The guy played 54 games this season and his back is in pretty rough shape. Let's see how he actually fairs this upcoming season before claiming there is "no chance".

Spezza.

He's finally turned the corner, and has become a reliable two-way player.
Seeing him play with the kids the 2nd half of the season has shown how much of a leader he could be. Very impressed by his play.

The only person i can see them giving it to immediately is phillips.

if they decide to go "no captain" for a season or so, spezza would be next in line after that period.

Didn't Alfy come out and say the next captain should be Spez?

No question that it will be Spezza.

I hope it looks like this 4 years down the road.

C- Jason Spezza
A- Erik Karlsson
A- Chris Neil
(and if we rock the 3 A's hahah)
A- Jared Cowen

I don't know about handing spez the C just like that. I think he's growing into the position right now but not too long ago he was crying at Murray about people booing him.

What I feel though is that it's a damn shame that Anderson is a goalie. His communication is top notch and everybody on the team respects him. His character is captain material IMO.

Anderson as a captain would actually be pretty cool, as he does seem to have a lot of character. I loved watching him talking to the team during breaks and timeouts; however, assuming (huge assumption, I know) that Lehner manages to eventually hunt him down before the end of his contract, he sort of has a best before date. Plus he's a goalie and all that.

I feel like Spezza deserves a bit of a break in regards to the booing thing. The guy's constantly scapegoated by the media and the fans, and it's unlikely we would have found out about his unhappiness with the booing if Murray didn't have such a huge mouth. I feel like he's next in line; as far as I'm concerned, the fact that Alfie came out and said Spezza should get the C next only cements that in my mind.

I just think that following alfie as captain is a lot of pressure to put on spezza in 2012 or 2013, but we'll see how he handles the media and everything this year in his first year as a permanent alternate. Philly will be able to step in for a year or two without any problems.

I think it's pretty clear with the moves we made that a shift is happening in the culture of the team. Spezza will get the C and Karlsson or Cowen will get an A when Phillips retires with Neil/Michalek/Gonchar depending on who's around and playing well.

don't be so sure. there is definitely a chance that alfie might not come back. chronic back problems for a 38-year old player that have nerve/strength complications isn't something to sneeze at. and there is almost no way that alfie is coming back the year AFTER this one coming up for $1mil.

this will be alfie's swan song, IF he's able to come back.

Karlsson is not ready for an A next season, but the one after that? Maybe. I'm not sure how much of a leader he is in the dressing room, but the kid oozes confidence and I suspect is as close to a natural born leader as someone like Mike Richards or Gabriel Landeskog.

Spezza, in my view, is a much better choice than Phillips because ultimately it is Spezza's team. He should be the one charged to lead it.

The next captain of the Sens absolutely 100% has to be Jason Spezza. He's already being groomed as the future leader and go to guy of this team. He has embraced the leadership role and really evolved and matured as a player with the A on his chest. If Alfie has got one or two more years left in him, that's the perfect amount of time for Spezz to do his thing and take this team to new heights in a few years time.

We can hope Alfie is back next year but I'm not sure that even if he is that he will play the year after that.

I can see Michalek getting an 'A'. Him and Neil are next in line IMO.

Ummm remember Roberto Luongo as captain? There would be too much distractions. Imagine your captain getting pulled in the game and sitting on the bench, how much leadership can he provide when that happens. Yea not a good idea.

We have had Craig Anderson for not even a full season, and now you want to make him Captain? Dumbest thing I have read this week. Spezza has earned his captaincy. I mean, this season we went 1-14 or something like that without him. We are worse than the Edmonton Oilers when Spezza is out.

Its like making phaneuf captain or something...

I honestly say Spezza will be next captain, with phillips and neil as the A's. Then Karlsson will be an A in a few years.

Why Karlsson? I love the guy, but the captains of the team should actually be leaders. He needs to be on the for a long time before earning the A. The leaders of this team are vets, who will lead the young guns to glory. A young gun leading other young guns is a bit odd, aint it?

It can work sometimes, but only with the Crosbys and such. Karlsson isn't a Crosby
