Rangers Agree to terms with Jason Wilson

As per Cerny's Twitter...

Jason Wilson, the rugged 6-foot-3, 210 pound fifth round pick in 2010, has agreed to terms with the #NYR on his first pro contract

Good. If everything breaks right, he's Brandon Prust.

Interesting. I was upset with the pick but it appears he took a big step to becoming a guy like Prust or Chris Neil or something similar to the bottom 6 of a team.

Great for him, considering I didn't even think he'd be offered a contract.

LOVED the pick last year and love the fact that he has proven to be the player I thought he was becoming. The kid is tough as nails and has some offensive skills. Prototypical 4th liner on a Stanley Cup team. Can play a regular shift, drop the gloves and score some goals.

how many contracts have they signed? Can this dude be pushed back to Juniors next yr and not count on the total?

Good for him for developing further and getting a spot. I guess he gets Werek's contract?

Looks like a decent pick. I still like guys picked after him who have higher upside but that's just me

Good point. Could be a bit of impatience going on here by our management, thanks for pointing that out.

Wilson played as an overager in Niagara. His junior eligibility is over. Wilson will be in the AHL next season. Too old for contract slide. Wilson gives the Rangers 32 SPCs for 11-12.

Bruce Berlet spoke to Jim Schoenfeld a few weeks ago

Quote:
Other top prospects who could be signed by the Rangers and join the Whale include goalie Scott Stajcer and forwards Ethan Werek, Roman Horak and Jason Wilson. Like the Whale and Rangers, Stajcer and Werek battled injuries this season.

Horak and Wilson have been signed. Werek was traded. Owen Sound is still playing so any announcement regarding Stajcer could come after their season is over which could be tonight. Stajcer hasn't played well in the Mississigua series. The Rangers could trade Stajcer before June 1 if they don't want to sign him. Maybe they sign Viktor Fasth when the WC is over. Fasth can't sign a NHL contract until the WC is over.

My prediction is they sign another unknown keeper from somewhere (sleeper-keeper), they dump Stajcer and V Fasth signs in Tampa.... Time will tell.
I bet Parlett + somebody else we do not know of that is undrafted gets a contract too. J Fasth + the new guy Lindberg are dark horses too (both have potential!).

I'm a little surprised by this. I was under the impression he wasn't having that great of a season, did he step it up towards the end of the year?

What an original concept for a post! You should do this every time the Rangers sign/trade for someone who won't have a huge impact!

From what I understand Wilson is a very good skater--so just in that respect he's not likely to be the next Aaron Voros. He will fight but it doesn't seem like he's nearly the frequent fighter that Prust is--but he is bigger. If he makes it he'll be a hard nosed grinder type player--which is fine for a 5th rounder.

5th rounder Brendan Gallagher had 93 points in 70 games.

5th rounder Freddie Hamilton had 97 points in 82 games.

5th rounder Michael Ferland had 62 points in 62 games.

5th rounder Dman Troy Rutkowski had 60 points in 92 games.

Those are player who have good skills in juniors, but there skills may not translate very well to the pros

I could say the same about Wilson. Dane Byers was a lock to be at least a 3rd liner right?

With Wilson I don't think the Rangers were looking necessarily for a big scorer and junior numbers aside neither he nor the 4 others you mention are a lock to be NHL'ers. 5th round or whatever you're throwing some **** against the wall just to see if it will stick. He conforms to a type of unspectacular grinding player that most winning teams need a few of to wear other teams down and he seemed to make progress as a player this year.
