Hawks Roster Next Year II

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Jeremey Morin ($0.916m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Kane ($6.300m)
Kris Versteeg ($3.083m) / Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Bryan Bickell ($0.541m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Michael Frolik ($1.600m)
Ben Smith ($0.812m) / Jeff Halpern ($0.825m) / Troy Brouwer ($1.300m)

DEFENSEMEN
Brian Campbell ($7.142m) / Brent Seabrook ($5.800m)
Duncan Keith ($5.538m) / Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m)
Nick Leddy ($1.116m) / Paul Mara ($0.775m)
Brent Sopel ($0.700m)

GOALTENDERS
Corey Crawford ($2.000m) / Alexander Salak ($0.850m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $62,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,652,169; BONUSES: $680,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $547,831

1-Reacquire Versteeg (From all indications he has bombed in Philly and with there cap issues he is likely out door)

2- Sign Jeff Halpern to be our #4 C
3- Sign Paul Mara and Brent Sopel as cheap vet options at #6/7
4- Resign our RFA's (Brouwer at 1.3 mil , Frolik 1.6 mil , Crawford at 2 mil). If Brouwer wants more then 1.3 then move on and sign someone like Asham or Rupp for our 4th line
5- Bring over Salak to be our #2
6- Morin starts out with big club next year (Also maybe Makarov as cheap 13th forward)

Steeger has proven he can play for Hawks and the price could be very low with Leino a UFA / Flyers need to address goaltending positions

I like that LW depth a lot better then what we had this year

Really BWC? Why get another soft perimeter player? If we're gonna trade assets to get a $3 mil Versteeg, we might as well try to poach Ladd back. The extra $ would be worth it because Ladd's exactly what this team needs.

Ladd is gonna get 4 mil or maybe more from Thrashers (He is there captain and there #1 offseason priority) and poaching Ladd would be costly. Given the Flyers situation they might have to go Bowman route and not get good value back for Steeger.

Steeger isn't as soft as you claim and did go to net on occasion as a Hawk. Is he ideal solution for LW? Nope but if we could reacquire him at affordable rate it allows us to keep Sharp at C which we need as we lack C depth.

+ I would say Steeger was one of those guys who's lockeroom presence goes beyond normal meaning

Hawks lost alot of heart and soul last summer and it was evident all year. Guys like Burish/Versteeg/Madden/Sopel all played a big role in the chemistry and makeup of our team

All I am saying is if Flyers want to get rid of him bad enough and we can afford him we should consider it

Atlanta isn't about to let Ladd go, Philly certainly would let Steeger walk away.

I'm not saying it's likely but if we could afford Steeger, we probably could have him back.

Now that I think about it, I actually like this lineup quite a bit. I'd like Kruger instead of Brouwer and I'd like to slot Johnson in somewhere as a backup center. That should be about cap-neutral, I'd think.

It's almost scary how often I post almost the exact same thing as BWC at almost the exact same time.

Gagne has had too many concussons ,, Far too risky and he seems happy in TB and will likely resign there

He certainly went to the net once in a while, but I think that 3 mill could be spent on beefing up the bottom 6, giving us space to sign Sharp after the year, or going after a vet willing to take a paycut like Gagne.

I think he'd be worth the risk on a one year deal. Just throwing out ideas. Maybe Andrew Brunette?

Steeger is only signed thru next year so he wouldn't interfere with signing Sharp longterm.

And really I think Bickell-Bolland-Frolik showed alot of potential as our 3rd line and already makes me very confident we will be much stronger next year (Along with Smith's play)

Just some more tweaks to 4th line , Improvement in top 6 LW spot to allow us to keep Sharp at C and a vet dman or two is all we really need

Here is the problem though

Why would Gagne uproot everything and leave TB a city and team he seems to enjoy that is now in Eastern Conference Finals (Hell he could win cup this year) to go to Chicago for 1 year

Well he's only been there a year. And I totally forgot that TB is in the Conference Finals.

I don't think we'd trade for Steeger just to see him leave after one year. We'd probably end up re-signing him at a similar salary he's at now, although I'm not good on contracts. Idk what we could do but I'd love to see Sharp at LW for a whole year instead of throwing him back at C.

Steeger has looked good playing with Richards and Zherdev/Giroux/whoever they throw him with. I bet he could be had for one of our second rounders.

I also second Morin being on the opening day roster next year. The kid looked like he belonged in the few games he spent here. That, and Rockford is no place for a forward to develop their offensive game.

Well it would depend on our cap and if Hawks desired him back

If Flyers are trying to move him and the price isn't bad and we can afford I say it is worth shot

Flyers are happy to get rid of cap hit and go after a #1 goalie

Hawks are happy to get a talented player back from our Cup

Hawks fans are happy and Flyer fans are happy

Still very unlikely ,, But I wouldn't be opposed to it happening

In regards to the discussion about getting versteeg back, how often does something like that happen? I can't recall many instances of a player being traded and then coming back.

Have you been watching the Philly-Boston series? Versteeg is a turnover machine and has 0 goals in the playoffs. He plays soft and he is overpaid by at least $1.5 M. Don't be surprised if Philly shops him after this year but his salary will make it difficult to do so.

Versteeg was a good team guy

Versteeg is a 50 Point Winger

Versteeg is great for a 3rd Line

Versteeg > Brouwer, Stalberg, Bickell and all that other Crap not named Sharp, Kane, Toews, Hossa, Bolland and Frolik

Versteeg and Philly isn't a good fit and I never thought that this will work out for them. I had hopes for him in TO and I think the team he will go to will get a good Player. I think he goes to ATL

I like that LW depth a lot better then what we had this year
Definitely a better team than we had last year. Seems like we're going to have to go for a trade (like you suggested) to get a top 6 left wing. We seem to have a deep system and a lot of picks, there has to be someone out there for Bowman to get. If no trade can be swung, I'd like them to sign Reasnor to be our 3rd line center and then use the rest of that money to sign a good 4th line center. That allows Bolland to be the 2nd line center and Sharp to stay on the wing.

Actually, I thought Philly was an ideal fit for Versteeg. Philly already has plenty of gritty forwards, so in theory it is the ideal spot for a player like he. Assuming he stays, he may need a full year there to get the chemistry working but at this time Hawks need grit at a decent price not more overpaid finesse players.
