Lou Nanne, a former player, coach and general manager for the North Stars who is close friends with many inside the Wild organization, admired Boogaard.

"Derek had a real zest for life; he always seemed to have a smile on his face." Nanne said. "I am totally surprised by this tragic news, and my thoughts and prayers are certainly with the Minnesota Wild organization and his family."

"On the ice he was quite an imposing figure, but off the ice he really was a gentle giant,” Nanne said.

Nanne will remember Boogaard as a throwback player.
,
"Boogey knew what his role was, and he embraced being the enforcer, but he did it the right way,” Nanne said. “Derek was beloved by his teammates and respected by players throughout the NHL because of the way he played the game."

Geez. On way to golf course and I just heard. So sad.

Looks like the good lord needed a tough guy.

Too many young people lost too soon.

God bless.

Derek Boogaard, the friendly but at times troubled soul who spent this past season with the Rangers, has died at the age of 28.
Quote:
Boogaard, who completed the season with one goal, one assist, 45 penalty minutes and seven fights in 45 games, had begun to skate on his own toward the end of the season, but management sent him home with about a week remaining because of unspecified issues.

General manager Glen Sather nevertheless remained loyal to the 6-foot-7, 265-pound winger, suggesting that the signing would become a positive one for the franchise.
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/range...-rss&FEEDNAME=

Sather is good with guys who might have issues. Sather gave MacT a second chance after he killed a woman while driving drunk when MacT played in Boston.

John Kordic was another tough guy who died very young. He had substance abuse issues. Kordic was a monster. Go look at his youtube fights.

Ken Campbell has some more info

Quote:
Investigators into the death of New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard had not completely ruled out foul play or suicide Friday night, but neither cause of death is “on the radar,” according to a source with the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office in Minneapolis.

The source, who requested anonymity, confirmed that Boogaard had been found dead in his Minneapolis apartment by family members at 6:10 p.m. Friday night. An autopsy on Boogaard is schedule for Saturday morning.

The Minneapolis Police Department, meanwhile, would not say whether it is investigating Boogaard’s death.

“We don’t have any information,” said a spokesperson at the Minneapolis Police Department. “There will be a press release (Saturday).”

Boogaard's agent Ron Salcer spoke to Campbell. Salcer didn't provide any details. Salcer represents Marian Gaborik too.

I just woke up and heard the news.

Unbelievably tragic news. Way too young. And a good human being.

Thoughts are with Derek's family and friends.

RIP Boogy.
