I have no issues with Myers. But from a payday perspective, he may opt for a shorter contract after this season IF he doesn't get the opportunity or minutes to emerge as an elite defenseman. If he doesn't mesh with Regehr, he could end up with Sekera, and Leopold could end up the top pairing with Regehr. Then what? Your new guy with a 10 year contract plays 3rd pairing minutes with Weber?

Now he's got other guys that can eat minutes.

I guess I think higher of Myers and have more confidence in him....Not only do I think he is a #1 d-man now....but will continue to be a #1 d-man, and highly likely a Norris Trophy candidate.

but my point is that I don't think he would sign that sort of back loaded deal because of the risk of a salary rollback or other miscellaneous uncertainty in the next CBA. If I am Myers and Myers agent, I might want a short term deal at a more moderate salary, with the assurance that Pegula will take care of him after 2012, than sign a deal now for the long term that might not be worth the full value after 2012.

I'm not sure that there will be CBA issues, or a salary rollback, but the mere risk of one should be enough to put a short term end to young kids signing 12 year contracts.

or not. I wouldn't be surprised to see a short term 3 year deal.

I wouldnt stop any short on saying Myers is going to eat more minutes on D than anyone regardless of pairing. He will get the PP time, PK, and 5 on 3 PK time.

Theres NO way he doesn't get the opportunity. He averaged 22:30 last year. He'll probly average 24ish this year.

Put it this way, if Myers is with Weber that IS your first pairing. I dont care who Regehr is with.

I don't care what he costs, I want him locked up for as long as I live! I will cry the day Tyler Myers is no longer a Sabre, unless he dramatically declines into abscurity.

Nor would any 21-year old defenseman, with a coach who trusts and sticks with him through thick and thin; a billionaire owner that advocates loyalty and respect of his players; and the chance to play alongside his childhood hero, pass up the chance to sign-up long-term with his current team. I have a feeling that Myers will gladly take as long a term as the Sabres are willing to offer and not have a shred of doubt doing so.....

It wouldn't surprise me in the least that Pegula, Black, Regier and Ruff are all in consensus with that very same intention.

Tyler Myers is my second favorite Sabres behind Miller I never want either of those two to leave. so here is my offer is Myers

10 yrs @ 57 million above Byfuglien's deal and possibly a little behind Weber & Doughty's deals.

I'd copy Duncan Keith's deal and see if he takes that.

http://capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=252

LENGTH: 13 YEAR(S) VALUE: $72,000,000 CAP HIT $5,538,462

I'd like to keep his yearly cap hit under 5, but it looks like most of you think it will be over 5. If that's what it takes ... So be it. But would most of you do a long term (over 7 years) yearly cap hit of 6+?

Keith was coming off a Norris Trophy winning season when he signed that deal. I'd offer a little less to get the cap hit down to $5 million. Good idea though. Sign him up as long as possible.

My guess is that Myers' agent could look at what Doughty and Weber get this summer and try and use that as a benchmark for a Myers deal.

I would try and push the Keith contract since it could be better for the team than the deals that will be given out this summer.

Personally, I'll be disappointed if Myers isn't under contract longer than Ehrhoff is when Myers gets his next deal.

Whatever he wants, for however long he wants. That's loyalty, and Myers should retire a Sabre.

I'm failing to see the connection between Myers as a player an his placement on a pairing in the top 4 as it relates to a contract. You pay him because he's elitely talented and young. Regehr and Leopold aren't here forever. Myers can and should be.

What I'm saying is that you pay him what he wants because of what he has already done and what he can do down the road. Foolish to think we'd waste money on Myers just because 2 other dmen play 1 more minute per game than him (cTm) for 2 years

I think if the Sabres give him 10 + years he will sign for less that 5 million per season

10 years/48 million

To get more 5 million or more, he will need to have an incredible final year. Something in the neighborhood of 50-60 points along with being a shut down guy.

Ehrhoff had 50 points last season and only got 4 million as a UFA! What makes you guys think a RFA that has had problems in his own end and with giveaways is going to get 5+ million a season?

Boatload of potential, but until he puts it all together, he isn't getting that insane of a contract. The guy is NOT a generational talent.

Ehrhoff is also average defensively.

At this moment in time, so is Myers.

Also, UFA's get paid WAY more than RFA's. Especially RFA's just coming off their ELC.

I'm as high on Myers as the next guy, but there are plenty of holes in his game. He is still on the outside of the top 20 D men in the league, looking in. Guys outside of the top 20, especially RFA's, don't make 5 million a season. It is as simple as that.

The potential of signing Tyler Myers to a new contract:
“We’ll touch base with them at some point in the next month. It’s something we’d like to have conversations about. I don’t think we’re at the point where we feel like we have to get it done; I think it has to work for both sides.”
