a lot of courage. just be respectful, act like how you would be ok with visiting fans acting in san jose, and you'll be good.

oh yeah, and prepare to be cramped, on the concourse and in your seat.

I was there for game 4 a couple years ago. The game nabby misplayed the puck. Upper level seating is horrible. Too far from the ice. Also the fans are very sore winners. They won't taunt during the game, but if they win, you wont hear the end of it.

I would assume they might be a little grumpier this time around, since the Sharks knocked them out last year.

Well, if the Sharks win tomorrow, then according to Wings' fans, of course there will be a Game Six.

So long as the Red Wings don't win the next four games straight I'll be happy.

Badass. I'm actually gonna be on Toronto for the rest of next weekend, after the game. Where are the spots to hit to watch game 5? I assume the Detroit fanbase in Toronto is bigger than the Sharks...

Went there in 2009 for the Jackets-Wings series Game 1.

The younger fans are obnoxious as hell and have some silver spoon sense of self-smugness and entitlement and a lot of other discombobulated thoughts that all relate to being arrogant.

The older fans, who were supporting the team in the lean years, are actually pretty cool and easy to deal with.

The Joe isn't the best as far as the newer arenas, but it has charm and character, and you can't beat that in an arena. You KNOW it's Detroit's home, not stepping in feeling like you're in a palace (no Pistons puns please!) and wondering who resides there.

One final note: Do NOT walk alone when leaving the arena. That place is near the ghetto, and I sure as heck didn't feel comfortable until I was back on the Interstate and speeding as quick as I could back to the Ohio border.

Yeah, agree with the no walking alone. There are people chilling in the walkways between the arena and the parking ramp because they're above the street and therefore can't be arrested for panhandling.

if you need directions you might have to google Joe Thornton arena since he apparently owns Detroit in may.

Are the Red Wings flying back to Detroit or sailing down a river of their fans' tears?

I don't know any Red Wings or Sharks specific places, but as far as watching hockey in general goes I recommend St. Louis Bar & Grill (it's a chain, there's at least two of them in the city). Odds are if there's nothing else super big on (like UFC or a Canadian hockey team playing) they'll put whatever hockey game you want on and put the sound onto it if you ask them. And on Sundays they have a pound of wings + a pint for 12$.

I was there for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHdOfrEQ2Cg

I was in the second deck right behind the net, so I saw that goal happen right in front of me.

Its a pretty good atmosphere there though, and I had a good time. I didn't really care who won, but I was cheering for the Hawks, but then when I saw how much fun everyone else was having cheering for the Wings when a goal happened, I couldn't help but start to cheer for them instead, lol. Have fun!

I've been to the Joe many times wearing a Sharks sweater. Don't worry about it, you'll find the vast majority of Wings fans to be some of the most gracious "true hockey" fans in the NHL, returning more kindness for kindness than the average arena.

It's Dallas you want to stay away from wearing Sharks attire of any kind! They have more than their fair share of absolute Neanderthal morons who actually think, in their bone-for-brain way, that you're "insulting" them by wearing your team colors there! My sister and brother-in-law went to security, then to the police for an escort out, and were asked (NO LIE) "Well, why did you provoke them by wearing that in the first place?"

Best I'm gonna do is head to a buddy's place, eat some pizza, and cheer the hell out for our Sharks!

I grew up in Michigan going to the Joe many times before the Sharks came into existence and into my life and there was never any problems.

It is a fun place to see a hockey game although they really do need a new arena.
