Yeah, QC is a ways away from a team. They haven't even broken ground on their new arena yet.

I like the NW GTA concept, honestly. Privately funded arena... short term play out of Copps while the new arena is being built... wave a magic scheduling wand to never have the temporarily in Copps team never conflict with Buffalo or the Leafs...

Makes a ton of sense... The TV deal that the Leafs have could also be flexed to cover a NW GTA team on nights that the Leafs don't play...

I like the concept, in concept.

Seattle is even further from NHL ready than QC... Key Arena can only hold 11k for hockey.

Edit: While there were talks about a new arena during the summer, that was all it was... QC has the government referendum for a new facility, so at least they have that stepped up...

Well after last night's game attendance maybe Anaheim should move there

The Tacoma dome is currently being renovated to support...17k I think? The idea is that the Tacoma dome would be used as a temporary location while a new arena is built in Seattle.

As for Hamilton. It violates Toronto's 50 mile exclusivity radius. Unless you can get MLS&E to grant its blessing (good luck) it's a non-starter.

Not Hamilton... Too close.

McKenzie had a tsn.ca article last week about the quiet plan to put a new, privately funded arena in (if i remember correctly) the NW GTA area, not Hamilton.

tsn.ca is blocked by the effin proxy-nazis...

Bah...

I'm also getting my east and west confused. Article mentioned Markham as the possible landing spot for this privately funded arena.

I'd love to have actual brackets, but since the new format doesn't actually distinguish between East and West, there's no good way to decide which conference's winner plays which other conference's winner.

Also, to whomever mentioned STL-MIN as a Cup Final––that might not be the best option for ratings (although I think NBC would still take it in a heartbeat over the ratings trainwreck that was OTT-ANA), but the new format also opens up things like PIT-BOS, which would just be Bettman's wet dream.

I hadn't thought of that, but it's pretty brilliant politicking. Sweeten the deal for the Eastern teams, and avoid any *****ing from the teams in the 8-team conferences, because they're the ones who have been asking for this format all along.

SeaTac has no arena and a base of taxpayers not likely to pour more money into a new one after the Sonics debacle.

Portland has an arena but not even the rumblings of an ownership group.

KC's nice new arena is owned by the Kings ownership group––no way in hell the Kings move, and I don't think the NHL allows one owner to have multiple teams. More importantly, a KC team has already failed once (though admittedly, the product on the ice was abysmal) and there's nothing to really indicate that KC has a lot of hockey fans clamoring for a team. It very possibly could be successful, but after everything that's gone down in Phoenix, I think the other owners will be looking to relocate to a slam-dunk market, rather than take a (calculated) risk on another Southern market.

Houston? Relocating to another city in Texas isn't going to be popular amongst the BoG considering what's going in Dallas right now. Dallas probably wouldn't like another team on the fringes of their turf, either. And then there's the ownership question, as you pointed out.

QC has its flaws, don't get me wrong. It's a tiny media market and has the added media and marketing challenges of being a monolingual French city. But it's getting a new arena (and has the Colisée Pepsi in the meantime). It's got the fans to sell out (the Nordiques didn't have attendance problems; they just couldn't keep up because of rising salaries and the weak Canadian dollar––neither of which are a concern anymore). And it's got an ownership group that's already pouring money into the arena plan. There's also the fact that, at least openly, Bettman has expressed his desire to reverse past mistakes if relocation has to happen––he's said as much in his dealings with Winnipeg and, yes, the Wild.

The Wild will be on the short end of the stick. Just know it. The fact that it passed 26-4 doesn't sound too comforting to think it's a change in their favor...

4 divisions, Wild in Middle, home-home vs every team every year. Let it be.

It sounded like they had the votes to cram the 4 division plan down the northeasts throat, so I am really hoping here.

So four conferences confirmed.

We're gonna be in the same conference as Chi, Detty, et al?

Believe us, we're thrilled to be in a place we feel is more home. Thank gawd we're out of the NW. Couldn't have been worse for this franchise outside of not having a team to begin with. Watching more games against Louie/Winny/Hawky and the like? Can't wait!
