Pitkanen to Detroit?

When a potential replacement for Lidstrom comes up I never hear this guy's name. He's really the only legitimate top-pairing guy available under-30, other than Erhoff, who seems more likely to be extended. He's left-handed, and can play effectively in any situation, so would you want him in Detroit, and why or why not, and for how much? He never even hit 40 points this season, but as a UFA and going to Detroit I could see him being around a 6 million dollar man. This could be Detroit's guy for the next 10 years. What do you think?

He is good for putting up points but his Defensive game is a little suspect.

No such thing

They certainly have the cap space for him next year though since Ericsson snubbed them

Couldn't have said it better.. Although I'm sure signing Lidstrom would never have boiled down to cap spent of Ericsson anyways..

10 years of Pitkanen? Good luck. His teammates and coaches usually get tired of him after a season or two. I'm amazed he's lasted so long in Carolina.

Media attention for Joni = disaster.

Especially if they want him to replace Lidstrom, the pressure would just kill him.

6 Million dollar man? Are you serious? Per YEAR?

Maybe Detroit gives him that. I would think 4.5 would be more in the range

He makes 4 million now. 6 million a year for Joni is absolutely not out of the question, unlikely, but not impossible.

Paul Martin got 5 M. That is the absolute minimum that he'll sign for IMO and he'll definitely get high offers of at least 5.5 M. Ya he is a pretty risky signing, as he's got some issues with performing under pressure so far in his career, but maybe Red Wing team culture could redeem him.

$6 million per?? no way

Rumor has it that GM's weren't exactly blowing up the phone lines to make offers for Joni. I think a 3rd rd. pick was offered. (granted it was for a pending UFA dman, but come on...)

a team can do much more with $6 million a year than give it to a talented, yet troubled and sometimes shaky Joni Pitkanen.

The perfect scenario for Joni would be to stay in Carolina, where's he accepted and comfortable, at a hometown discount. Maybe then through trade or free agency, the canes can add to the D corp. It's not that Joni sucks, it's just that he plays too big a role on Carolina.

Signing long term at a high price could be disastrous

Yup he's a guy with all the tools but he'll just never be the man. Sort of like Bouwmeester. Anybody that gives him 6 million will be trying to get rid of him as soon as the season starts.

Same goes for Ehrhoff.

Joni could excel in a different system where he's not expected to be this 2-way #1 stud.

Hmm ya seems best case he stays in Carolina. I could see him going to Phoenix though. He's young and they take everybody nobody else wants.

$6m for Pitkanen would be a disaster. Carolina wouldn't even think about matching that.

Pitkanen is barely an upgrade over Eriksson and at 6mil a year.....This would be the dumbest signing in a long time for Detroit.

Pitkanen was much heralded when he first came into the league. His skillset suggests he could be a franchise player but given how often he's been moved you know there's a problem somewhere. I'm a Wings fan and yes Lidstrom is irreplaceable but there risk when it comes to Pitkanen so I'd pass in favor of adding Erhoff or Bieksa.

I'll say this, if he signed with Detroit and he started excel there and finally hit his potential, or at least found a successful role, I wouldn't be shocked.

They just have a way of getting more out of players than other teams have.
