Russian posters: How important is Gold for Russia?

For Russians, is hockey gold seen as the most important gold medal to win or there another sport where winning is more important?

If Russia wins hockey gold, they can not win another medal the entire olympics and it's still a success. If they lose to Canada 7-3 again and win twenty other gold medals, it will be an empty feeling.

Yes, Hockey is biggest winter sport. For some it's figure skating though.

Figure skating is actually more popular than ice hockey in Russia in terms of the potential TV audience during the Olympics.

Hockey overall isn't nowhere near being the most popular sport in Russia.

But despite all of that, it is pretty important and a matter of national pride. A game vs. USA or Canada in the play-offs would be a throwback to the Cold War days for a lot of people and a lot of them would consider it very important to win.

Why are you posting on a topic ypu have no idea about in Riga? None of your statements is even close to the truth.

I worked in a restaurant in Vancouver during the olympics and a bunch of russian athletes/diplomats came in and booked the place during the Canada Russia game. They were having fun until Russia started loosing then when the game got out of reach they left the restaurant without even finishing their meals or drinking they were so mad. So the hockey means a lot to them.

There is a big difference between hockey fans and all others. For hockey fans hockey medal are of course the most important ones, but for ppl will even only watch and cheer fo the NT during the games it's very different. Probably as for most bigger sports nations the overall success is important for Russians and they will follow the medal count as eagerly as the single contests. Also there are other winter sports outside hockey popular in Russia. In fact there is a poll on a russian site right now about following the olympics and biathlon is slightly ahead of hockey followed by cross-country skiing and speed skating. Quite accurate I think for all of Russia. There is also a popularity poll for single athelets there on the other hand and most regions of Russia voted hockey players most popular. Bt despite of what some posters are writing here the hockey gold or bust attitude is very very rare. Most ppl wopuld be dissappointed if Russia doesn't do well overall.

This is a hockey board. Of course most posters here tend to see hockey as the most importnat thing on Earth. Doesn't mean it works for all Russians.

Just like there are a lot of Mexican immigrants in Southern California or a lot of Central Asian immigrants in Moscow, there's a huge amount of Russian immigrants in Riga.

So I know what I'm talking about. I've spoken to plenty of people and actually read about the polls conducted in Russia.

Ice hockey isn't a dominant sport in Russia, both in the context of the Sochi Olympics and in general.

Often national pride is why people consider it important for Team Russia to win, it's got little to do with a love for hockey (like in Canada, Finland, Latvia).

Don't even try. You know it's very different. and btw "russian immigrants" in Riga are mostly as russian as Mexican. That also goes for their views vastly different from the views of Russians.

Soccer and hockey are the 2 dominant sports in Russia. Period.

Here a quote from Plyuschenko for you. Why would a figure skater say that if figure skating is soooo popular in Russia? Why would a journalist ask tis kind of a question too?

Yeah, I get it. You're trying subtly to go around the plain "we're better than you" and it is still the same russophobic sting. If it makes you feel better, yes, we hate hockey, we don't play it and we don't care about it. Whatever makes a Latvian sleep well.

I'm really not trying to be offensive, just speaking my mind. We definitely don't need your women. We could use a couple of good D-men of yours, but that's it.

Didn't they have a guy who lives in Russia and is a Russian economic, social, and "pop" expert on NBC that said the Russian Olympic federation wants gold in hockey above all else? He basically says winning gold in hockey but sucking in everything else would still be a success to Russia. That's just what he said, i didn't pretend to know how Russians feel.

Not sure why you are quoting my post and something about HFboard posters. I never brought them up.
