The toughness question...

With the departure of Quintal AND Langdon, from an already pretty soft Habs team, what do you see as a solution? I mean, at this stage of the game, whom do you see the Habs adding to bring some size and who can get theirs hands a bit dirty? It's not like we can have Komisarek and Souray scrapping all the time, Begin is too small, Bonneau too young, and nothing in the farm team system. Free agent market for this type of player is weak too at this point. I'm worried.

Any suggestions?

I don't think it's very importent right now...If we have many players who play with passion and grit, it will be O.K. Souray, Komi, Koivu, Zednik, Begin and the others play that kind of game so it's not really important. We can make the playoff even if we are small!!!

BG will address this situation, as he did last year, waivers,UFA, or a trade.

Jason Wiemer? Is he a good fighter?

He can fight, but, he's not a true enforcer. We will probably end up with someone from the waiver wire as has been suggested. Perhaps BG can pry Aaron Downey away from his old team.

I was wondering too the other day... a good scrapper, but one who is still young. The team was playing way more aggressive when Langdon was in the lineup, so I think we still need one. We can of course wait for the waiver draft, but they're usually not very reliable... why not try to land one of those :

Todd Fedoruk, 25, Philadelphia; my favorite as he can play a bit
Darcy Hordichuk, 23, Florida; can play too
Matt Johnson, 28, Minnesota; absolutely huge, mean and sometimes dirty
Stephen Peat, 24, Washington; one of the best fighters
Andrew Peters, 24, Buffalo; good friend of Langdon
Jody Shelley, 28, Columbus; one of the best fighters and is also somewhat dirty

I don't know what kind of players or picks we'd have to send the other way, just throwing names...

I've been wanting the Habs to look at Fedoruk for a while, wonder if he's available? Stephen Peat is also an excellent choice, as mentionned, he's a great fighter and if i'm not mistaken, he can play some hockey as well...

Replacing the toughness isn't a concern of mine. With the increasing role and ice time of Komisarek, I think blueline toughness is as good as it was at the beggining of last year, if not better, and replacing Langdon's 5 minutes a game doesn't seem impossible.

I just hope it's not Andre Roy. A little too nuts on the ice, and really not that great of a fighter from what I can see. Now Fedoruk would be SWEET.

I would like to get an enforcer in the mold of Langdon e.g. marginal player who will play 40-45 games per year. We have too much talent to squander. At least I'd like to think so.

I second

We got bigger with Bonk, meaner with Komisarek and less soft with the departure of Juneau and Dackell. And guys like Bégin and Ward will keep providing grit and energy. Besides our top offensive guys Koivu, Zednik and Ryder aren't easily discouraged by physical play.

My only concern with this team as it stands is Souray's health.

I was under the impression that Bonneau was an up and coming enforcer? Why not let him have a shot during the camp/preseason and see how it works?

Savard said he needed to prove he can play on the top 3 lines in the Q with PEI so I doubt he's ready.

Yeah, I guess that would make sense. No need taking a roster spot if you can't do anything but fight. Todays enforcers have to do more than just fight for the most part.

They have to be able to score important goals in the playoffs too (see:Langdon)

I'm pretty sure BG will pick up someone off Waivers or a cheap FA(as other people have said). Maybe he'll get us a Quintal type player. Someone who can play pretty solid but can fight too. It'll probably be someone we don't know anything about and after a month into the season we'll be praising Gainey for another great pick up.
