On the coaching front, Columbus has hired Ian Clark as their goalie coach and Nashville has re-signed former Sabres goalie coach Mitch Korn.

I wish Pegula had lured Korn away from the Preds....

Not too significant, but Jason LaBarbera re-signs with Phoenix for 2yrs/$2.5m/$1.25m cap hit.

Flyers acquire Bryzgalov's rights for Matt Clackson, 3rd in 2012, and future considerations.

Could it be that he is/was looking for $6m or similar money? If so, I can't imagine that the Flyers would be able to sign him without trading away 2 of their players.

Hilarious that he wants to be one of the top paid players, not just goaltenders. He ain't that good. And how would Philly pay him if his demands are that high? Carter departing?

Carter + one of Hartnell, Versteeg or Carle
or
atleast 2 of Hartnell, Versteeg, Carle and Coburn

Leino gone and rest of the spots filled with cheap players.

Basically, if he's really looking for $6m (and with his numbers and the fact that he was a Vezina finalist a year ago it could very well be), Philly would have to gut their team to fit him in.

Or they could trade the oft injured 6.5 million dollar center in Danny Briere, and be a better team for it. They have more than enough fire power, they need to solidify their goaltending. The question is whether or not there is a market for Briere at that price.

Briere's cap hit is only $6.5m. He's a proven playoffs performer, he might be their best playoff forward. Carter is not. He has NMC, Carter does not. I see no reason for them to trade him before Carter or their depth forwards or even Timonen.

I think a lot of teams might be turned off by Carter's 10 year deal. I know it only takes one team to say yes, but I could see the market being rather small for him.

Timonen has talked about retirement FYI and probably has one year left. I doubt he goes anywhere.

Lots of players have NMC's and still get moved.

I think Carter is a lot harder to move with an 11 year contract and a 5.25 million cap hit for a player who scored 61-66 points the past two seasons. Add to that his real salary is 6-7 million in per season for the next 7 years, I'd say he would be pretty hard to off-load.

Briere is on the tail end of a long deal making relatively little in terms of real money. Makes him very attractive to smaller markets that don't worry about cap hit, but dollars spent.

That said, you are probably right, they will probably move a highly paid defenseman without a NMC (Meszaros, Carle, Coburn).

Actually... even if they get rid of 3-4 million by trading a player without taking on ANY salary, they are in rough shape capwise. Unless Kimmo is about to retire.....

APGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Kris Versteeg ($3.083m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Ian Laperriere ($1.166m) / Jody Shelley ($1.100m)
Blair Betts ($0.700m)

DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / Chris Pronger ($4.921m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Oskars Bartulis ($0.600m)
Braydon Coburn ($3.200m)

GOALTENDERS
Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m) / Ilya Bryzgalov ($6.250m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $62,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,231,655; BONUSES: $1,700,000

Carter is only 26. He should be worth his contract until he's about 32-33, means realistically the other team would only have to cope with 3-4 "bad" years.

Briere has 4 years left on his contract. That's a lot for a guy who's already 33. Can't see Philly getting anywhere close to fair value for him and given how he huge he's been for them in the playoffs, doubt they'd be ready to trade him to weaken their team that much come playoffs time.

He could definitely get something close to Miller's contract. 5.75-6.

Timonen has a full NMC, for the record, as do a few other Flyers. The 2007/2008 spending spree is coming back to bite them.

They didn't sign Carter to an 11-year deal just to trade him. It makes financial sense but not rational hockey sense. For my money, they trade Carle OR Coburn + Versteeg. Hartnell has a limited NTC as well.

Losing Carle/Coburn + Versteeg + Leino to FA gives them enough room. It will be tight and they'll have to fill out the roster with scrubs and ELCs, and likely field a shorthanded team at some point, but they'll make it work.

The real question is: what do we give up for Carle or Coburn, and is it worth the trade? If Philly is desperate for space they might take something like McNabb + 2012 3rd for either guy.

This thread is getting too off topic.

So here is a thread to discuss Philly trading for Bryz' rights, its impact on Philly, who could we get and what would it take.

I would not be at all surprised if he came back here to replace Nieds. Seems like a very Pegulla thing to do.

I think he has a bit more gas left in the tank than that. We need center depth, he's a center. Him and Grier on a reunion tour?

I'm all for Drury coming back on a reasonable contract.

I really want that to happen, actually.

We're one of the worst faceoff teams in the league as it is. Why are we then moving our best faceoff man to wing?

Drury has lost two steps. If he's brought back, I'd prefer him on the wing at ES. But he could center a PK unit and give us another decent faceoff guy other than Goose on defensive zone draws.
