I really hope Petrov comes over to N.A. next year. Send him to Bridgeport to start and we can finally see what we've really got in him. The fact that Kabanov will probably be at the Bridge with him, it's a perfect situation.
Hey guys, just wondering what you guys think of Tomas Marcinko? Is there a chance he'll see time in the NHL? What style does he play and where does he project in the lineup? I was surprised that he's stuck in NA for so long even with poor stats, so I've assumed he's a defensive specialist, but I really have no idea.
I'm quite excited about Petrov's potential, but if he tries that same move in the NHL within 5 feet of the net, he'll get clobbered by a freight train of an NHL defenceman.
Corey Trivino with another 2 goals last game, now has 13 goals, one behind Brock Nelson, one ahead of Anders Lee.
Thirteen goals for Trivino, in 15 games, is more than he's scored over the prior TWO years at BU (12 goals in 65 total games in his sophomore and junior years).
He was barely 165lbs when drafted (if that), listed at 185lbs in the NCAA now, he'll be 22 years old in January (six months older than Anders Lee) and starting to show the promise he showed in his rookie year at BU. Smart, speedy center in the mold of Frans Nielsen, hopefully the NYI will sign him and he can become a player in Bridgeport.

actually caught that game the other night against maine. to be honest, although he did pot 2 goals, he really didn't stand out to me. i thought he was the beneficiary of hard work by his teammates on the ice...kinda like moulson, but not in a good way. he does seem stronger on his skates though. then again, he is one of the older guys out there.

Point well taken. His first goal on Saturday was the result of linemate's gritty work, but Trivino now takes his good stick to crease. And he's scored plenty of skill goals this season, too. He's scored in 12 of 15 games.
As for the added muscle, he's benefitted from 3+ years with Mike Boyle, the best strength and conditioning coach out there. Same guy who took a soft Mike Grier and turned him into a monster.

My only reserve about that is will Petrov actually come to NA to play in our minor league system? Russia will be able to pay KP good money to stay in their MAJOR league. Kabanov or not I do not think Petrov is going to be lured here to go to Bridgeport. I believe there was an interview once upon a time with Petrov saying he would do whatever it took to play in the NHl, even if that means playing in the minors. However, like I said money speaks and so does the ability to play in a more promenent league at the time.
All-in-all I have to believe Petrov would have to be on the Islanders opening night roster in 2012-2013 for there to even be a remote possibility of Petrov coming over.

In the new NHL I don't think so. The days of being able to full on clear the crease have been long gone if you ask me. Furthermore, Petrov is a big boy at 21 years old, standing 6'3 218.

No disagreement here. I'd say the same thing about the AHL.
And that's why it's a shame he never came over sooner- the KHL isn't the best place to be developing our prospects.
That said, he's still going to jump onto everyone's prospect radar in 2012...

Thanks in advance.
I think he has been a bottom sixer in the AHL and has little upside to make it to the NHL unless there was a ton of injuries.

"Clearing the crease" happens when a forward sets up shop right in front of the goalie, usually on a power play. I agree that the days of a defenceman being able to "clear" a guy out in that case without a penalty are mostly gone.
What I'm talking about is allowing a puckhandler to skate, untouched, within 5 feet of the opposing net and be allowed to make moves like he was on a breakaway. When in possession of the puck you're allowed to be hit, and despite is large size, Petrov ain't getting within 5-10 feet of the net in the NHL without an opposing player taking the body on him.

Petrov's hands are not to be discounted here, though he is better along the wall and in the corners as far as puck protection goes.
His bread and butter would seem to be on the PP anyway...but man would he look good alongside JT...
And at least we are closer to seeing Filatov was the right Russian to pass on in 08, as he's off to Russia for good now haha

And than that freight train d-man will get suspended.
Players pull of moves in tight all the time. This image is cartoonish. There aren't d-man lunging around rocking dudes who are by the net.

Not if his rights are dealt and he tried it against the Isles...

yeah, but there are d-men who actually play the body in front of their own net, unlike this video where they sit around and provide a lane to the net to score at will.

I agree with you to an extent. Yes, the windows are going to be smaller but by how much? Petrov is not playing in the juniors or in a league that is that much further below the NHL. The KHL does have talent and what makes Petrov so interesting as a prospect are his hands in a phone booth...
When you combine the hands and the confidence it can make those moves look so easy but it takes a good deal of talent to make that happen. Petrov is obviously not Tavares but again Petrov is bigger and would have been a very high pick as well had he not had the commitment to Russia for at least three more years in his draft year,.
Matt Dumba was cut by Team Canada today, along with Isles' prospect Brendan Kichton and five others, in the first round of cuts.
There's one more exhibition game tonight, then the final cuts are tomorrow. 4 goalies, 11 defensemen, and 20 forwards still remain at camp.
ray ferraro singled out kichton as looking really good. he displayed quite the vision on dsp's goal the other night (one of two goals scored during regular play). the result? he is cut. too bad. even without making this team, the kid seems to be a player.
StapeNewsday Arthur Staple
Just confirmed from #Isles: Nino Niederreiter will not be released to play for Swiss team at World Jr. tournament.
...damn
