Giroux is Datsyuk-lite?

Having a conversation elsewhere about G and someone mentioned that he's something of a Datsyuk-lite right now. Agree?

Yes. With emphasis on LITE. I don't think he'll ever reach Datsyuk's level, but if he even gets close I'm a very happy camper.

Doing a bit of a comparison, Giroux has more points by this point in his career than Datsyuk had and has scored far more in the play-offs. I don't think Giroux has hit his roof yet either, not even close.

He's more physical than Datsyuk, he honestly reminds me more of a Forsberg, but Datsyuk is flattering to him.

He's a very poor man's Datsyuk, homeless even, but that's still an amazing thing.

This reminds me of a story I heard about something that happened in the 50's.

The Japanese were working on building a new car that they would use to take on the world. They were worried about branding and felt that the Germans had the best car marketers in the world, witness the success of Volkswagon, BMW, Mercedes, etc...

So they hired a German marketing firm. The Germans came to Japan to talk about ideas. The Germans told the Japanese that the most important thing in launching a new car brand was to come up with a great name. They kicked around a lot of different names but none of them seemed to make sense to the Japanese.

The leader of the Japanese expressed his disappointment to the Germans telling them that they really had hoped to launch the new car line in the next 30 days.

The German replied "Dat Soon?"

I haven't told that story for years but I just couldn't help myself.

Sorry. Go Flyers!

As a matter of fact, Datsyuk is Giroux-esque.

I'm still not sure Datsyuk is from planet Earth.

He combines the qualities of Datsyuk and Forsberg IMO.

He has not reached their respective levels yet obviously, but he is 23 years old and still has a lot of potential.

As said before, if he comes somewhere near them the Flyers fans will be very happy.

Roo has a fair way to go to be compared to Richards in his 2-way play, never mind Datsyuk.

Offensively comparable? Maybe one day.

giroux has developed the ability to single-handedly dominating multiple shifts in a row. it's scary what he can do when he's "on". we're starting to see the same out of jvr too. i'm very happy with our young forward core of jvr, giroux, richards, and carter.

Definitely would compare him to Foppa before Datsyuk, but if they're even mentioned in the same sentence, that is something to be lauded.

I'd also compare him to Forsberg before I did Datsyuk. I'm of the opinion that Dats is from another planet.

I swear half the threads here are by trolls or people that don't understand hockey. Do you guys realize how good Datsyuk is defensively and how average G is? He's better than last year but he's not even in Richards' league defensively. Datsyuk is brilliant defensively and almost as good on offense.

I actually thought it was a joke when I first read the thread title.

Maybe if Giroux is like bud light and datsyuk is like a guiness in terms of beer than the comparison could be close....

I thought it was agreed upon a long time ago that Giroux is Foppa-lite

Bud Light? That's a terrible insult to Claude.

Hard to compare stats directly here, on one hand Datsyuk was 3 years older, and much more physically mature when he reached the NHL, on the other hand he made his bones in the pre-lockout NHL. Also, Datsyuk was a excellent defender from day one, and has continued to improve into the benchmark for Selke candidacy. Giroux has improved during his time in the league, but I don't ever see him reaching that level.

I agree more with the people who call him Foppa-lite. He needs to put on some size and become more of a threat to shot to match Forsberg's offense, but he is an above average-very good defender, a very good skater who isn't the biggest but brings an under-rated edge to his game and is absolutely electric with the puck on his stick. If he hits the top end of his potential I could see this being a legitimate comparison.

Yeah, Ive thought of the Forsberg comparison too. I dont want to call Giroux a midget, because he is my height and weight, but He's Forsberg trapped in a smaller body.

I can see that comparison, both have incredible puck skills and vision, both guys skate hard and compete on defense.

I don't think Giroux is ever going to be quite the wizard Datsyuk is but who the hell is? He's a fearless player with a complete game and so many things you cannot teach, that's close enough for me.

Mini-Forsberg is a recurring comparison with Giroux, that might be a little more apt but again it sets a guy up for failure no matter how good he is when he's compared with guys like that IMO.
