I have visions of Dale Tallon hovering around looking to pluck one of our prospects. I'll bet he has his eye on Beach, possibly Morin.

Beach = Sure

Morin = Unlikely

Tallon passed up Morin in 09 draft and clearly wasn't as high on him as Bowman

FORWARDS
Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Kane ($6.300m)

SALARY CAP: $62,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,214,670; BONUSES: $545,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $785,330

-Assuming no trades of key pieces.
- I'm probably higher on Kopecky than most. I think he's a very good bottom 6 player and better suited for that role than a guy like Brouwer is. That $1.6-1.7M range is the highest I would go for Kopecky, if he wants more, then use the money elsewhere. I can also see an argument for keeping Brouwer over Kopecky if Brouwer wants $1.2M and Kopecky wants $2M. Also, if you can get a guy like Glencross or Ward for $2M or so or have Kopecky at $1.6M, it's adios Tomas.
-That bottom 6 is a lot better than what the Hawks had this year. It addresses a number of the needs regarding more grit and physicality, improving the team in the faceoff circle and killing penalties.
- It would be nice to have a little bit more offensive punch on the third line, but I went with addressing the need to get more physical and gritty instead.
- Morin doesn't make the team out of camp, but him and Kruger start down in Rockford to get max ice-time and to help with their development. If either is ready in the middle of the year, they can get called up then.

Like this roster a lot but you are probably too high on Kopecky. He made what, $1 mil this past season? Don't think he was productive enough to get a 50% raise.

Kopecky made $1.2M, and 300-400K raise is what I would give him max...if he wants more than that, it's tough to rationalize keeping him.

Versteeg isn't what this team needs. He works best and is at his most dangerous while carrying the puck. He's the third wheel on either of our top two lines.

Brunette would be great. Knuble would've been better had he not re-upped in Washington.

Santorelli is the guy to get out of Florida. Once he joins a legit NHL squad, he'll blow up and become a hugely popular talent.

Trade Brouwer plus one of Dale's depth prospects or two he likes for Santorelli. If Konopka wants much more/longer term, bring back Johnson. If you switch Johnson with Konopka, turn Dowell into a guy like Asham with the money saved.

all these are true...but no way is Versteeg worth Brouwer, Bickell and Stalberg's salary COMBINED...which is about what he's making.

Also Bickell IMO still has the potential to have much more upside than Versteeg (if he continues to play at his size which it seemed like he was in the play offs). I want Bickell back...he is EXACTLY what we need (assuming once again he plays according to his size).

Remember, team needs are:
1) #2/3 C
2) big/physical #5/6D
3) gritty, physical bottom 6 forward (or two)
budget ~$4.5M

Trading assets for a guy that does not fill any of those needs and eats up most of the available cap space @ $3m seems like huge mis-management.

And why this fascination with ex-hawks. That team is gone, make your peace and move on. I'll help:
Ladd will make way too much and is not available, Buff too and he's a D now, Versteeg makes too much for what he does and only a minor upgrade, Sopel is on his last legs and mostly sucks, Eager would be fine but so would like a bunch of other guys other guys that don't commit bad penalties, Madden's age is showing and he isn't needed anymore, Burrish is a nothing... did I miss anyone?

After recuperating from the wrist surgery, Bickell should teach Stahlberg how to use those wooden hands of his. With that monstrous speed combined with above average hands (one can wish) i would bring him back come decision time. But its a long shot and im teetering on a verge of whether or not hes fit to wear the indianhead next year. Dunno, dunno..

Ben Eager would be more than welcome back to Chicago.

Not sure what Ladd would get from Atlanta, but I think offer sheeting him at 5YRs/20M is a good hockey deal. If they match, oh well, we tried.

Ladd is by far my favorite ex Hawk and the only departure I mourned after the SC victory. That being said, the position Chicago needs filled could be done for anywhere from 1-2 million dollar a year less than what you are suggesting for Ladd.

He is Atlanta's Captain. I wish him well but it would be foolish to go after him given our Cap situation. We have to accept that not every talented player that plays here will be able to stay here at least for next several years (until some of the over inflated contracts are off the books).

Steeger addresses our need in top 6 LW slot

If Sharp plays LW our C depth goes to hell ,, If Sharp plays C our LW depth goes to hell

We have to acquire either a 2nd line C or top 6 LW IMO this offseason. Acquiring a 3rd line C doesn't make sense IMO as Bickell-Bolland-Frolik would be good going forward as our 3rd line and would allow us to have the depth within our team to succeed. If we move Bolland and say Bickell to top 6 roles we again will have very little in our bottom 6

No doubt Steeger would be good to have on and off the ice, but I don't think we could handle him at his price tag.

No to Versteeg.

I would rather them use 3mil to sign a guy like Jussi Jokinen, or on a couple players like Chad Larose and Marcel Goc.

Versteeg does nothing for us. We need a C so Sharp can play LW w/ TK.

3mil can be spent more wisely, he is the player we miss the least out of the $2mil + players we gave up.

Problem is Jokinen as FA will get more then 3 mil and will want longterm

Steeger's deal expires after next year thus doesn't hurt us longterm financially

Versteeg is > Most of our LW options so to say he does nothing is wrong

Acquiring Versteeg matters on a lot of things. Are the Hawks able to get good deals on the guys they bring back (Craw, Frolik, etc) to free up a few extra 100K? Were they not able to get a 2C? Did the cap go up to $63M instead of $62M givnig the Hawks another million to use?

As of right now I would say no to Versteeg, but depending on what Stan is able to do elsewhere, he is an option to consider..again depending on a number of variables.

do you think Sullivan would accept a 2 million Deal to come back to us?

Leino would be great for 2.5 or less

When will we hear something about Contract negotiations?

Sullivan is gonna be 37 years old and cant stay healthy. He will resign with Preds or retire

Leino is coming off a 50+ pt season and is gonna be a UFA in weak market. He is getting 3-4 mil easily as FA

Here's a couple lineups looking at potential lineups where there Hawks could bring back Versteeg (nice deals from Frolik/Craw...cap is at $62.5M instead of $62M) or acquiring a 2nd line C for around $3M (I just used Weiss..not knowing how much he would cost in terms of giving up assets to get him)

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Kane ($6.300m)
Michael Frolik ($1.400m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Kris Versteeg ($3.083m) / Marty Reasoner ($1.500m) / Ben Smith ($0.812m)
Bryan Bickell ($0.541m) / Ryan Johnson ($0.525m) / Arron Asham ($0.850m)

DEFENSEMEN
Duncan Keith ($5.538m) / Brent Seabrook ($5.800m)
Brian Campbell ($7.142m) / Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m)
Nick Leddy ($1.116m) / 6th DMan($1.500m)
John Scott ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS
Corey Crawford ($1.900m) / Backup G ($0.750m)

SALARY CAP: $62,500,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,623,003; BONUSES: $545,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $876,997

Still need to add a 13F there for cheap.

With a 2C for $3M..same variables as above.

I'd prefer more than $260K in cap space for call-ups injuries..but maybe the Cap is a little higher than $62.5M

Without knowing the exact cap number it's tough to completely project, but those are just a couple more possible lineups.
