Vladimir Zharkov

Does he crack the opening night roster and if so what is his role in the future for the Devils ?

No doubt in my mind.

He has already found his role as a third/fourth line winger. He lacks a true scoring touch, but will get a good amount of time on the penalty kill. He is Jay Pandolfo.

If you are playing on Jacques Lemaire's PK, he must like your defensive ability, and you are also going to learn a thing or two.

He had no problem cracking the lineup for Lemaire, so it just depends on how the next coach likes him. But I can't imagine him not dressing.

1st line goal scorer.

Way to early to tell if he'll crack the lineup as we don't even know what the roster will be.

he is the perfect checking winger IMO. hes miles ahead of most guys defensively for his age. reminds me of Brylin-lite sometimes

he just doesnt have the scoring touch to be a top six player.

he also draws a good amount of penalties

His speed, agility, and acceleration make him a great forechecker. He doesn't have much of a scoring touch, but he creates turnovers. He's also great on the PK.

I'd say he definitely has a spot on at least the fourth line this season.

You all are being kind. So far in his NHL career, Zharkov has shown that he cannot score. His breakaway goal against the Bruins in the last game of the season was something, but it was in a game that meant nothing to either side. If he can't score, can the Devils really afford to put him out there for meaningful minutes?

No kidding, he`s one of the best def. wingers in the game. Such a shame his scoring touch is close to the freezing-point. If his last performance as a Devil means sth (I hope so), he`ll score more. He`s a perfect bottom6 guy ATM, so he has to have a spot. At least on the 4th line. (with some PK time)

depends on who the coach is. idk if it was a bit of a "sophomore slump" kinda thing but i didnt see the hounding puck pursuit his first year as frequently and creation of turnovers. hes gotta train hard this summer to be at the top of his game for camp and the new coach.

I doubt he's ever going to be even a mediocre scorer at the NHL level, but if he carves out a niche on the 4th line and PK, that works for me.

On the other hand, he has a career shooting percentage of 2.1%, which is unsustainably low. Even if he's a really poor scorer, he should have 3 times as many career NHL goals as he does right now.

That's how I look at it. He's only played 1 season worth of NHL games, he's scored at the AHL level. I doubt he's the worst goal scorer, measured by shooting, by a huge margin in NHL history.

Zharkov generates good scoring chances for himself and for others while playing really strong defense and winning puck battles. He's also only 22/23 years old. He should be on the team next year.

Two goals in 38 games this year = 5 goals over the course of an 82 game season. As a 23 year old forward who's primary role is to play great defense, that's not too shabby. Nevermind his age, behind Zajac and Parise, he's our 3rd best defensive forward.

Hockey is a game of roles, ask Herb Brooks. If Zharkov is making the team to play great defense, forecheck, and PK, then he'll be a great role player. Besides, in an 82 game season, I think he can hit 10 goals or so once he's fully developed. Jay Pandolfo had a 13 year career doing exactly what Zharkov is projected to be.

Not to mention, Zharkov has a much, much higher ceiling than people give him credit for. We've all seen his puck possession. He plays incredible defense. He just chokes when he gets a prime opportunity. If he can ever get over that pressure, I honestly believe he can be a top 6 player, I mean, how could he not be? Will he ever find that goal scoring touch? That, I'm not sure.

Nogoalov eh? We'll see because his supposed low shooting percentage should rebound but I'm not as sold for that to be a reason to play him.

If the Hoeffels and whoevers start to pan out, nogoalov will be in trouble. They will be able to play on the bottom lines and hopefully will know how to score.

he has been snakebitten like no other in his scoring chances when they come along - posts, shinpads and ripping it wide of net. Aside from that he is an incredible passer, fast as lightning and backchecks like it's his personal mission.

It's too bad he doesn't take faceoffs because he'd be the perfect 3rd line center if he did.

He has a role on this team and it will expand when he finally gains confidence in his scoring.

I hope Zharkov stays with the big club, as he's an absolute forechecking nightmare.

There's no reason he cant be groomed into Pando2.0, as a forechecking and PK specialist, which every successful team benefits from.

He's never scored at any level. But he can pass well, and skates extremely well, and is a top notch defensive player who plays well in <10 minutes a game situations. Perfect compliment to a high caliber team, especially in a salary cap era - definite role player.

Horrible for any fantasy sports what so ever.

Yeah, unless the NHL creates the AOF stat (annoying opposing forwards) , he's going to be pretty useless in fantasy.

The kind of guy you need on a team like a Ranheim, Chorske or a Marchant. Speed and PK specialist. People love to knock is lack of scoring but he brings other things that a team needs to the ice. I'm pretty sure he is the player other GMs when dealing with Lou say,"would you mind throwing him in the deal?"

I assumed that's why this question was even posed in the first place. Realistically, he's going to be lucky to ever hit 10 goals a season.

Every championship team needs a guy like Zharkov. I only wish he had more timely scoring in him.

This is the most important part to take away about Zharkov. He will get better as time goes along. He will be a 5-10 goal guy with outstanding defensive ability. Unless he comes into camp out of shape or some prospects play out of their minds he will be in the starting 20 come next season.

Kovalchuk can score. Is he going to play on an important penalty kill?
