good call, forgot to mention this.
i'll be updating when we get the official number from the NHL.
this coming year will be somewhat interesting to see how management handles things, but for 2012-13, we're not even at half of the current cap, and only have 1 d-man signed (plus Smith at that point, i'd assume.) Homer & Bert will probably be done... this team could be vastly different.

Couple questions:
1. What do you think the chances of Lidstrom taking a somewhat significant pay cut? Like signing for less then $5,000,000.
2. What do you think Bertuzzi and Holmstrom's future with Detroit is? Basically will they stay or retire?

Without any huge changes being made and assuming that Lidstrom comes backk a year...
I would like the wings to target at least one of Shane O'Brien, Erskine or Montador (in that order) to replace one or 2 of Salei and Ericcson. None of those guys are old, they are all tougher than Salei or Ericcson and they can play the game well as stay at home guys.
I also wanna see a Dallas Drake type added and Hudler moved, Raffi Torres maybe?
Scott Nichol, Konopka, Ben Eager, Winchester, Tanner Glass and Matt Bradley could all be good additions as well. This team to me just needs to be able to dishh out more pain. Once Kronwall got hitting the team turned the series around.
Bradley and Konopka are the 2 I would want most out of those forwards

I think you need to get the most from what you already have before looking at UFA's. Abby has to step into one of those roles that you filled with a free agent. Where's Kindl? Where's Mursak?
I'm also not ready to give up on Ericcsson, I don't think he will leave his comfort zone in Detroit. (I could be wrong though)

Hudler can get traded, at worse you can get a draftpick for him or include him with a first round pick and kindl/smith for a solid top 3/4 defenseman guy under contract, how can you possibly want ericsson back after his abysmal playoffs? Mursak...he's not a special player.. just another abdelkader/helm/eaves etc.
Looking through the list of FA's in defense, we could build a solid D-corps with the cap space we have. White, Ehrhoff, Pitkanen, Wisniewski, Bieksa, Markov are all available at the right price.
If Holland has the guts to do it, go for Weber or even offer-sheet Doughty or try to acquire Bogosian.
I remember a rumor floating around that ATL offered bogosian for like Hudler + Ericcson/Kindl + something.
I would have jumped on that like a wild animal if I were holland. When I heard the rumor I thought it was too good to be true though. I knew Hudler would be garbage.
moves: (before i'm burned at the stake, i'm also fine if we keep Filppula, but signing b.rich would be an upgrade at 2nd center and make Flip expendable; i'd like to get Pav and/or Hank an elite scoring winger, and Stafford would be a stud here.)
*re-sign Lidstrom, Eaves, and Miller
*sign Richards, 6 years / $33 million-ish; less than market i'm sure, but maybe willing to take a discount?
*trade Hudler, Ericsson's rights, B-prospect (Ferraro?), 2011 1st round pick to ATL for Bogosian
*trade Filppula to BUF for Stafford (straight up gets it done i think, maybe add a late 2012 pick)

This please I love the first one! We'd have one sexy team lol.

Mursak...he's not a special player.. just another abdelkader/helm/eaves etc.
Well Helm has always been touted as a grinder but is looking like he has top 6 potential all of a sudden. Mursak has laways been touted as a Helm with better hands and offensive play. Mursak could very well be a scoring line player
Don't think a Norris Trophy candidate would be asked to take a pay cut if he comes back.
After next year the team may be very different with all of the contracts for older players up. Richards may be nice but commands too much $$ & probably too long a contract. Next year will be a re-tooling as the Wings will have the money to bring in good young players to go along with our seasoned vets.
This coming year, I would like to see the wings go after a big scoring (even older) forward through a trade of players and/or picks, even if it is for 1 year. Don't know who this could be, but as an example, someone like Doan.
We dont have the cap space for those and still try to fill our roster. Guys like helm, eaves, and mursak are perfect low cost guys that dont eat up a ton of minutes.

I think a guy like Zherdev would score 30 goals on datsyuks wing.

Yea but Zherdev has a higher ceiling than guys like abs/helm/eaves...that does not mean those 3 do not have a very important spot to fill in our bottom 6 roster, if mursak can come in and be as useful in the bottom 6 as them, then I think that is awesome. It just means we'll be a deep team for years to come and only need to worry about getting FA's to fill any top 6 holes.
On another note, Zherdev is a risky purchase on any team IMO. Not sure he'd do well on babcocks team.
What about Ed Jovanovski? Will he re-sign with Phoenix? How much would he cost?
The main question is whether Phoenix wants him, which is unclear. After adding Klesla and Rozy mid-season Phoenix has 7 dmen for next year [6 signed + Yandle RFA] not including Jovo. If Phoenix does want to keep Jovo and offers a reasonable deal I expect him to stay as he seems to genuinely enjoy living there. Someone would probably have to be traded.
If Jovo hits the open market I could see him getting a 2-3 year deal for $3.25m to $3.75m per year. While he missed 32 games this season, it was for a broken orbital bone from a slapshot--not the kind of injury that would worry a team that his body's breaking down.
