After the colossal failure that was Dragon Age 2, I'm very much looking forward to a proper RPG.
And even if Witcher 2 turns out to be a gigantic turd, but:
- you gotta respect that the game was done with a metric fu*kton of passion and love and attention to detail
- you gotta appreciate that the guys went out and said Free DLCs in a world when 99% of companies charge you 5$ for a DLC that consists of your companion wearing a dark brown instead of a brown armor
Props to CD Projekt as they're showing the right attitude when so many companies try to milk your money away with half-assed products and crappy DLCs these days (Bioware - well, EA-owned now, Valve, etc.).
Not really ac's combat was fun but poor bc the ai was horrible. The only cool things were the finishing moves
Yeah, maybe not litteraly like ac, but with a keyboard option or something. I kind of have to get used to the clicking thing.
A keyboard maybe makes for more of a feel to the fighting, like you're actually slashing away maybe.
When I have time/feel like it I may be playing the first of these, and maybe get this one when it's cheap.
Still feel like reading the books first though.
Spoil:
although the games are after when the book ends I think... I read a major spoiler on the internet, and the start of the first one is also a bit of a spoiler to the end of the book series I think... still feel like reading them though.
I'm technically "getting" it right now to try it out and if I really like it, I might "get" it for real . I kinda got burned by the ******** that is Brink (not bad, just meh) and I would like to see if this is really worth the price.
Supposedly is very free form, as in like most 3rd person action RPGs and now has a command wheel, which when used, slows down time and you can select a spell to cast or change some items that you would want to use.

I'll post my full impressions so far in a little bit, but the combat is quite different. I'm just not sure it's that much better.
For reference I played on hard.
Combat is more 'free' in a sense that you can combo mobs and keep them off of you. But fighting mobs is a lot harder than TW1. You need to keep track of who is going to hit you next and strike while each is about to hit you. And if you mess up or are overwhelmed a timed Parry (player controlled :thumbu) will save your life. I'm not that far yet but some of the enemies can kill you pretty quickly if you lose your timing. It's not the same type of timing as TW1 it's just more anticipating the enemy.
So far it has been a decent challenge so I'm content with the changes. I do not like the slow time thing, give me a damn pause button.
BTW, the visuals are AWESOME. I'm currently exploring newegg for a new card. My 9800gtx gets about 25-30 frames @ 1600x900 medium detail. That's not gonna cut it for me. Looking at the 2gb 6950 as it seems like a good bang for buck option.
There is one HUGE problem for me, but luckily and INI fix solved the issue, if anyone needs it ill post it. The problem is there is NO, invert Y mouse option in the menus. How ridiculous, even the most crappy console ports have that option. But like I said there is a fix and according to the CDProject people on GOG.com they WILL be releasing a patch to add invert mouse. A little annoying but at least they are addressing it.

I have a 5850 and I wonder how well that will run.
I am done with the Prelude and into the beginning of Chapter 1. Like SniperHF said it looks excellent. I am playing on medium settings with a couple items on high and am probably averaging around 35-40 FPS with 2X5770 X-fire. I tried the "ultra" setting and got less then 10 FPS . Hopefully the next AMD drivers improve the performance.
The combat is not the strongest point. I didnt mind the combat in W1 though. It is definitely harder fighting groups of enemies then W1, I find you cant let them get behind you or you go down quick.
The minigames are ok, arm wrestling, boxing and such but pretty easy so far. The story is great so far though. Really enjoying it.

World is some (not sure how many obviously) are having issues with the drivers(shocking) more than anything on the ATI side.
Best guess with a 5850 and decent system you'll get somewhere in the neighborhood of 40FPS in a big battle with the same settings I use. I question how well optimized it is and I think ATI/nVidia need to crank out some new drivers. I'm about to try some beta drivers for nVidia that supposedly help.
It all depends on if you want to keep your monitors native resolution and what not. The game looks impressive on low even; you won't be missing much with detail turned down.

Just tested with beta driver, no improvement. But I have an older card and it still might help newer nVidia cards.
EDIT: played with the settings a bit. If I disable SSAO I gain 5-7 FPS. That let me increase some settings from low to high and keep my 30FPS. SSAO = frame rate killer.
Absolutely gorgeous game on an aesthetic level. Sort of reminds me that games have just been fugly this gen, the majority have been bland or use that awful GeOW look that has become so popular in shooters.
I like it so far, I'm still not sure how I feel about the combat, anyone else finding it surprisingly tough? I didn't expect the ramp up in difficulty.

