Dark Souls

Now with some content..

360 and PS3 release date moved up from "Holiday 2011" to September JP; October NA/EU.

Preorders get a free illustrated guide, soundtrack, art book and "making of" movies.

Sounds like they threw out the "port to level" system and made it an open world where you can go wherever you want, with the end areas requiring progression. No maps allowed.

Really looking forward to this one. Getting rid of the port to level and having an open world sounds great too.

First one was a great and very underrated game.

Demon's Souls was awesome.

i want this game.

another example of Sony stupidity was not locking this title down. they could have had it as an exclusive franchise and obviously blew it.

Probably a real smart move of them to get the hell out of holiday. Getting out in September (or even earlier) is going to get their game at least a week to itself... you put it in holiday and you're going to get absolutely crushed by MW3, BF3, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed and Gears.

Anybody picking this up on Tuesday? The reviewers are making this game out to be the hardest thing ever. They said that about Demon's Souls too, but I thought the difficulty was incredibly overrated. It was a tough game, but not nearly as bad as some made it out to be.

i found Demon's Souls relatively easy to be honest. at first it seemed kinda hard, but once i knew what was going on it all fell into place.

the monsters/enemies are always in the same spot, events always occur in the same way for the most part, so its easy to catch on when you know exactly what to expect.

Ninja Gaiden 2 was more difficult, imo.

but yeah, i do want Dark Souls. i'll most likely get it at some point in the next month or two.

I'm pretty excited for this. I heard good things about Demons Souls, but don't have a PS3 so I never got a chance to play it.

buy Dark Souls @ Futureshop and get a $10 Futureshop gift card and $10 towards The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

not a bad deal i guess.

Demon's Souls was very easy once you knew what you were doing. The hard and most rewarding part was figuring everything out. i hope for more of the same

It does sound harder than Demon's, just because you have a limited number of spells to get through an area with (you can only replenish your magic at bon fires, but using them makes everything respawn). There are also some ridiculous sounding debuffs, like stacking curses that steal half your health bar until you get it cured by some NPC, or a boss that melts armor and weapons, which destroys them forever.

So the strategy guide for the limited edition is actually digital this time. They said it'd be too big if they tried to package it.

Is this game that tough, or are most of the reviewers pansies raised on the decreasing difficulty found in videogames? I'll go with the latter.

The game is not necessarily any tougher than most games, it's just completely unforgiving and punishing. It's a game of patience, where you have to be ready to replay hours of content because you made a slight mistake.

It's gotten pretty big, in Japan it sold close to 10 times more than Demon's Souls on their first week. Some EBs are doing a midnight launch for it.

This game is getting 90+ everywhere, not surprising.

Right-like games USED to be. Shoot, I remember RPGs on the Genesis that fit that description (like the Phantasy Star series). Anyone who had to make the trek to get to (much less beat) Dark Force in PS 3 knows what I'm talking about. Anyway, I welcome a challenge.

For some reason, I pre-ordered the CE version for the PS3 on Amazon on Sept 5th and ordered it with release date shipping, and it says it hasn't shipped yet... what the hell?

I don't think the replaying hours of content part is accurate, at least not in Demon's Souls. Even if you're dieing every 10 minutes, you're always making progress, finding a key here, flipping a switch there.

How games USED to be is not necessarily better. Battletoads is basically impossible, doesn't make it better than God of War.

I played 3 hours of Demon's Souls, never beat the first boss, had no healing items, no souls, and no progress. I don't have time for that anymore. Maybe when I was 12.

There's a multitude of factors to consider, but for me challenge is key.
