If anyone doesn't think GMGM drafted well, pick a couple other GMs and compare over the last 10 years. Most GMs don't even hit on many of their first rounders.
IMO GMGM stays. Been drafting well and has been pretty decent at the trade deadline.
No doubt you are correct (altho the Corvo, Belanger, Walker year could be disputed in terms of trade deadline).
But..you have to ask...is the "whole" of the team equal to or greater than the "sum of the parts"? I think most would say NO. They have seriously underachieved here and for the most part under GMGMs watch.
Now is it the players? If so GMGM assembled them. Is it the coach(es)? If so GMGM hired them.
And this year they didn't just underachieve...they found a way to top the horrendous departure they had last year...and that was hard to do. The WAY they went out against Tampa is simply embarrassing.
Ted has got to ask himself if he wants to keep GMGM does he trust him the bring in the "right" players/coaches to win when it matters most? His track record in that regard isn't promising.

Well you know Ted isn't going to can GMGM, heh. Just not in the cards .
The BB question though does relate to GMGM in the sense the longer he sticks with him as the coach his fate could potentially be tied closer to BB's.

can you find another GM, not with the surname sather, that's been with the same team for at least 10 years with a "worse" track record than mcphee in terms of the team's on ice performance?
that'd be starting with at least the 2000/2001 season -
1 and done 4 times - 1 time as president's trophy winner.
no playoffs 4 times
out in the 2nd 2 times - 1 time swept as the eastern conference top seed
They're an immature group that lacks an identity. That's a full on organizational problem. They can't take this offseason lightly. The direction of the franchise needs to be reevaluated.
McPhee is at the center of the Capitals losing culture. He's not the guy that wins Cups. It's screaming at you in your face that he's not the guy.
He is not the guy that wins them.... even of you win them. You act as if the GM is out taking face offs. The record clearly shows that McPhee has assembled a quality team.
He has done his job. The team has to mature a little, physically and mentally, they'll be fine.
Seemed like in this series Tampa just jumped on every mistake. Everytime a rebound was bouncing around, either MN was way out of position (for whatever reason) or nobody was clearing people out.

Groan.
Hey new guy, we've heard that for 3 years.
A team doesn't "just jump on every mistake". The Caps were outworked by an inferior opponent according to their owner. It stems from somewhere. Their leadership.

Yeah after this debacle there can be no question of this. Ted has to critically look at blowing out the management in its entirety and bring a new culture on board. That will certainly get the player's attention.
Alot of potential GMs would drool over the chance of coming on board to see what they can do so there would be no shortage of interest to bring in someone.
The formula isn't working for whatever reason and its not just the players. Failure starts at the top.

I am not a huge mcphee fan, but David Poile hasn't really done anything in Nashville for the last 10 years either

The Rangers and Caps spend to the cap. Nashville does not. That is an uphill battle for them plus the fact that they play in the Western conference so they constantly play Detroits and Chicagos etc.
"“Someone said he's not a good playoff coach,” McPhee added. “There's no difference between a playoff coach and regular season coach. Either you're a good coach or you're not. He's a good coach.”"

??
Poile has his faults, we've all lived through them.
but he was given the task of building an NHL team from the ground up, this wasnt a quebec to colorado franchise he took over. that's a whole different animal.
his teams have made the post season exactly the same amount of times mcphee's have since 2001.
his team is also currently still playing in the second round, taking 1 from the mighty canucks, and as such has gotten further than the caps this year.
he also doesnt have one of the most dynamic and explosive players in the game, ovechkin, on the roster.
the only thing mcphee currently has on poile is getting to the second round one additional time.

Well it seems like GMGM and BB will be back based on these comments (I only read the initial ones on CI).
Oh well...what can you do? Quit being a fan? No..just moan and groan and expect the status quo.
We just have to accept that we are Caps fans and this is what we can expect forever. Owner? Doesn't matter. GM? Doesn't matter. Coach? Doesn't matter. Hall of fame players (Stevens, Langway, Murphy, Ovechkin)? Doesn't matter.
Just seems the Caps are cursed. So why not keep BB I guess? It will make things interesting and give us something/someone to focus our anger at next year.
I have to admit I'm afraid of a new GM/Coach..what if we do that and we go out in even grander fashion next year??? Frightening thought indeed!
How many are they really going to get or have a shot to get interest in?
I think GMGM is respected by his peers as an above average GM, and he does a pretty decent job. obviously, the heat is still on him, but for better or worse, he's going to get more rope.
He took this team, tore it apart, and rebuilt it to a team with talent. Whether or not that talent wins, it's really not about the GM. Shero's crashed out twice in a row, and you don't see him getting called for the axe. Sather's been a bum for years now, and we don't see him getting crucified.
It's a stupid debate with no real end or cause. He's a good enough GM, who probably needs a new coach or a bit of a roster change.
Remind everyone that no matter how well they do in the regular season the first sign of a decent defensive strategy this team will implode.
Then bet heavily against the caps in the playoffs (unless its the woefully untalented rangers). Someone out there is stupid enough to believe that this is the caps year and i will take their money appropriately

I dont think people are saying he does not draft well. Or get good value with his trades. The point is he refuses to make the big change that is needed. The team has had the same problems for the past few season. BB took the team as far as he can. Its time for a change.
He has one card to play. And thats it.
It used to have the fast break card. As soon as we ran into a well coached team. He had nothing else
Now he has a defensive card. And as soon as we hit a well coached team. He again had nothing.
And we take the same undisciplined penalties.
The team has the most talent in the league and the lowest hockey IQ.
I have been a big fan of McPhee. His comments today regarding Boudreau are extremely troubling. I hope the decision to fire Boudreau is made from above him, but his view of the current situation will remain disturbing as the team tries to find a new coach. I don't know if I can say I want him gone, but it's a very disturbing response from him.