Combat is hard for me, as I'm more of an RPG/MMO stats/numbers guy.
I suck at shooters and I'm barely adequate in Uncharted/AC.
But, I find it good... If hard.
Everything else, so far... Has been awesome.
I love how much passion was put into the game, it's oozing out of its every pore.
I love the language, the nudity and the violence, it feels real and not over-the-top or shoved down your throat.
What a bunch of ****ing tools BioWare has become. I love ME2, but holy **** this is just stupid and uncalled for. CD Projekt RED made a better game than yours. ****ing deal with it, you *******.
Nah, it's apparently not a BW employee, but a fanboy.
BW's Chris Priestly on the Official Forums:
Quote:
Ok. Couple of things.
1 - This is not a BioWare employee, no matter what the person who wrote the article claims.
2 - Yes, last time it was a well meaning BioWare employee who reviewed our own game. It is not this same person.
3 - This is not Dragon Age II related, so this gets closed.
4 - Personally, I loved The Witcher and will be getting to Witcher 2 once I whittle down this stack of games on my desk. I hope it is even better than the first game.
Seems like it's not the same guy, thought the guy rating DA2 ridiculously high WAS a BW employee.
Which is sad. Sad. Sad. Sad.
Either way, CD Projekt is a breath of fresh air in the industry that's grown stale and cinical on milking your money away for half-products.
And I hope it serves as a wake-up call to Bioware as TW2 definitely pounds their latest product into a bloody pulp.

I have NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT, 512 MB. Do you think it'll run well?
Also how much memory space do you need for installing?
It's definitely a great looking game. I haven't actually checked my FPS, but I haven't noticed any slow downs or chugging or anything. Only thing is that I get quite a bit of texture pop-in.
I'm finding the combat frustrating. Not in a "it's too hard" way, but "it doesn't do what I expect it to do" way. Targetting is wonky, it sometimes targets the enemy in the middle of the screen, sometimes the enemy behind him, sometimes the one to either side, sometimes it kind of sticks to a target, and sometimes Geralt goes leaping off at some enemy I can't even see on the screen. Using the parry button doesn't even seem to register about half the time, Geralt just stands there. Sometimes everything will flow together nicely and then other times it seems like there's a delay between some actions. I can't really find an effective way to deal with a group, because I just can't seem to get it to act the same way each fight. Aard and Igni (push and fire) signs being single target instead of a cone is annoying and much less effective.
I'm not sure I like the way potions work. The main problem being that they only last like 10 minutes. Making you use them only out of combat is OK, but since they are so short they're only there for a single encounter instead of lasting a long time, lettting you take them and do a bunch of quests in the an area. You can't use for them every encounter though, because you'd use so many, so I find myself trying to take an encounter I think I can win without them and then if I die (a lot so far...) I then take the potions. Sometimes you have no idea what's up ahead either, so you can't even plan it. I went into a cave near Flotsam thinking that I'd take a quick look at the front to see what's in there and then decide wether or not to take some and it turned out there was like 20 nekkers there. Not spread around the cave in groups, just all right at the front and the rest of the cave was empty. So, I died and then took some potions after loading and got through it.
Still having fun despite all that. I guess I just need to get used to it more.
Also wanted to know if anyone could help me on this quest. Just a minor side quest early on in Flotsam you get from a guy on the docks regarding a formula, but spoilering in case someone doesn't want to see it.
Spoil:
I got a quest to get a formula from a dealer from some guy on the docks. Got a fake formula from him and then the guy on the docks said he wanted to test it in his lab and to meet him at the gate. At the gate he said he wanted to blind fold me to take me to his lab and I told him to screw off, so I now have a point on my map for the location, but can't seem to find a way to it. It's on the top of some hill, but I've got all the way around the hill as much as I can and can't find a way up there. I haven't see any cave enterances or anything either. How do I get up there?
You can only block/parry when you have something left on your vigor bar, the one that is used for signs. Personally, I found the axii sign really useful in bigger fights. It's the one that makes one of the enemies fight on your side.
The more I mess with the combat, the more I like it. I think the steep curve will lessen as the game goes on, I keep getting a ton of vitality mutagens so I know that at the very least I'll be able to take a ton of hits, and can already take much more than when I started the game. Still, the targeting is a little wonky, I'd imagine they'll be patching this game up a bunch, but it's not as disastrous as I remember the first Witcher game being when that first came out.

Unfortunately that card falls below the minimum specs. Even though the minimum is an nVidia 8800 512mb, and you have a 9xxx series; the 9500 is pretty weak compared to an 8800.
If the rest of your system is strong(Older Intel quad @2.8ghz or higher) I bet it will run, at the absolute lowest settings at +/- 15 FPS at 1024x768 with significant and perhaps unplayable slow downs during action or demanding areas (prologue).
Post the rest of your system, and if it's decent a +/- $100 card could solve your problems with TW2 anyway.
