They just have a way of getting more out of players than other teams have.
Carolina has that same tendency. Plenty of players have raised their game when they played here... Jokinen, Corvo, Cole. We even have a ton of Finns in the organization and the most accomodating media you could imagine, things which are important to getting the most out of Pitkanen.
He's very shy, almost asocial. And I believe that's the main reason he's gotten into problems in Philly for example... It's easy to misjudge one as arrogant when he's quiet if you're used to American small talk-culture. Finns are usually quiet (we certainly don't have small talk in us, it's straight business ) and Pitkänen is quiet and shy even with our standards.
Detroit could be an ideal place for his personality, really. They have had many Euros, talented quiet men (Datsyuk) too. I don't think he's so fragile with the media, it's his surroundings that start to think him as a weirdo - which he is, in some ways. If he was accepted the way he is - by fans, media, other players, he'd play close to his potential. Mental coaching could do wonders. That's what I think, however.

It's very possible since he's one of the few really good PMD's in the UFA-market. What I agree is that it could be very stupid to offer him long term deal with that kind of money. High risk - high reward taken to extremes.
