I have a feeling that the caps will pull this one out, usually when a home team comes back to their place after many road games, they crash and burn.
4-1

regardless. a reputation will have been firmly established. there was hope here that the ovechkin caps would dismiss the previous caps history from langway to kolzig of the playoff choke. they stand at the entrance of becoming at least as great the choker as the langway teams if not the greatest in team history.

every season that goes by the weight ovechkin carries becomes heavier and the effort required to shoulder it greater. this past regular season, i believe we saw the result of that weight and we continue to see it in backstrom's results.

it saps the joy out of the game. ovechkin was all joy.

personally, i think if they lose here that bad things are coming.

i feel better about them winning this series than i do about the future if they lose it.
I won't blame this choke on the players at all. They're playing the system their coach wants them to play. The execution or rather a lack of execution of the system is on the coaches. How do you take a well oiled offense and COMPLETELY neuter it, I just do not understand. Even if the focus is on defense, this lack of an actual offensive system should be blamed on something else. Give this group of guys someone that kicks their ass and motivates them to play well for the entire 60 minutes, and I will show you a Stanley Cup winner.

Yeah, not really.

Either they'll play with determination and urgency or they won't. If they at least do that consistently they can have pride in their game, win or lose.

These two teams are fairly evenly matched on paper. The big advantage (again, on paper) is one Mike Green and he just has not proven to be a difference maker in the clutch, particularly on the PP.

That is completely counterintuitive. You can blame the players being given a bad system, but the execution or lack thereof of a system is completely dependent on the players. A coach puts in a system he thinks is capable of winning in the playoffs. One can argue if the system he implemented is good enough or if it plays to the strengths and weaknesses of the team, but at some point it is up to the players themselves. I think we saw earlier in the year that the system works well if everyone is buying in, but if your #1 center is playing like a #3 center and other guys aren't giving max effort and pulling their weight, just about any system is bound to fail.

^^^
How do a bunch of players go from executing an offensive system flawlessly to looking absolutely inept doing it?

Could it be that the new system is flawed then? Are the coaches using a system that works to the strength of the players? Are they trying to fit a square peg in a round hole?

I'm doing the same. I didn't even post since the last game because I was so angry at how terrible Mike Green was.

I can't watch.

If a coach merely devises systems then the notion of individual development rests entirely on the individual player. That's something I just can't agree with. There's more to coaching than X's & O's.

I, too, am not enjoying this particular version of Groundhog Day/year. I think it was more fun when they were legitimate underdogs.
