If you don't see what is happening here, you haven't been into the game long enough to know.

From what I remember, this word game associated with top horses began in earnest back in 1984 when then 2 yr old champion Devils Bag, who was syndicated for a record $36 million, showed that he wasn't going to get the classic distances.
His trainer, Woody Stephens (who deserves all the credit in the world as a trainer of 5 straight Belmont victories) was a master at it.

Uncle Mo and his connections are just following a long line of top horses who didn't perform to expectations.

IMO.
They should run him in the Metropolitan Mile (Gr 1) on Memorial Day at Belmont. He'll waltz at that one turn distance, and stamp himself as a sire from that point on.
Actually, a The Factor, and Uncle Mo in the Met would be a race for the ages.

Schrupp has been in the business I believe since the mid-80s. Some of his act is a shtick, but it's not like he just walked onto the track. Opinions will always differ, it's hard to be right a lot in this business/sport. The talk I heard was that Uncle Mo didn't look so good and was closer to being scratched than not. Uncle Mo was entered in case he was ready, and he wasn't.

You have to understand.
They had to take this route in that they couldn't not enter him. That would be admitting that he had no shot.
They went this route to use what they consider a legit excuse for not running.

Look.
I can't find the quote, as it has mysteriously disappeared, but Baffert stated just yesterday he thought Uncle Mo looked fantastic. And that Uncle Mo was the horse to beat.
That comment, along with Haskin, who has no ax to grind, makes me dubious as to the reasoning given by the connections.

I hate being cynical, but I've seen this happen too many times before. Let's face it, there's a lot of money at stake when it comes to breeding rights.

If he was sick, he wouldn't have had a shot anyways. No one would have blamed them if he wasn't entered because he was sick. For all we know shipping him out to Kentucky might have made it worse.

The exacta price shown on TV was incorrect. What was shown is the win figure.

The correct price is $163.00

FWIW, two of the five New York Post handicappers have a 30-1 shot winning: Brilliant Speed.

Bettors are jumping on the Borel bandwagon: down to 7-1.

Izenberg's Profile of the race:

http://www.nj.com/horse-racing/index...e_entries.html

I didn't pick up today's Ledger but I think they'll have their big color spread in tomorrow's.

He's had some good columns this week, as always, and another of Zito earlier in the week - which are always a gem.

Interesting.
I totally dismissed Brilliant Speed for his lack of good dirt efforts.
He's bred to get it, but #2 for a deep closer means the back of the field. Tough assignment.

People won't dismiss him because of his pedigree. He's the wise guy pick though. People believe his 2 starts on dirt were too short.
